or they are basically just saying you are GM/President. a lot of GMs are Presidents.

Well, considering a lot of teams have taken up the model of president and GM partnerships I think that’s a step back in theory if we ever wanted to add to the brain trust. Like in Vegas, instead of McPhee and McCrimmon, you would have just one.

Keefe should be gone this week. I don’t think Pelly firing Shanahan without a viable blue chip superstar executive actually makes sense right now. The most politically prudent move would be to come in quietly like an evaluator and just take stock of the whole organization and project a steady hands kind of vibe. Use one year to start making big change.

Last thing you want is a panic hire with a mandate for change on a short timeline. If Shanahan is lame duck and not renewed, you can bring in the new president next year. The real victim here may be Treliving who could be caught up in the gears through no fault of his own.

Looking at recent champs

Vegas - McPhee president, McCrimmon GM
Tampa - Brisebois is the de facto GM/Pres etc
Colorado - Sakic was GM when they won, only switched to a Pres/GM model summer of '22
Blues - Doug Armstrong is President & GM

Other contending teams

Hurricanes - Waddell is president & GM
Panthers - Zito is President & GM
Stars - Brad Alberts CEO/President, Nill as GM
Oilers - Jeff Jackson CEO, Holland as GM

Seems like a mixed bag to me, and certainly doesn't seem like a President is necessary, especially if you have a big group of AGMs to support.

I can promise you if everyone’s coming back, then I’m not coming back………
I dont know if I can promise that but my level of apathy towards this team has grown leaps and bounds and another run it back scenario certainly would not help. Like many, when that ot goal went in, I felt nothing. Turned off the tv and did other stuff without much of a care. That is a long long way from how Ive felt in the past. Its all just so stale. Ive lost that loving feeling and its gone gone gone.

No president might mean more meddling owners (or ceo). Are we sure that's good news?
It can go either way. Could also be more autonomy for Treliving instead of having another layer to report into holding up decisions. If the reports are to be believed, Dubas had an issue with the reporting structure bogging down decisions, now maybe that was for the best since Dubas has proven to be a galaxy brain, but seems like there was a lot of red tape in the current structure as is. Shanahan also wanted to keep the core and tied Tre's hands into it.

I present to you Option C, where Shanahan is gone and there is no president of hockey ops anymore, while Treliving is given the full set of keys.

Remember, the previous CEO was not involved in the sports teams operations, so the president role made sense. The new CEO will be more involved, and therefore makes the president role redundant.

Isn’t this what Dubas wanted? That’s pretty funny.
Yes, and thank fck this is happening after he has left.
Don't know if Tre is the man either, but I'd accept a couple of years to find out.

Why would the new CEO be more involved?

I don’t have that strong a feeling about it. I don’t think it’s necessary like you outlined, but it would be a limitation not to have one.

And if that limitation is motivated by budget, well I’m not cheering for MLSE to make even more money… if that makes sense.

One thing that's interesting, some of these teams like Vegas or Colorado switched to a Pres/GM model after the GM was first given the reign to execute their vision onto the group. McPhee and Sakic both molded Vegas and Avs into what they envisioned stylistically and culturally, and then when that foundation was in place they switched to a hierarchical model. Perhaps that's where things go with Tre if he does it right

exactly. Add Raptors / Masai / Bobby to this. Because Shanny was never a GM, he let his GM's run in silos but also wanted to stick his beak in. Never a good recipe

Tavares EOS Interview:

  • On believing in the core - we are right there. Losing in game 7 OT shows how small the difference is. Lots of things could be alot different, just 1 shot away. The way we've competed and grown and embracing this time of year against defensive or physical teams, with whatever's required, the team has shown growth. Need to overcome hurdles. THat's on us, and on myself.
  • On extension - hasn't put much thought to it. Loves playing in Toronto. When I committed 6 years ago, saw tons of talent, and sees organization committed to winning.
  • On the heat on Mitch - Mitchy provides so much on and off the ice. His energy and personality makes him someone we love being around. Plays in all situations. Remarkable playmaker, reads plays really well. Very valuable piece of the group.
  • On how much growth he sees in Mitch - sees a lot of growth potential in everyone, himself included. Even in great years, always have to think about how to grow and get better. Have to keep getting better.
  • On how the time in Toronto has changed John, and biggest challenges playing here - been an amazing 6 years, and doesn't take captaincy for granted. Loves starting a family here. Has helped keep him grounded, and never takes being a Maple Leaf for granted. That has come with age.
  • On challenges - doesn't look at things as challenges, but amazing opportunities. Praises fans, and the belief they have in this team. Calls it an amazing opportunity. Overall, it's an incredible experience to play here as a Maple Leaf. When things are difficult, always have to reflect and look better, but have perspective on knowing that we are in a tremendous city and organization.

I'm personally not a fan of a CEO who has never worked in hockey to get involved with hockey operations. That's usually not a recipe for success.

Yeah even in the most charitable case where he gives the GM criteria for his continued employment vs firing (let’s say round 2 or deeper, fired if miss playoffs or 2 round 1 exits) but otherwise gives him full autonomy, that still sets up another string of JFJ/Burke/Nonis hirings where they force runs no matter what.

Hockey guy in the president role would be able to shelter a GM that said we need to take a step back for a year and retool a bit on the fly like Boston and several other contenders did.

“Right there”, yea that was ok 3-4 years ago.
