Against a team that lost 5 games in a row I think they said NYI were missing 5 regulars and including last night only scored 6 goals in 6 games and it was a tight game all night. A team playing that bad we should have dominated and we didn't.
Missing seven regulars (six covid, one injury), including their captain (and #2 goal scorer in the last 3+ seasons), and their two best defencemen.

first time poster. Good game and couldn't be happier for Woll. Love seeing all the postgame celebration with him in the middle and the locker room stuff. The comradery is great to see.

I gotta add that the massive gap in physicality is a concern for me. Every now and then it shows it shows its ugly head when a team just hits us hard. Seems like none of our D play a physical game which is a shame. The one guy that really throws his body around with a purpose is Simmonds and god bless him for that. RItchie has shown this recently too which is a welcome sight, but it's still not enough. This feels like it's going to bite us again come playoff time.

Forgot to mention when they lose that it's ok because they won the 'expected' game.

Some people do care more about how the team plays than just on whether they win or lose, yup, and aren't too happy with a lucky win and aren't too upset with an unlucky loss.

Muzzin laid a few last night as well but that's about the extent of it.

Welcome aboard.

Nylander played a little scared last night, thought he was past that but it was apparent last night.
Seems to be something we just need to get use to at this point.

Nylander is 25, he is what he is at this point, I don't think there is much more "peak" to his game IMO! He's got all kinds of talent, but he's also woefully inconsistent.... he'll have a string of games where he looks like a top 5 NHL winger out there, and he'll follow it up with another string where he looks like an ECHL calibre style. At the end of the day, hes 30-35 goal/70 point player average 1st line winger, that's assuming he can slightly tip the edge to playing more good than bad games.

Loved this game from start to finish.

how many Low-Event games have we just absolutely dominated this year?

OTT (3-1)
VGK (4-0)
BOS (5-2)
PHI (3-0)
NSH (3-0)
NYR (2-1)
NYI (3-0)

Those are 7 games that come to mind where we have completely controlled the game start to finish. Usually it is us getting dominated in the low event games. Such a welcomed sight being on the other side of these games for a change.

Every time the Leafs score first in the game they inevitably show that climbing statistic of the Leafs record when they score first in the game. I think now we are 8-1-1 if I'm not mistaken. Whenever I see that graphic, I'm like ah f*** you guys are just trying to jinx the Leafs. But the truth is, when we score first, our system gets as tight as a drum. The odd time we break down, we have had the tending to cover up the mistake. Something all good teams get. And that 1-0 lead usually gets carried out for a while as a result. We've killed penalties exceptionally, and we just limit transition chances. To the point where if we score that 2nd goal, it's pretty well been curtains at that point.

We are winning the exact way that is the most predictable way to consistently win night in night out. More importantly, this is the exact way you win in playoffs. Limit chances, take advantage of the breakdowns the other way.

I wouldn't say the pendulum swings quite that far.

It was a COVID decided game folks .. don't read much into it .. Isles depleted .. Woll played well which I expected as Leafs D let him play his 1 on 1 game which he is very very good at .. Woll won't look as good in a game full of odd man breaks on him .. give him a 1 on 1 like a breakaway and like I have been telling you guys he is best tender we got .. but he still needs to work on his angles and his positioning

Maybe he should have tried to work with the players instead of being an archaic asshole who would force the game on them.
Well then! That's the thing about trying to get 20 men to play as a unit, sometimes you have to be an asshole and force them into paying attention to details for the good of the team. Break poor habits that they've developed over years of coaches not challenging them to change, because they don't want the prodigy getting peeved, so instead just let them do what they want.

It's weird that you're so offended that the players have had to buckle down in order to win in the world's toughest league. What wins in Junior doesn't win in the pros.

It's like breaking a good thoroughbred, it's done in stages and it's sometimes seen as cruel to people who are casual observers, but when done right it often results in a champion.

While you may not like or approve of Babs methods, you are starting to see the fruit of the seeds he planted. No reason to be bitter my friend he didn't do any damage to them nor you.

No, we're seeing the results of a good GM getting quality defensive players, a good coach instilling a good system, and good players playing good defensive hockey. Babcock has nothing to do with us playing good defensive hockey now, and he didn't plant any seeds. Not positive ones at least.

They only had four regulars out on Covid protocol. Johnston isn't a regular, he's played 5 minutes in one game this season and averaged 8 minutes in 12 games last year. Beauvillier must have been an inconclusive test or false positive because he only missed the Calgary game, he was back in the lineup against the Leafs.

Obviously it still sucks, and add to that Pulock out with an injury and Nelson going down early in the game. But they were pretty far off from Ottawa territory.

Edit: Forgot Bellows, but he's not really a regular either.

Outscoring a team by 3, shutting them out AND outshooting them 40-20 is pretty much a lopsided victory.

Failed spectacularly, then.

So Kyle >>> Lou at adding grit and defense.

The young core was suddenly good defensively the moment Keefe took over. Weird development.

i don’t know why you keep acting like I’m a Dubas hater? I don’t really care who the GM is, as long as they produce a winner. I’m not on team Lou or team Dubas, so stop trying to mention it like that.

I also love how you continually take responsibility off the players. It doesn’t matter who the coach is, they should have and could have been better defensively in 17/18 and 18/19, they just weren’t. That’s on them as much as it’s on the coaching staff! We also saw in the docuseries that Keefe had the exact same complaints that the past coach did so save it lol.

okay let’s give context, they played better for about 5 games and then completely reverted back to the same play they did under Babcock. They were a lottery team that benefited from a Covid expanded playoffs. So let’s call a spade a spade it wasn’t until the full season under keefe and some personnel changes in the summer where they did find their stride defensively.

It's crazy how many tight games we are winning in this fashion with a league low shooting%

This team going to skyrocket when the big guns get going
