I'm not unaware of anything. I'm just not someone who simply buys into the hype machine that is the draft year in and year out. I'm not saying Mackinnon won't be a great player despite a poor WJC, or that Drouin will be better or worse, or anything other than the fact that how can you expect a kid who played poorly in a tournament with his best peers to jump into that large of a role immediately in the NHL?

you either didn't watch the tourny close enough or havnt seen anything in the history of the 1st overall pick. ill give u an example of 2011s draft 1st overall (Who didn't make team canada wjc without the help of a lockout) Ryan Nugent Hopkins.... well hes looking pretty good. Also 8th overall pick made team canada and he hasn't looked bad either (despite having a very horrible WJC) Sean Couterier. he can easily play a role in the NHL and he will, the guy is a special talent and the 2min a game spott gave him u could see he was dynamite.

He looked brutal in the WJC... like completely useless. There is also a difference between not being chosen because the team wants a different type of player and sucking in the tournament.

Again, I'm not saying he won't turn into a great player. But it's foolish to expect him to be a 1st line C his first year in the league. Or any draftee for that matter.

I still think Komisarek will be better off getting traded to a welfare team to help them make the salary floor. He has a $4.5M cap hit and only gets paid $3.5M each of the next two seasons.

Komisarek has that "deserves a fresh start" feel to him. I think someone like Garth Snow or Stevie Y would take a chance on him for more than what a lot of people would think he is worth.

Not just that, but Komisarek might be held till next season's deadline. He would have a lot of appeal then as well, because he would be a player that could be used by cap max teams to unburden additional cap room, since Komi frees up almost $5M in cap room after the 2014-15 season.

He's not a likely candidate for amnesty buy-out.

Agreed. You can also add in that the new cba allows a team to retain a portion of the traded players salary. That could make him quite attractive to a cap floor team and would still be cheaper than buying him out.

How is a kid who looked terrible in the WJC supposed to be a 1st line center in the NHL next year?

In their draft years...

Jonathan Toews - 2 points in 6 games
Ryan Nugent-Hopkins - Didn't make the WJC team
Tyler Seguin - Didn't make WJC team
Matt Duchene - Didn't make WJC team
Jordan Staal - Didn't make WJC team
Bobby Ryan - Didn't make WJC team
Eric Staal - Didn't make WJC team

MacKinnon made the WJC team, as a 17 year old, in a lockout year.

That's pretty good.

He also played scrub minutes, and wasn't given the opportunity to make a significant impact on games, because the idiot behind the bench.

MacKinnon is a special talent.

Sure is.
How many of them jumped from jr to 1st line players in their rookie years ?
I believe that was the point of the original question.

Either way I don't think it can be argued if MacKinnon got his fair shake or not.. He hardly played and it's definitely not be because of his skills. Once he was put out there he felt like he had to do a lot more to impress which caused him to get dumb penalties.. Still if we judged all prospects off WJ performances how would Angelo Esposito look?

Exactly... even Stamkos was very mediocre in his first NHL season.
