Only D outproducing him in the entire AHL is Olen Zellweger - a small, fully offensive, defenseman.

Mailloux also missed out on a whole year of development.

17 points in 30 games in his first year in the A at 20 years old is extremely impressive production.

You mean among rookie defensemen.
Clarke and Zellweger are the only ones with more pts.

This kid just needs time. You can make an argument that his upside is as high or higher than any Habs prospect.

As long as he continues to develop in the AHL and not promoted to the NHL, he and Lane could become the best PP dmen!!!

I visualize a Xhekaj/Mailloux pairing. They are playing well together in Laval.
But that’s Laval.

As some here know, I have closely followed Mailloux’s development over the past 18 months and still remain unconvinced as to this young player’s skating ability. I have yet to see Mailloux recover the puck behind his net and consistently beat forecheckers and then transport the puck with speed through the neutral zone. And that’s at the AHL level. The mantra that Mailloux is an elite or strong skater is, like most mantras: false.

His other attributes that I have often commented on: his passing, shot and offensive vision, remain at a high NHL level. But if Mailloux was called up now he would be among the least mobile of our defensemen, being superior to only Savard and Kovacevic and only barely.

I remain hopeful that Mailloux, who lost two years of his critical development, will gain the required mobility to exploit his other talents. But if I see no material improvement by next training camp, I will have to re-assess my projections for this most intriguing prospect.

Outsider, why is Xhekaj in Laval?? Injury reconditioning?
He wasn't very good before his injury, his ice time fell off, and has been outplayed by struble, the newcomer

He did miss 7 games with a shoulder injury. When he was ready to come back they decided to send him down to work on his defensive game. He has played 10 games so far and is doing great. Habs have a plethora of promising young D so this is not a bad thing.
The steady emergence of Struble and Harris has changed the dynamics of the team’s short and long term plans. This wealth or depth of defensive talent presents a skillful manager with multiple options. For me, I use that depth to move up in the upcoming drafts to secure a player that I consider has a reasonable chance as developing into a difference maker.

This would be the essence of being governed by the principles of a calculated risk. It worked for Nimitz at Midway. And may well be the catalyst to moving beyond the stagnation of mediocrity that has beset this franchise for the past three decades or more.

Great production so far in AHL. If he continue to develop his game, this guy will be a monster. I always liked him and I think he have the potential to forget about P.K. Subban. He have the same mentality, same offensive mindset and fun to watch like P.K. It's not a hot take, he have same production at same age in AHL than Subban so far!

I'm 100% hype since his draft year about him.

Took a step back this year right from the get-go. Was getting way to adventurous in his own zone both with the puck and with coverage that led to lots of turnovers/GA. And then went on a binge of undisciplined penalties, some backbreakers for the team. Add to that his offensive output plummeted.

So as @Tyson said, once he got hurt, and they brought up Struble who played much, much better than him, they sent him to Laval to sort things out.

Unfortunately, although his offense has really exploded in Laval, he's still way too lackadaisical in his own zone. And we are absolutely stacked on LD and the way Struble is playing, I can't see him losing the starts. Struble has been our best D overall since he's come up, IMO. X will be back, though. He's only 22. We'll surely be making some trades to break-up that logjam we have on LD.

I wonder what kind of skating and hockey he was engaged on during his time not playing in the ohl. Was he playing a lot of pick up hockey, or none at all?

I agree and I hope so. Love this kid. But it sure is going to be interesting to see how Hugo deals with this. I'm sure they have no inkling on trading Matheson as he's a hometown boy and puts up numbers. And Harris has been solid and also is only 23. So on LD, atm:

Guhle
Harris
Struble
Matheson
Xhekaj

What do we do?

My guess is they keep X in the A the rest of the way (barring injuries) and reassess at next years camp. And in the meantime, look at offers. Good position to be in. They don't need to make any panic trades and thus some team might overpay for Harris or ?

If he wasn’t playing hockey against competition of his level or better and was just skating that would be as beneficial to his development as running on a treadmill.

If they plan on bringing over Engstrom to Laval I wonder if they would put him with Mailloux assuming after the trade deadline that Xhekaj is with the Habs or elsewhere. Could be an interesting duo, as I assume the plan will be for Hutson to be paired with Reinbacher, assuming Hutson turns pro and Reinbacher is in Laval with him. That would be one crazy looking top 4 in Laval, young as shit but it would be fun to see.

Seems more likely than not we should see that coming into play.

Trudeau would play 3rd pair with an AHL vet at that point and we know Norlinder will be back in Sweden after this season.

I wonder about that. Especially when it comes to skating, working on skating, and developing one's skating stride.

I know a lot of great skating hockey players that were first figure skaters. Playing hockey isn't the only way to develop one's skating stride.

It will be interesting to see how many AHL games Hutson and Reinbacher play in. Caufield, Harris, and Struble didn't play too many.

No question any skating would help but keeping any kid out of organized, high level hockey during his 17 and 18 key development years is going to have a materially adverse affect on that player.

It remains to be seen if the talented Mailloux can overcome that challenge.
