Jesus H. Christ, people. You sure get butthurt when you perceive someone to be taking a shot at the beloved Mantha.

Saying that the only thing he has going for him is his size was a comment made with respect to him skipping the AHL. He doesn't have an average or better two-way by NHL standards, he has no experience playing against grown man and (ergo) has no success against grown men. The fact that he's putting up big numbers in the Q will not get him an all-access pass to the NHL. Hence, the only thing he has going for him is his size - he is sure as hell physically ready for the NHL.

This doesn't make sense.

I would still say his speed would be above average in the NHL and that goes with his size in a package which is rare. I also dont know how you can just not mention his shot and not say he has that going for him. Great release and can snipe

I've seen Mantha live only once, that was 2 weeks ago. My friend who fellows the Q closely told me that he's very inconsistent. Well, he looked like total crap in the ONLY game I've seen him. I wouldn't put too much emphasis on this viewing, it was only one time. It's a shame since I was really looking forward to see him showcase his talent against Shawinigan. I know it doesn't add much to the discussion, but I thought I could share. BTW, I still think he's a very good prospect and his consistency problems are very common in juniors, so I do not worry about it.

yeah I saw him in a game earlier in the season against Shawinigan and it was one of the worst viewings I had from him this year. The night before he was lights out against Sherbrooke. That said, I don't put too much stock in those games. Kind of a damn if you do damn if you don't scenario. If he scores 10 points people will call him out for getting numbers against weak teams, if he doesn't play too well then it shows he doesn't have heart and whatnot.

Btw, I still can't understand why people call him inconsistent this year. All he's done is dominate. Even on nights when he doesn't score, his line still gets a ton of chances.

Well(and no offense to the above poster) people watch him play and if he doesn't light the world on fire, they label him different.

That's why most scouts(as you know) watch a player several times(usually) before making a choice on his ability.

People say Mantha is lazy and inconsistent yet he still puts up points at an insane rate. Until his playing style stops working for him, I'm not worried. His size and shot alone will make him an effective NHLer no matter what. How many people have put up numbers like this in juniors and not been effective NHLers?

A lot.

Just go to HockeyDB and check it out !

As for Mantha, he will become a good NHL player because he will spend some time at AHL level in the Detroit organisation.

true, but few with his size have put up his type of numbers. I am actually having a tough time recalling a winger of his size who dominated like this in a post draft year.

Perry is the closest comparison i could make , however that london team set scoring records so his stats may be a bit inflated. Mantha is on the highest scoring q team by a lot but compared to some of the whl teams Val D'or is not setting any marks here.

There actually has never been a player who scored 50 or more goals in their draft year in the CHL and busted.

How many people have put up 50 goals in their draft year and busted? Go look up that ;)

Here's a few player drafted out of the CHL who put up 50 goals , or came close , in their draft year's who are busts.

Only looked between 1990-2010.

Pavel Brendl , Oleg Saprykin (47 goals) , Rico Fata (43) , Eric Chouinard , Daniel Tkazchuk (45), Josh Holden , Jaroslav Svejkovsky , Terry Ryan , Todd Warriner (41 in 50) , Brandon Convery (40 goals in 44 games) , Trevor Halverson , Mark Greig

I don't think Mantha will be added to this list in a couple of years but it is a possibility.

Maybe he is first but the list of guys to actually hit 50 in their draft year is a little different and has been posted around here somewhere. He would be the first bust if I remember right since 2000 on that list if it somehow did happen.

Didn't know we were playing the "almost" game. Take out who didn't hit 50.

Pavel Brendl, Eric Chouinard, Josh Holden, Jaroslav Svejkovsky, Terry Ryan, Trevor Halverson, and Mark Greig. All were from 1993-2000 :laugh: No 50G draft year busts in 15 years.. hmm..

You're looking for this.

the list itself is actually pretty impressive too:

guys that were drafted that put up 50 goals in the CHL the first year they were draft eligible since 2001-2002(there may have been one or two that put up 50 the first year they were eligible and then weren't drafted although that sounds unlikely it isn't something I checked):

Anthony Mantha
Jeff Skinner
John Tavares
Steven Stamkos
Patrick Kane
Sidney Crosby
Joffrey Lupul

Okay, was outscoring him until a few days ago. Still basically equal in PPG. But the point still stands, Drouin went 3rd overall.

If comparing Drouin to Mantha, it's only fair to compare Mantha's last year, to Drouin this year, seeing as Mantha is a '94 born, while Drouin is '95 born, and has one more year of junior eligibility left.

He's a whopping like 6 months older...

Lol at this tired argument. They are 6 months apart and have the same amount of CHL experience

You know it's bad when you have to use technicalities to justify your opinion. Drouin is a stud, birth year doesn't really mean much in that regard. Don't knock Mantha because he's played well, we should all be excited when a big guy like him comes around and lights up the scoreboard in a special way. Is he the greatest thing since sliced bread? No, and we should note when he doesn't play well, but that doesn't necessarily mean that if he doesn't score, he isn't trying.

Both the "birth year" and "consistency" arguments are lazy (with respect to Mantha) and don't address real concerns with Mantha, like his defensive awareness and concerns about his checking ability.

I wasn't knocking Mantha? The people comparing an 18 y/o to a 19 y/o.. Sure. Compare mantha to other 19 y/o's, not 18 y/o's.

Did you not see the other posts pointing out the 6 month difference in age and the relatively equal amount of junior experience?

So under your absurd theory, one cannot compare an 18 year 11 month and 30 day old person with a 19 year 0 month and 0 day old person...

Think about your logic

Literally none of those players put up 50 goals

Apparently I'm not executing my argument properly, which is that the Wings will not give Mantha an NHL roster spot based on his Q domination as a 19 year old.

He has good speed, a great shot, and is a beast in terms of his physicality relative to his peers. I also think the "laziness/inconsistency" problem is overblown. But does he have dominant numbers against men? Is he useful in any respect if he isn't on a top two skilled line? Is he the speediest guy on the ice such that he's a force at the NHL level? Is his shot so good that Brett Hull would quiver? No, no, no and no.

Look - I love Mantha's game. I can't remember the last time I was this stoked about a Red Wings prospect. I could honestly see him as the next Corey Perry. But I'm not looking at his career as a fan of hockey; I'm looking at his career as a fan of the Wings. And without a complete game such that he is a clear fit on a 3rd NHL at worst, then it will be a surefire no-go with respect to him seeing steady NHL time next year.

Who is saying that the Wings are going to give Mantha a roster spot because of his domination in the Q? You are arguing with no one.
