Not that I want to start pre trading DMen but aren’t we reaching a breaking point here

Xhekaj, Guhle, Harris, matheson, kovacevic, mailloux, norlinder, Barron, savard have all shown to be competent nhl dmen. Then we have Hutson reinbacher and engstrom on the way we need to find a partner who needs a d and has a top 6 winger prospect available
Trudeau is also coming along well

Play Barron top 4 min this year, then ship him in a package for a high end forward next summer.

Trade Savard for a pick at the tdl or next summer.

Hutson should play some nhl games this season. If he looks very good, then trade Harris for a late 1st round pick next summer. If he doesn't look ready, then keep Harris and Hutson can start in the ahl.

After this season:
Guhle - Matheson
Hutson/Harris - Reinbacher
Xhekaj - Mailloux
Kovacevic

Ahl: Trudeau, Engstrom, Norlinder

After 2 years, Matheson will have 1 year left on his contract. Consider trading him to make room for Engstrom.

Harris is a ufa after next season. He's probably not gonna resign with how crowded the Habs blue line is when he can get more opportunity and money in the USA. Hes probably gonna be packaged. But also gotta consider, Habs have some bad contracts like Armia. I wouldn't be surprised if Harris and a 3rd, etc is included in a deal to ship out a bad contract

Harris is rfa when his contract ends

Armia will have 1 year left after this year. No need to give up any good asset to trade him when we could just send him to the ahl. The habs won't be in need of cap space.

Good game tonight against a really good group of forwards. He didn’t look out of place which is a great sign.

I would still let him play a season in the AHL, they could call him during the season for a few games but there is no rush right as we have enough bodies and players to evaluate at that position.

With Guhle, Harris, Xhekaj, Barron and Kovacevic that’s a lot of people.

Xhekaj won’t be sent down, his status is bigger than his role on the team right now.

Management like Harris even though he seems like the odd man out.

Kovacevic has a good camp and he’s big in the locker room.

That leaves Barron who I’m not a fan of. His camp hasn’t been great but he already had problems with going to Laval last year and did produce well in the limited amount of time he had with club. This is the player you want to evaluate at the NHL level and see what he can give long term.

There’s no downside to take their time with Mailloux. A season in Laval will only do some good in the long run.

Mailloux has been take big step every game. Hemiss lot of hockey in the past few years he could hold is own in the NHL but getting a full year of hockey is the most important. In the AHL getting top minute getting experience will be even better for is progress than getting 10min in the. NHL and AHL will be very significant competition.

Wow, it sounds like we're as close to a consensus as we're likely to be on this board. Everyone agrees Mailloux looks great and could be brought up, but should spend time in Laval.

Anyone disagree?
Nope , he's only 20 years old until April , he gets better every pro game he's played so far even if its preseason , after a full AHL season he's gonna be a force

Last night was the first real look I got with Mailloux. He looks to be a battler out there and I do like his game. Nothing really stands out to me in terms of any big negatives.

Looks like a guy that already has pro experience to me.... like where Barron is now.

I was thinking more of a Gallagher. Also that's the last time I go on spotrac to get my cap info lol. Armia and Savard just need a few additional assets (picks/mid tier prospects) to be shipped off

So develop Barron into something good and just throw him away for a top forward? I’d trade a couple D prospects instead someone who is developing in Barron. I’m saying that he’s been a bum in the preseason though

Mailloux reminds me of Burns in his good years at the point. Takes a very good wrist shot on net almost everytime he can. It's sad to think that only of our 4 future top 4 D man will play on the first PP. Will it be Guhle, Reinbacher, Mailloux or Hutson?
The best one will, I also get the feeling we eventually trade Hutson. No evidence or basis beyond the appearance that Gorton and Hughes are size queens and could see him being packaged for someone like (read not him) Nylander, down the road.

We'll see how Xhekaj looks once the season starts but honestly he's a guy that shouldn't think his spot on the team is a sure thing. I think that if he doesn't quite iron out certain things once the real games happen, he should definitely be a candidate to send down.

When we look back in 3-5 years time and know who made it and who didn't, hopefully we batted 1/3 from the pool we have today with the ones we like or believe in their development.

Probably says we exit this in a good spot... if we stay patient. I have my doubts we stay patient in Montreal for that long.

I think there are many NHL'ers but the question is how many top of the line-up, middle, and bottom do we have? You're guess is as good as mine

He might be with the looming issue of trying to get under the cap with Price included. I've been playing around with armchair GM a few times and I think we have to go with 21 man roster with Price as 22. Even that is tough to fit in. It might end up being a 20 man roster with Price at 21.

* Players like Wideman, Pezzetta, Armia, Pearson are probably waived to Laval.

* Young players like Ylonen who are not exempt from waivers are likely staying with the Habs. Except for Primeau. I think we are going to waive him.

* So if you add it all up, players like Xhekaj, Barron, Mailloux (who are exempt from waivers) might go to Laval temporarily. Well some of them at least.

The tricky part to all of this is the players that end up on IR (Wideman and Dvorak for example). I'm not sure if you are even allowed to waive them if they are on IR and when on IR, they still take up cap hits.

I'm very curious to see Hughes navigate this

What’s a high end forward though? If he develops he stays. This d core needs points. Trade Harris and whoever for a high end forward

Keller for example.

There are 2 RD positions in the top 4, and Reinbacher will be taking one of them. The other one can be taken by Mailloux or even Engstrom.

Barron has less potential than Mailloux, and he should have a lot more value than Mailloux and Engstrom.

He makes the most sense to trade out of the 3.

Harris will still need to be traded even with Barron gone.

We can have this d-group in a couple of years:
Hutson - Reinbacher
Guhle - Mailloux
Xhekaj - Engstrom
Kovacevic

Add in Norlinder. I've liked his play this preseason. He can easily be where Engstrom is. In a year or two I think you are right. Harris and Barron are the odd men out.
