Connolly is being Pejorative Sluredly underrated around here. Obviously he's not worth 5mil a year but what else are we going to spend that cash on? He's a good player and is a great defensive forward. He's a lock to be on the shutdown line imo

Clearly the Leafs feel as if the roster spot is better used by another forward.

He was part of the PK last year on this 29th ranked defensive team. Clearly he isn't going to be any part of any sort of shutdown line in Toronto.

freaking amazing GIF

Actually, MLSE paid like 5 million bucks in oder to trade Lebda for Franson and a 4th. It's not even my money, and I'm cringing...

lol, who cares, they probably heat the ACC by burning $5 bills

Yes! A great opportunity for Kadri!! **** YEA!

:handclap:

Every little bit helps

I do agree but that will factor into internal budgeting. This is a new tool for teams who feel they deserve something for being a higher earning franchise and also, in a sense, creates a free-market revenue share.

A good idea for the CBA and it allows for GMs on both sides of the fence to solve problems in a mutually beneficial way.

I really think that once GMs figure out the rules we'll be back to trade deadline day specials worth watching.

this deal clears out quite a bit in cap room.... fitting Luongo in soon? no?

Lombardi was -19 last year!

He's the kind of player that teams love playing against. You know he's not going to score. He's not going to drive the net. He's not going hit you. If you try to go around him he'll probably get out of the way and shake your hand on the way by.

He did absolutely nothing to make life difficult for opposing teams. Teams like Boston and Philly lick their chops when they see a guy like Lombardi on the ice.

@DarrenDreger: Leafs have talked about giving younger players a chance. Can't just say it...have to do it. Moving Lombardi opens up a spot.

I wonder who slides in there. Or is it just clearing space for McClement/Connolly

Only caveat with Connolly, he was pretty good on the checking line under Carlyle last year, blocking shots, making smart plays. He can also move up with injuries, so less useless than Lombardi who brought zero to the table apart from "what a great stride".

Good. While I think Lombardi could bounce back, we needed to clear a few roster spots up front and he was the clear candidate to go out the door.

Wish him the best and hope whomever we select with this pick turns out well.

This. I think he'll definitely bounce back well for Phx, probably thrives in their system and puts up ~40 pts. Such as it is to be a Leaf fan. But it's good to clear cap space (if there happens to be a deal where we acquire a high salary player) and a roster spot

Great move to open up a spot for a young player. Surprised they got anything for him.
