That's the problem. Elite goalies don't just come up on the market every year.
If the leafs were a contender with a Luongo trade I'd say sure... but they're not. They have more holes to fill and by the time they fill those holes Luongo will be older and still have a horrid contract that just continues to get worse. I'm undecided about acquiring Luongo... I think it definitely hinges on what we give up.

Just so everyone understands, I'm expecting our team to improve because of coaching change alone.
Carlyle likes defense, and that's great for us, because our D has tons of skill that's been wasted by Wilson for years.

Luongo will be 34 in a couple of months. He has at best 4 seasons left where he will be good. The Leafs will not be ready to compete for a cup in the next couple of years. Lu doesn`t make sense for this team, if we get him it will be a mistake that will haunt us for a long time.

You make moves to fill holes in you club. Losing Kessel will open up a giant hole that will be extremely hard to fill with another talent like Phil.

You're not making sense.

Wouldn't the best way to retain Kessel or make this a desirable place for FA's be by building the best Team possible?

RC has some input on players he'd like
McClement is a favorite of his

A good guess Nonis will get a few more guys like this for him
and hopefully dump some dead wood like mccarthur and lombardi

You think Kessel cares about waiting for that superstar to develop in 4-5 years?
If we don't make the playoffs before re-signing Kessel, he will be gone. Think about how big of a loss that will be.

Hyperbole, you have no clue what's going on in PKs mind and what matters to him.

Your scare tactics won't work on me.

He chose to sign with a team that had already announced it was rebuilding/retooling and walked from a true cup contender, what does that say about him?

And if he wants out, well you don't think we could deal him to someone?

I don't want to do a Vince Carter here and make moves for the TEAM just to satisfy 1 player on the TEAM. If being here means that little to him, then trade his butt out of town.

I would prefer it if the Leafs went hard after Bernier.

Frankly, i'd like to see what the two tenders we have can do under RC s system in this shortened season.

We should have a good idea what is what by the 20/25 game mark in the season.

Why?
I keep asking here why everyone is so high on Bernier, but I never get an answer.

Bernier is just Reimer 2.0

Hope, potential, it just gives you another % odds shot that a player could turn into something special , Bernier is still in that grey area where some feel he still has a legit shot at that happening.

As opposed to Luongo, who is already established. Would I accept Bernier on the Leafs for peanuts? Yea, but trading valuable assets for a hope and a dream is a bad way to manage assets.

I'm not "so high" on Bernier, I'd just rather take a chance on a promising 24 year old goalie than take on Luongo's retirement contract.

I think about it like this: Luongo has probably 5 or 6 good years left in him. Will Toronto be in a position to win a cup in that window? I don't think so...particularly not if even Vancouver wants to be rid of him while already in a position to win a cap. We need our Schneider/Halak/Elliot/Price/Ward/Quick/Hiller.

So avoid the extra 4-5 years during which Luongo's contract would cripple the team afterward, try for a much younger, much cheaper goalie. If that works out, it's a goalie you'll still have around when the team is finally a contender.

How is Bernier more promising than Reimer? He hasn't proven squat, on a very good team.

He isn't, but why wouldn't you want to double your chances at the most important position there is?

would you guys trade gardiner for Schneider?

This fits in with nonis' plan to trade young players for young players.

Don't think Vancouver is interested in trading away Schneider at all. In the end they'd rather take a rough deal to move Luongo's contract than a great deal for Schneider. IMO of course.

As in all moves GHHT, cost is always a factor.

Would i do a Colb or Ashton or Blacker or 2013 2nd for Bernier, maybe.

Well that depends. If it was for the same assets you would have otherwised traded for Luongo and his sea-anchor of a contract?

I'd be ok with getting Lou if it we manage to land a couple of top tier UFAs in the off season, atleast then Lou's short timeline would have some real meaning to it.

If we had landed Parise/Suter, i'd be all in on Lou.

If say, we land Getz and Perry, once again i'd be all in on Lou.

What we are now and where we are headed, no thanks on Lou even if what we trade is reasonable.
