Mailloux's tools are NHL star calibre. There's a lot of work to do but the good thing is there's also a lot to work with. He's a long-term project with home run potential.
The one thing I absolutely love about our current brain trust is they will NEVER try to make the player something he isn't. Exploit the reasons you drafted him in the first place and then help the player manage the risk factors and decision making. Under the previous regime he wouldn't ever get the green light to express himself.

Refreshing to see a management team with a clue huh?

Wonder, with more and more stuff like this, if some of the Bergevin disciples will admit they were wrong about his tenure.

Being a GM is more than 'winning trades' and Bergevin didn't understand that.
Serge Savard helped Molson find a GM and recommended Bergevin. I have lifelong respect for Serge but this recommendation really screwed the franchise.

Savard regrets it massively and basically said that Bergevin lied in the presentation cause he never did half the shit he said he would do.
Kinda depressing to read that and hear that. I remember after berg was announced there was an air of positivity around here, new eyes, coming from a winning organization. As much as we all kid he also carried himself well in his interviews at the beginning and his overall wardrobe fit with the idea of "a younger General Manager" with confidence, seeing what he became it's kinda depressing. All the articles from the time talked about him as the opposite to Gauthier, a silly prankster. Compared to the guy who called everyone 'mr."

💯 %. Serge is still someone I love listening to.
I always found it strange he would recommend someone like Bergevin, Serge was noted for his brains and business acumen. Typically people like that would have a hard time endorsing someone with little or no education. So yeah great sales job. :skeptic:

He's got a bomb. Both wrister and clapper.

Hardly ever seen a prospect D shoot the puck as good.
yeah when I first started seeing it I got Ovi/Matthews vibes. I don't know if it's QUITE that good but he's somewhere in that neighbourhood. Don't think he has the release but that's above my weight class analysis wise

Serge had some great moments as Habs GM but made the Chelios and a 2nd for Savard trade, the Leclair and Desjardins for Recchi trade, the Claude Lemieux for Sylvain Turgeon trade and his drafting was abysmal from the mid-80s to the end of his tenure. He loved drafting big WHL players with limited upside.

I also remember hearing that he refused to interview players before the drafts. He was arrogant and thought the Montreal Canadiens were above this and didn't need to.

During the GM search that saw MB get appointed, I remember hearing interviews where Molson wouldn't close the door to having an non-french speaking GM. Serge would have none of this in any interviews or pressers. He basically stated "of course the GM will speak french".

We also had Julien Brisebois right in our own house and the two finalist candidates in Savard's GM hiring process ended up being Bergevin and Pierre McGuire. GULP!!

You can make an argument that Mailloux shoots the puck as hard as any current NHL player. Homerun potential
When Mailloux first started playing for London last year as an 18 year old, I watched a lot of games and many of his forwards couldn't handle his passes as they had so much zip on them.

His wrist shot is lethal and his clapper was recently clocked at 102 MPH.

BriseBois was with Tampa when Bergevin got hired.

The GM was always gonna speak french. Molson was just trying to play both sides so that he would come out on top either way.

You're right...Brisebois had left two years before to go work for Yzerman in TB as his assistant GM. However he was viewed as future GM material before leaving for TB and was a candidate for the Habs GM position when Gauthier got canned. Bergie and Pierre McGuire were the two finalists in the Savard-led process before it was announced that Bergie was the guy.

I was pissed when they let him walk to join Tampa for basically the same title knowing the Habs would need a new GM shortly after his departure.

Very intrigued by how his development goes next season as a pro. He's definitely a project but we finally seem to have a front office that isn't doggedly committed to turning every player into a gritty two-way grinder so hopefully they give him the space to make mistakes and learn to defend without stifling his offensive skills.

If we had Xhekaj, Ghule, Barron and Harris and no one else in the pipeline I'd still have hopes for this dcore to become a Stanley cup competing one. But to know we have Mailloux, Engstrom and Naruto coming up is pretty insane. And also you Beaudin, Struble and Trudeau who have a legit shot at the NHL.
And with Suzuki and his blazing speed we’d be a shoe-in for another lottery pick.

Sergachev was in the NHL at 19, over his age 17 and 18 seasons he played 129 games in the OHL, during Mailloux's age 17 and 18 seasons he played 12 games in the OHL. It's not fair at all to try to compare since Mailloux all but missed 2 years of key development time.
The fact Maillioux is where he’s at today with the development time he has missed is a testament to his raw talent imo. Who knows where he’d be if that hadn’t happened, but he’s going to be a point producing dman in the NHL, no doubts in my mind.

At the time I remember Bergevin was linked to other jobs on the basis of his Blackhawks work, who were considered the model franchise.

We of course found out later during all the Beach stuff that Bergevin was a nobody there and was not a part of the inner circle and had no decision making input at all, but at the time he was considered to be an up and comer.

I really hope this kid has learned his lesson and done everything asked of him. At this point, finally, gets a full hockey season in and ends up highest goal scoring dman in the OHL.
