We were talking about whether selecting him was a good idea. Based on his play it’s a fine selection. It’s hard to talk about whether the selection was correct while ignoring the elephant in the room.

Mod directed and crimes, wtf is wrong with you runner?

Don’t talk about that here, it’s a mod directive. :sarcasm:
Ha, you’ve gone rogue. Always entertaining. :sarcasm:

Without getting political on here, because this board isn't the place for it, I don't think it's the job of a country's leader to use their bully pulpit and target an 18 year old kid. It's a bad look.
There are a lot of things JT has done which defy the expected decorum of a country’s leader. He is not a very “serious” statesman in any case.

The pile-on the Habs and Mailloux was at that time overwhelming and preposterous — especially in light of the Hockey Canada revelations that would follow. JT’s criticism of Hockey Canada was less pointed than what his unsolicited commentary was on the Habs and Mailloux.

It stands to say that Mailloux was bullied by a lot of the media and remains in their cross-hairs — think about Arpon Basu’s weeping cry-bullying for instance. They will always snipe at him with this low hanging fruit if he doesn’t give something else for them to talk about… which is partly why he shouldn’t have been picked to begin with.

The missed development time is concerning. It’s hard to make up for those missed games in such an important part of of his development, but I think he can. His game needs some polish on the finer things, but his skills, skating, shot and his propensity to always think offensive are skills our other prospects don’t have. I thought he was a keeper at one point, hopefully the lack of games hasn’t derailed him as a prospect. He’s got a lot to like.

Not ideal

The Twitter writer is entitled to his opinion but the fact remains that Mailloux is still able to keep practicing on his own. It would have been much more concerning had he been told to stop:

« “He’s just practising right now,” Knights GM Mark Hunter said. “His surgeon doesn’t want him in battle drills yet.” »

I haven’t seen the word « setback » being used but rather, it appears that they are acting out of an abundance of caution stemming from his surgeon’s recommendations:

« “He’ll be back sooner or later,” Hunter said. “No exhibition games, and after that, it’s what his surgeon says. If he says he’s ready to go and Logan has all his strength back, then he’ll play.

“We’ve got lots of time to get going. It’s a long season.” »

Hopefully the Habs organization told him to leave fighting out of his repertoire. It's not an important part of the game and it certainly shouldn't be a part of his game.

It also is a negative optic he doesn't need. That whole saga that resulted in him getting hurt there put the maturity question mark back up.

I don’t think he wanted to fight. He got put in a corner where he had no choice, the guy grabbed him.

TBH I didn’t know much about Maillioux at the time of his selection other than his off ice stuff and I thought it was a mistake to pick him at the time, but after watching a lot of video on the kid post draft I don’t have a problem with it, he’s a high end talent.

I think the incident was overblowned tbh. Yeah he shouldn’t have disrespected the female and I’m not condoning the behaviour, but this is a teenage boy. If you don’t think this is happening at every school in the country you are naive. Hockey Canada Orchestrated a coverup for a bunch of rapists while Maillioux gets raked over the coals for making a very poor, immature, bad decision for sure, but this doesn’t make him a monster. It makes him a young boy with some growing up to do.
Bingo. Kids today do not think ahead to the consequences of their actions . Once you click send there is no back tracking. I watched this kid play JR B in London and a limited bit before injury last year. We as Habs fans will be very lucky to have his talent on the team. If not and the new regime trades him we will regret that move. I counselled young offenders at the jail here in London. I had one kid at 15 stab his brother 17 times to death because he drank the last beer with no remorse. His parents fought to have his case in Juvenile Court and won. His record was wiped when he turned 18 and he walked. Here we are punishing a kid who made a very stupid mistake as a minor. Sending a picture of a girl performing consensual oral sex on him 3 days after he arrived in Sweden to his team. He could have skirted things as a young offender but chose to belly up to the bar, plead guilty, apologize and own everything. I am 70 years old and have seen a lot of crap in my time and have watched my kids and grandkids grow up. Today's kids are a different breed. I am am pulling for this kid. Hell Trudeau criticized the pick and the sob has done just as bad of racist shit as an adult. When you point the finger at somebody 3 come back! Go Logan Go!

There was an entire lead up that ended up in that altercation. It wasn't smart at all.
I was at the game. Zito was chirping him every shift they were on together and giving him extra whacks after the whistle. Typical shit OHL officiating. Had they have given Zito an unsportsmanlike and slashing the crap would have ended. He instigated the fight with Logan but I can't remember if it was called.

If he could go back. I'm sure he would agree with you. I know from my experience, that the heat of the moment can do weird things. Sometimes things would get so heated, that I would forget I was 5'7 and think I was 6'5. After getting my ass handed to me a few times. I learned to tone it down. In his case, his size probably made him think that he was a better fighter, than what he is.

anyone disputing his raw tools should be dismissed out of hand.
Exactly! All this talk about him missing so much time blah blah, yes that's true, but how about the fact that when he actually got a chance to play in the OHL he looked dominant? At this point the sky is the limit for him. We are lucky to have him as a prospect. I think he's got a real chance to be special.

Coming from one of the most influential thinkers on my life, I'm humbled! ;)

I haven't been following his injury so I don't know the severity of it. I'm not saying to be worried/not worried about that. Just that, anyone who disputes his tools aren't worth engaging with imo. I'd just ignore them.

From What I saw I was impressed but lots to work on. Injury on top of that is tough and it's gonna make it harder. So I have no problem with people pointing that out. Not the skill though. That's asinine.

I’d give him a pass on what looked like a freak injury. If there were any judgment lapses, then it’ll help with his maturation process as he’s likely to have learned from them.

If he heals correctly, he'll still have his raw tools. He just can't get back the lost development time. Give him the time he need for the healing process then he still have plenty of time to go back developping. Rushing the rehab process of an injury like that can f*** up his entire hockey future.

I was reading this post and agree until the end. I say despite the PM comments (that was out of his decorum) and all the bashing that was never ending, like hey, give this kid a chance and leave him alone, haven't heard of absolution or pardon, I say f*** the negative with Mailloux and the PM have no lesson to give to anyone.

That may wasn't a good pick in the social media circus but on hockey level that was a good pick.
For my part I'm an hockey fan and not some kind of bashing woke that should be looking for real problems in the society. Sorry if I was out of topic but everybody is out of hockey talk on this thread, so that was my opinion.

I can’t stand it when politicos of any stripe try to score points by lambasting pro sports figures or management as if they all had a monopoly on good morals and flawless decision-making. Don’t they have more worldly pursuits to attend to?

What the politicos don’t get is how many of us are immersing ourselves into pro sports not just out of passion or entertainment but to flee them and their divisive, self-centered spiel.

Politicos, please go away. There are other sandboxes where you can prop your “brand”. You don’t need to infect every refuge.

If we don't sign him, we get a 2nd round pick next draft, right?

Would be a good consolation
Unless it's changed, you have to offer the prospect a contract and they have to refuse it. If he refuses it, then you just double the selection number and that's the pick you get.
