Brook was definitely hyped and for good reason. He had a couple of excellent training camps, an excellent last season in junior where I think he had about 75 points and played a regular shift on the WJC team. I thought he was going to be a 2nd round steal. I still think he had NHL potential until he blew out his knee.
I thought the Habs had taken 2 nice D between Brook and Fleury.

Not all prospects pan out that's for sure.

I honestly don't remember exactly what I said about Brook but I was fairly high on him. I did expect top 4D from that age 19 production and his previous seasons were good too.

So yeah, I do wonder how Mailloux looks when he turns pro. Not saying he turns into Brook but lets be careful with projecting him due to CHL production. He certainly passes the eye test in terms of how he stands out in the CHL but come on guys... there is a lot of 16 and 17 year olds you can take advantage of.

he was, I was here as well, but I think the expectation was that he'd be a jeff petry lite player, 2nd pairing 2nd PP time. But Chester has been here a while as well and his opinion doesn't need to mimic the herd to trust him. Much like WTK or Whitesnake

What Chester might have said vs what most have said are two different things. I don't remember exactly what everyone says.

The main point here is how much trust do we put into CHL production? I know I was very high on Guhle and I did call him a grade A. Guhle is build from the back end out vs the front end in like Mailloux. Mailloux has focused on learning how to play D better but man... he's got a ways to go yet. I expect him to be on the Barron path to be honest. If he exceeds that, he is above the curve.

Am I drooling or desperate to trade him for Dubois? NO. Is it an automatic no to include him for Dubois? Answer is also no (my opinion). Risky yes but if Mailloux is a must have for the Jets, I take the Panthers pick off the table and I insist on Dvorak being in the deal. That kind of approach.

Brook got injured and his career was derailed. It sucks, but that does not make everyone idiots for thinking he had what it takes to make it. Is anyone who thought Cherepanov would be good a fool?

One thing though, for Brook, the hype came from good production and kinda solid tools. Unlike Mailloux where the hype comes from way above average tools and the hope that he can put it all together.

Apples and oranges.

Agreed. Any fan trying to say that that didn't happen are just wrong. I was high on him but maybe not as high as others. I've learned a lot of pumping up prospects over the years.

I'm not saying Mailloux disappoints like him either. But we have to be humble on projections cause the real truth comes when they turn pro

The one thing that I noticed is some fans who have shallow pools, pump up their prospects. Fans on teams with deep pools are more fair about it. For the most part anyways. Look at how much the Leafs pump up Knies?
Well sure. We wouldn't pump up Suzuki so much if we had a tim Stützle on our team.

We need something to feel good about

Nobody is calling anybody an idiot. It's a conversation and the point here is CHL production can fool you. Brook not reaching his potential was not about his injury. He just was not that good but he was able to perform very well in the CHL.

Who's age 19 season is more impressive? Brook or Mailloux?

Not saying Mailloux bust or disappoints like Brook but are we counting our chickens before they hatch? What I see in Mailloux is someone who is very similar to Barron. Great shot, good size, Great skating, good vision but not known to be shutdown types.

Almost every single one of Mailloux's tools is better than Barron's. Better physicality, better size, better slapper, insane wrister, better creativity. There's a huge gap between Mailloux and Barron.

That's fine, but I disagree. Brook never got a chance to adapt to the pro game as injuries multiplied. He had insane bad luck. He was not a blue chip prospect, but there is no reason to believe he could not have slowly learned the pro game and become an NHL player.

Now, some on this board were calling him a blue chipper and that was a mistake, but he was still a quality prospect.

25/26 is only three years away
Absolutely, but, like Emelin, nothing prevents Michkov from signing another contract in the KHL, rather than come over for the limited ELC for rookies over a minimal 2-year span, even if MON were to .
I don't have to trust chester. I know what was said about Brook on these boards in his age 19 season. Maybe Chester didn't say it but most Habs fans were high on Brook. Maybe not as high as Mailloux today but journeyman narrative from our group towards Brook in his age 19 season was very far from the general consensus.

Go look at Brook's production in his age 19 season and tell me with a straight face that it was not pumped by our herd?
Generally speaking, most Habs fans are high, period.

Are you saying Barron needs to have better gap control to come closer to what Mailloux is as a hockey player? ;)

There was one guy, really. But so vocal about it, it felt like half the board.

Mailloux has all the tools. He's like a Brent Burns. (forward playing defenseman)

We can agree on that but it's the IQ that may hold him back.

I wouldn't compare the two. Mailloux is as toolsy as Sergachev. That's a better comparison. From what I can remember I'd say Sergachev was more toolsy at the same age. I don't think Mailloux's that far off skill wise. Mailloux's shot is absurdly heavy.

Do you mean Brook or Barron? Cause the poster you replied to was comparing Mailloux and Brook. If you think there's a huge gap between Mailloux and Barron, I really believe you're overrating Mailloux or underrating Barron.

So many great offensive Dman in our system, many will need a steady partner presence to execute their game without being a liability. Hutson, Barron, Mailloux are all offence with big question marks at D and Guhle can only play with one of em.

The person I was quoting said he was very similar to Barron.

I made my assessment. If you wish to disagree, you can let the class know why that is.

Guhle and Mailloux is my choice. Providing a safety valve in Guhle for Mailloux's questionnable defensive instincts will allow him to play to his strengths and amaze the fan base.

It's not a player comparison. It's a question on trusting CHL production and who had the more impressive season at age 19.

Mailloux has a lot more goals, and closer to a point per game.

Lets put the stats down cause some probably don't know.

Mailloux (OHL):
* 60 pts with 27 goals in 72 games (games played affected by Covid)
* 51 pts with 24 goals in 56 games (age 19 season)

Brook (OHL):
* 157 pts with 31 goals over 204 games (some games lost due to injury)
* 75 pts with 16 goals in 59 games (age 19 season)

Context:
* Mailloux shot and goal scoring power is better. Not like Brooks shot sucked, Mailloux's shot is just that much better.
* Both players had good skating and size
* Brook put up more points in his age 19 season but who played on the better team or more competitive league?
* Brook was good enough to play with team Canada WJC and was alright.
* Mailloux would of likely made team Canada WJC but his past mistake kept him off their radar.

I do have higher hopes with Mailloux but I also thought Brook would be a top 4D or fringe type. With Mailloux, his offensive tools are top notch but he needs to learn a lot in D zone. When he turns pro, time space and more physical players that also skate well changes things a lot.

What is the probability that either of Mailloux or Hutson are top pairing in the NHL when they reach their prime? Of course there is a chance but I think some are more humble with projecting them vs others.

Sergachev played a much ‘heavier’ game than Mailloux does at the same age. We haven’t seen the best of Mailloux yet, not by a long shot. Once Mailloux fills out, the level of his play will rise significantly. Hence, the reason he should play next season in Laval. He also needs time to bridge the development gap he experienced as a consequence of his long periods of inactivity over the past two and half years. In Mailloux’s case, patience will truly be a virtue for him, the team and its long suffering fans.
