As Frustrating that Sammy can be on the ice he will always be pretty likable I think.

I'm not sure if I can watch some of this stuff, it's pretty emotional, I'm probably going to stick to seeing updates on Twitter

Thought they only cared about counting money and going to the cottage?

Ilya Samsonov EOS interview
  • On the last few days - very tough. Don't remember another time where he felt shit like now. Has spent time with family to help. It's very tough. You think a lot about what happened.
  • On coming out in the series - needs to play better. Needed to make better saves. First of all, he's a professional and needs to be playing better. It's not about how we defend or powerplay - says he needed to be better for the team.
  • On the Pastrnak goal - doesn't think about it. Says his decision to not go for poke check is the right decision.
  • On what he's learned this season - really interesting season. Has learned a lot about how you change mentality quickly. Says he was very negative start of the season, but saw how he came back with confidence. Upset about the playoffs. Feels very negative about not delivering more.
  • On free agency priorities - loves Toronto. Loves everyone on the team. You never know. Says he hasn't discussed with his agent what the future holds. If we get some more chances in Toronto, to wear this jersey, he will be very happy.
  • On importance of term on next deal - last 3 years, has worked on 1 year deals. It's not easy. You think about your future. You're still human, despite having high confidence. Would like more stability. Would be good for his family.

Sammy blew it, but I can't help but feel bad for the guy. He seems like a nice enough guy who just isn't cut out for this level. He did his best with what he has, unfortunately that's just not good enough, but seems like a good enough guy who loves Toronto.
Surprised at how difficult I found that to watch.

I wish him well. Hope he bounces back from this.

No, he didn't blow it. He let in one goal in 60 minutes in game 7 in Bruins barn. And that wasn't great enough? You all demand he get a shoutout or he's a bum. lol. He's fine. It's the POS Core Five.

You think they believe that's acceptable?
Normally I’d say no. But if you believe 1 time past the 1st round is right there, I seriously need to question what you mean.

Losing game 7 of the conference final twice in a row is more right there.

Losing is half of it, what you believe about losing, the reality of it is another. Leads me to believe they think what they are doing is fine, keep doing it or they are just unlucky. Have they been told this by management? Is that what they believe? Until that’s clarified, yeah, that comment gives me concern.

They are, and he doesn't mean in a pompous way; he really likes being a Leaf.

However, the performances both from him and collectively just aren't there and things need to change.
People worship gods, nobody is worshiping Mitch Marner I can promise you that. Guys entitlement runs very deep, even when he's not trying to actively be like that, it just subconsciously comes out.

I've never in my life heard a pro athlete say anything remotely close to the fans "look upon us like Gods"

To say some shit like that after he's been getting decimated by the entire fan base and city is an interesting choice lol. Maybe I'm just beyond sick of his shit but I thought that was extremely stupid and didn't like the choice of words one bit. Say they treat you like rockstars or something "gods" lol.

Likable guy, not the greatest goaltender. But he only allowed 1 goal in regulation in game 7, offence never helped him out.
Absolutely. And he didn't have to be the greatest goaltender. He just had to be within striking distance, and for our club's investment, that should be every single game

This isn't his fault in the least. We just suspend accountability when the contingencies fail to exceed our primary - constantly failing - weapons, because we're desperate to make sense of our puzzling situation.

Wish the best for him.

He played exactly like what he is, a 3M dollar goalie. If someone told us before the series started, that it's going to game 7 and Boston will only score 1 goal in regulation, we take that all day.

He had a couple bad games early, but game 7 isn't on him.

I present to you Option C, where Shanahan is gone and there is no president of hockey ops anymore, while Treliving is given the full set of keys.

I was reading through this thread and about to post asking if anyone knows of Tre has ever been president before. Why not make him both? We don't need our GM to be micromanage anymore. Or, since it seems shanny does a lot with alumni and the community and stuff, hire someone to do that and leave the hockey stuff to Tre. I haven't listened to 32 thoughts, got it queued up for my bike ride today. Just giving some of my thoughts.

I do feel for him. Just being parachuted into the last game is tough, and his mental health (if he's having bigger issues than just being down on himself) is quite important to keep on top of.

But clearly, he's not cut out for Toronto, and whoever recommended this signing beyond Dubas really needs to be looked at. Even re-signing him last year, which is on Tre, is an issue.

He was horrible in game 1 and he sunk the team with the Trent Frederic goal in game 3, and didn't do any favours in game 4 either. The whole team deserves blame, including him, but the team also played vastly different with him in net because they didn't really trust him.

Auston Matthews EOY Interview
  • On medical situation - got really sick after game 2. Played game 3 not feeling good, but in game 4 took a weird hit and couldn't go any longer. Doesn't want to provide any other details. Killed him to watch. Proud of the way they fought back. Tried to give it his all in game 7.
  • Refused to give anymore details on illness or injury
  • On lack of offense in the series - tough to generate offense this time of year. Teams playing extremely tight, not a lot of space. Says that special teams hurt them.
  • After frustration at another short run - always disappointing. Always want more. Sucks to be talking here when other teams are still playing. Wants to continue looking inward and getting better.
  • On the heat Mitch takes - in Auston's time here, there's always a scapegoat and a narrative. Always something. They love Mitchy. Great teammate and friend. We are all human beings. You take on a lot as players, and rightfully so. But when you see guys going through stuff like that, it's hard, you just try and support.
  • On expectations of changes moving forward - doesn't know. Not a question he can answer.
  • On the Coyotes leaving Utah (WTF WASTE OF A QUESTION) - Touched on it when it happened. Sad. Disappointing. Understands the NHL's viewpoint on it. They iwll be bringing back a team at some point.
  • On individual award nominations - it's always nice to be considered, but it's never fullfilling. Not what he's after. Wants to be the best teammate, leader on the team that he can be. Everyone here is after one goal. All the other stuff is nice, but not something that he's chasing or after or that makes him feel good. It's about winning. Frustrating.
