None of those situations are comparable Captain Bob, not sure why you felt they were relevant :shakehead

Uh, what? I've had the same username for 10 years on this site.

And yes, they are relevant, because you could make the argument that Filppula could've skipped the AHL and that the other guys shouldn't have spent as much time there. Hence, they had elongated careers in the AHL and it shouldn't be a surprise to expect the same to happen to Mantha, relative to his talent. In other words, him even going to the AHL could arguably be an elongated AHL career, but that is the Red Wings way.

Again, this is the Wings we're talking about. I'm truly sorry to rain on the Mantha for Art Ross parade, but the special formula for the Wings for the last decade has been: 1) a commitment to two-way play, 2) maturity, 3) experience against grown men, and 4) success against grown men. With respect to those standards, like I said, the only thing Mantha has going for him is size. That won't ever be a factor like it has been for Hudler, Nyquist, Tatar, et al. And he could be the next Corey Perry, but Wings management isn't going to give him a free pass because of what he's done in the Q. He'll have to prove he can handle the AHL before he gets his NHL pass.

yeah Jurco is a much better comparison really, except Mantha's bigger and better

Jurco struggled for a while earlier in the year last year so he didn't see any time with the Wings but this year he was having a great year and he's seen a lot of time with the Wings

it all depends how long it takes Mantha to do well in the AHL really,he's not gonna make the Wings out of camp no matter what but if he hits the ground running on the Griffins I wouldn't be surprised if he spent half the year in the NHL

Mantha has been a tonne more dominant than Jurco was in junior as well and was a higher pick in a deeper draft class. I love Jurco but I agree with you Mantha is bigger and better. Jurco played one year pro and then got significant time in the NHL. No reason to think Mantha cant at least do that, which would be breaking the wings overripe method.

I still think he gets maybe 10-15 games as a call up in his first year but wont be full time.

A big thing hanging on this is Franzen getting traded which has been rumoured or Alfie not coming back. Then it will be a young kid battle for top 6 wing spots between Nyquist (lock), Tatar (close to a lock), Jurco, Mantha and maybe Pulkkinen. Theres no reason to think Mantha couldnt at least get a look for a bit of the start of the season if he has a good training camp and always get sent down later on. WHo was the last guy that lit junior up this much their post draft year, lit up the world juniors and didnt at least get a shot to make the big club? Especially at 6'5 it seems unlikely he doesnt get a shot on the team. Especially now that the wings have realized the young guys give you the best shot at winning

Meh, another typical overrated Wings prospect who will never amount to anything.

Literally the only thing Mantha has going for him presently is his size. While his Q numbers are incredibly encouraging in a general sense, they will quickly mean zilch to the Red Wings organization if his transition to the AHL is subpar.

Haha. Sure, except for his speed, his shot, his offense instincts, and so on.

what happened to that guy?

Inactive for some time, thank goodness. He is crazy.

Maybe maybe not. We shall see. What prospect on this boards is not somewhat overrated? Mantha could turn into something the Wings need and have not had in a long long time. A BIG time scorer who can skate and score if he reaches his potential.

I'm pretty sure he was being facetious.

Oh, I was just being sarcastic. I figured I would chime in with the obligatory Wings prospects are all overrated post.

Im a wings fan but im starting to find these posts pretty over done and are a part of the reason wing prospects get hated on.

As for Mantha himself I'm interested to see if he hits 60 goals or not. I wouldnt mind his team getting out early and maybe get some AHL or NHL time this year

I've seen Mantha live only once, that was 2 weeks ago. My friend who fellows the Q closely told me that he's very inconsistent. Well, he looked like total crap in the ONLY game I've seen him. I wouldn't put too much emphasis on this viewing, it was only one time. It's a shame since I was really looking forward to see him showcase his talent against Shawinigan. I know it doesn't add much to the discussion, but I thought I could share. BTW, I still think he's a very good prospect and his consistency problems are very common in juniors, so I do not worry about it.

He's only had a few games all year where he's been held pointless and was on a crazy streak before the WJC if I remember correctly. He may be inconsistent physically but he's as consistent as it gets when it comes to scoring in juniors.

Well, he did actually score a goal in that particular game. He didn't create much offensively but he buried in a rebound from a weak play from the goalie. He almost didn't score as he partially missed his shot too.

He's not really someone who's going to really stand out. Sneaks into a quiet area and buries it. Powerplay machine.

He's very subtle in the offensive zone. It's a trait not many have (especially at 6'5" 210 lbs). It actually is a big asset of his game. Some people see it as inconsistency though, it's definitely not. He gives full effort every night

Jesus H. Christ, people. You sure get butthurt when you perceive someone to be taking a shot at the beloved Mantha.

Saying that the only thing he has going for him is his size was a comment made with respect to him skipping the AHL. He doesn't have an average or better two-way by NHL standards, he has no experience playing against grown man and (ergo) has no success against grown men. The fact that he's putting up big numbers in the Q will not get him an all-access pass to the NHL. Hence, the only thing he has going for him is his size - he is sure as hell physically ready for the NHL.
