People were saying he would go top 10 in a redraft. You are right the hype was absolutely out of control. "81 goals in 81 games, lock to be top goal scorer" is all we heard. But then that usually happens when a team has a mediocre prospect pool, a guy having a successful junior season gets over hyped.

Mediocre? Tell me again how many teams have produced more nhlers with their prospect pool at the time Mantha was drafted?

Mrazek, Nyquist, Tatar, Sheahan, Jurco, Pulkinnen, Glendening, Nestrasil, Marchenko, Andersson, Ferraro and Mantha, Athanasiou, Ouellet, etc knocking on the door

Thanks for the laugh

No and it's not even debatable. That 2015 draft was so strong that it was a ludicrous suggestion at the time and looks even more horrible today.

No, just the prospect pool at the time which while decent lacked top tier talent. It is quite likely the reason why people were more susceptible to the hype. I don't blame Wings fans, any other fan base would likely have reacted the same. Perhaps the word "mediocre" is a bit harsh. To be honest I can't even remember which of the Wings prospects had already graduated that year.

Mantha was drafted in 2013? Anyways no it really was not a ridiculous statement to make that a 6'5 player scoring 81 in 81 wouldn't go top 10 in a redraft.

The only players you could say had a better draft +1 would be Mack, Barkov, Drouin, Monahan, Jones and Nuke.

Its true that at the time he probably would go top 10. This is more of a lesson on how silly it is to do redrafts so quick after the original draft, and how quickly things can change for better or worse.

If we did a redraft now he would probably go late first or maybe slip to the beginning of the second round.

Mantha is doing fine, not every player's progression is linear and on a set time scale. Mantha has improved his all-around game leaps and bounds and all of the offensive and physical attributes are still very much present. He's going to be a good NHLer, of that I have little doubt.

As a side note, I find it very interesting that whenever the Mantha prospect thread blows up there will be Leaf fans in here sh****g on him. Now I don't want to point the finger at all Leafs HFers because it's typically the usual suspects. If you ask me, I think it has nothing to do with Mantha and everything to do with Larkin, angry that the Larkin vs Nylander argument is pretty much settled for the time being (though who knows what the future holds). We got a guy at 15 who so far looks to be better than the guy they got at 8. That's why they need to rip on Mantha and tear him down.

I think he'd land right where he did. Just looked at the draft results from '13 and there certainly aren't more than 20 guys I'd take over him.

No disagreements with me there. I always laugh when people make redraft threads just one season later as if there's been enough time to properly judge a player.

Still see Jeff Carter when I watch him play. He broke his leg people and lost significant time as a result. Everything the Wings want him to be working on he has bought in and checked the scoring ego at the door. I mean when a kid scores his first career hat trick in pro and says it was a relief as his first words not that was fun it tells you what he still thinks.

Mantha has been exceptional this year, has been the best player on the ice a lot of times, best player on the team around 3/4 of the season. Grand Rapids offense started out Anaheim Ducks bad. Keep stat watching though. He is magnificent at protecting the puck, a great passer, extremely good skater for his size and has an incredibly heavy shot.

Downgrade him all you want, he is still the sky is the limit kind of guy with his tools. Keep in mind we were expecting him to be building chemistry with Larkin this year. Really the only downside is I thought they would get the full AHL slate to get to know each other for the future. Obviously good for Larkin, but his numbers would likely be silly good with the way he is actually playing if he was with a player like Larkin.

Mantha untouchable? For the right offer?

They'd only move him for a young, good defenseman that can move the puck. I'm not sure he's worth that right now, however. Red Wings aren't giving away a 6'5, 220 pound scoring winger with high potential for free.

Well we have a few but not much NHL experience. Beaulieu, Pateryn, we may trade Nygren's rights who is one of the best d in SEL. We may ship you Markov too.

I think what Claypool means is as part of a package for a legitimate NHL defenseman. The Wings aren't trading Mantha for a decent but unspectacular defenseman. Those can be had in free agency. Even if Mantha busts, it makes more sense to risk keeping him than it does to flip him for the level of defenseman that the Wings organization is replete with.

Will make his NHL-debut with Tomas Tatar and Pavel Datsyuk.
WOW. First game in the NHL must be exciting enough for a young player, but he also gets none other than Pavel Datsyuk as a linemate. Hope he does well.

BTW, according to stats on hockeydb.com, amongst the 5 players 6'5" or taller who were selected in the 1st round of the 2013 Entry Draft, only Nikita Zadorov made it to the NHL for even a single game before this year. Mike McCarron has now been called up twice by the Habs this season, and both Samuel Morin and Frederic Gauthier have yet to play in the NHL (no doubt they both will eventually).

So, it isn't unusual for over-grown prospects like Mantha to take their time getting to the NHL.
