Only two interested teams, and neither of them have that pressing a need for Lu. A position of strength if I've ever seen one.

I say you wait until after the season starts to make a deal. Let things get uncomfortable and awkward with having both goalies. Let the media in Vancouver put pressure on gillis to make a move.

I will lose all respect for John Shannon if leafs don't get Luongo. He's been pushing it non-stop for weeks. In fact, according to him, today is the day it's supposed to happen.

Won't he just use the Burke firing as an excuse if it doesnt happen?

He can make any excuses he wants, I totally agree I will lose all respect for him, his credibility will be shot. He's been on this for months. He either said today or tomorrow, but I'm really starting to doubt this even happens.

Can they buyout Ballard? I still don't fully understand buyouts. Can teams only buyout players that they signed themselves?

They can buy out two contracts.....they do not have a lot of players signed for next season and not a lot of cap to sign them. Right now they have committed 55,40000 leaving them just under 9 million to sign 10 players.....they need to move Lou and drop salary so that they can sign players to ice a team.

I'd rather not trade for Luo so Vancouver can be in disarray. And then when they don't win a cup a cup and all of their top players are old/gone I can laugh at the pathetic fans. Gilles doesn't control the field here. Luongo's contract is ****. Taking it would mean Nonis has gone bananas. I'll do it for Connolly , Lombardi and a second. Then later flip him for a 1st and a prospect.

That was a joke. But still please, no Luongo

If anybody offered that he would have been gone a year ago.

Yeah I know they can buy out 2 players, but I just wasn't sure if there are limitations on who they can buy out.

There are a few guys they can just let walk, and then find cheaper replacements for, but you're right, they're in a really tight spot if they hold on to Lu.

I really think Nonis going to sit tight this year. No one could blame him, and the prize should be a top player at the draft.

Yeah, except it's not really up to Nonis, it's what leafs ownership wants, and they want to win now.

got a link?

Closest thing to the board saying they want to win now is...

"I can tell you our ownership wants to win," Anselmi said. "The singular focus here is all about winning. Dave and his staff are looking at continuing a process here that has been under way." - Anselmi

Pretty generic, I hope they want to win. But win now? There has been a lot of talk about winning from the board.

The last week has been full of it.

When asked how they could get the fans back, it was all about putting a winning product on the ice.

Does that mean playoffs? Win a division? Conference? The cup?

No specifics have been given.

Nonis has eluded that they said there was no pressure to make the playoffs at all costs ( trading young prospects)

Which team doesn't want to win now? Doesn't mean Nonis is going to trade the 1st, prospects, etc for some short term success. I guess we will know which way Dave is leaning this week, before the start of the season.

Trading for Luongo isn't that short-sighted as he is 33yrs old and not 38yrs old..

You need a link to tell you that management wants to win now?

everyone wants to win now if possible. but sometimes we short term pain is better for long term gain. it's pure speculation to say ownership is not willing to put their trust in nonis, even if it means sitting tight and drafting high again.

the likes of bob mclowan and others brained washed leaf nation into thinking ownership was desperate and wanted the Lu trade so bad that they fired Burke over it. It's pure speculation.

then the likes of shannon said nonis is a intrim gm, before changing their story to he'll get fired if we don't make the playoffs. it's all pure speculation.

i just hope they put their trust in nonis. so far i have no reason to doubt that they won't.

It depends on the price. If Gillis is asking for a 1st and/or prospects, I wouldn't do it. I don't think setting up a 4 year "win-now" window is a smart move for the Leafs at the price of a building block or two. If Dave's feeling the pressure from management, I am sure he will get something done this week.

btw i'm for the Lu trade if it doesn't cost us an arm and a leg

with a bottom 5 finish it can be argued we would be even in a better of a position for long term though. maybe finally get that C we need.

Today Nonis said he is always looking to upgrade at every position. That includes the goalies. He says his current goalies are fine in terms of skill, maybe lack experience. If the right deal is there that doesn't strip resources, I think he takes it. I wouldn't expect a trade until near the end of camp or into the season when Carlyle sees what he has. I love the quote from Carlyle when asked how he will evaluate his goalies, he did a double take at the reporter and said "if they can stop the puck".

It is pretty short sighted if you have to give up guys like Gardiner+

Gardiner is going to be in the NHL for 10-15 years, his potential is as high as a #2. It's be terrible to give him up for a few years of great goaltending.

God some of the reporters here in T.O are brain dead. No need to wonder why coach give such sarcastic dumb answers. If you ask a stupid question it deserves a stupid response.

" How will you evaluate the goalies" My goodness...

Makes me wonder if those sarcastic comments fit the image MLSE is trying to portray.

lol it was funny today when a reporter asked him if he wants the team to be more truculent (ie. burke lingo). Carlyle said something like 'i'm just a guy from Sudbury' and that they don't use fancy lingo like that

it's good that he's trying distance the team a little from burke's promises and take a little pressure off

DoI have to expand? Yeah show me a link where they want to trade away picks and prospects for immediate results. Ofcourse all owners want to win. MLSE is no different than the other 29. Show me a link that says we expect the playoffs this year.
