With Maillioux having played so little and a late season start due to injury will Montreal elect to not sign him and take the second round pick as compensation? I assume it is a 31st in the second round

I'm pretty, pretty, very pretty sure the team will sign him.
I can't quite tell what I'd do though.

Right now? No way.

If he gets another big injury? Maybe.

Chances are you are not getting a better pick at 63 in 2023.

Mailloux will be signed.
Yep. If a management wants to prove how great their development team now is, there's no better player to work with than him. Because of the time he missed. And because what could be the end result if the said development works well.

Today I learned that Mailloux is able to speak french ! "un pas pire français". Chantal did an interview on 98.5 and mentionned it, he was in a french immersion primary school growing up and spent this summer in MTL with a franco only family.

More importantly she had very positive comments about his character and personal growth, said she was impressed with him "un jeune homme brillant qui travaille fort". Clearly he's getting signed.

[Mailloux segment starts at 46:30, interview is long but interesting]

They'll sign him without a doubt, not signing him at this point would actually generate negative PR for the organization after they talked about rehabilitation and second chances and so on.

It would be like dropping the ball on the kid while he did all they asked him to do.

So you’re saying that no matter how good the player turns out, it will still always have been a bad choice?
I don’t think many would agree with you on that one.
That’s not what I said at all.

The pick (the decision to use that draft pick for that player at that time) was wrong (or bad, whichever).

It’s like saying “taking that shortcut through the scraggly woods was a bad decision”. Even if you do end up at your destination quicker than the other way, it doesn’t change the fact that with the facts available at the time, you took an unnecessary risk when you chose to cut through the scraggly woods.

Another example: asking for another card in blackjack when you already have 18. Even if you hit 21, it’s a ridiculous risk, a bad decision.

I’ve explained why Mailloux shouldn’t have been picked in the first round: he asked not to be picked, he had a looming indefinite suspension, he was not a standout player like a prospective top5 pick.

It’s a pretty simple concept. A bad decision doesn’t mean a guarantee of future failure, and future success doesn’t mean it was always preceded by a good decision.

Guys just needs to get healthy and play. The pre draft stuff seems to have been addressed and answered for. Just needs to develop as a hockey player now.

Yep, there's really nothing to talk about on Logan as a human being unless something else happens but that's true of any hockey player.

He's done everything the organization has asked of him and his comments on the matter when pressed show to me an actual understanding of the concepts he's being taught and not a regurgitation of surface level points.

I was against the selection, as people will remember. But I certainly believe in situations like Logan's that it was him buying into systemic toxic masculinity that is prevalent in locker rooms and not something like Mitch Miller that shows a deeply disturbed, remorseless piece of shit.

Agreed. And I think an underrated point of the matter is that he was a 17 year old kid trying to impress a team of 30 year olds half way around the world. Would have been nice if one of his teammates took him under their wing and spoke with him instead of sharing the image publicly.

It's bad for him he speaks french. It's an unnessary skill and because some of the management speak french he will have preference over those who doesn't speak french. It just started with "maman of all the Habs player Chantal Macchabé" and it's gonna aggravate with time. He will play when another D is on the bench : because he speaks french. The best for the Habs is avoid anyone who speaks french. Problem resolved, Logic and simple.

What strikes me about Mailloux are all the reports showing progress and character and taking full advantage of the mentorship and resources that the Habs have made available to him.

It’s not just important for his personal development but it hopefully translates into someone who will appreciate how he was helped and will understand the value of giving back. If he can do that, it should also be easier for him to become the best player he can be.

Habs have also been collaborating with the London Knights who are currently Mailloux's primary hockey family. Good way for Hugo to strengthen their relationship with the Hunter brothers and maybe get some added future insight on OHL players.

I still can't get my head around around all the fuss with this and why we can't get over this whole story.

Montreal hired Rob Ramage, and no one even blinked. The guy killed someone in a DUI, spent 4 years in prison and now everything is dandy.

Mailloux (as a dumb teenager) shared a video of his gf doing stuff, plead guilty and paid his dues, and it's as if he committed genocide.

Am I missing something here? Isn't killing someone actually worse? It's not like Mailloux raped someone or anything...

Now people are asking him to give 50% of his salary to victims of sexual abuse.. are they asking Ramage to give 50% of his salary to victims of DUIs?

The off-ice work is a pre-requisite to being offered a contract, not a guarantee. It will all come down to this upcoming season in the OHL. He's played only 31 games total over the past 2 years and still needs to prove himself on the ice. There will be plenty of time to discuss if he will/won't get a contract once the season has played out.

You rarely see a first-rounder not getting an ELC though...
