They're trying to find some 700k players with killer instinct to take over in the playoffs. Our entitled core will stack up points in the regular season. It's an amazing plan and great structure for a team.

LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL

That's something that I cannot explain. But that was 1 out of 63 games.

I think the players have a point that despite how awful the ending was, there are positives about how the team's regular went.

Regular season positives? Honestly, who gives a shit about regular season positives?

i have to say. this is why i couldn't work in professional sports in any aspect.
i would literally get myself fired today. lol
I remember when Bergevin said "the answer is in the room" when Montreal was struggling a little while back and it sounded completely idiotic at the time. Lots of jokes about it.

Now Toronto is looking for it's killer instinct. Oof. Hopefully they check under the couch cushions at Marner's place.

It's a possibility, but they've hunted at changes and cap concerns. They're covering their bases and leaving options open. Everyone should have expected this language and these type of statements
Yeah I don't know why people expected anything special at these press conferences. They're always going to be blanket statements to make sure they have multiple avenues to explore in the offseason. They can't just come up there and say "Yeah we're dealing one of Mitch or Willy we don't like them anymore", that immediately corners them and the media will pounce on it

Judge them by the offseason moves they make, not the press conferences. I don't know if Dubas has it in him to move a core piece though

So let's fast forward to next season.

I'm trying to envision a scenario in which I have any faith at all in the team if it comes back as is. Imagine these things happened?
  • Leafs set new franchise record for Wins! .... yeah but wait for the playoffs
  • Matthews wins the goal scoring title! .... yeah but wait for the playoffs
  • Leafs win the President's Trophy! .... yeah but wait for the playoffs
  • Marner wins the Art Ross! .... yeah but wait for the playoffs
  • Keefe finalist for Jack Adams Award! .... yeah but wait for the playoffs

I mean seriously, if the amazing happened and any one of those things happened... how could you react with anything but wait for the playoffs?

If that's the fan reaction... how in the hell could they start next season without a massive shake up?

They exist. Like Corey Perry.
yep, Spezza too. The problem is that the luckiest you can get is finding one or two of those players in a given offseason. Most are busts like Thornton or Simmonds. It's just not a viable strategy to keep changing the fringes of the roster every year for the next 5 years and having to continuously develop chemistry as players leave and keep hoping to get lucky

They'll never play a more meaningless season. They could go 82-0 never allowing a goal and it won't matter.

I'd even stretch that to playoffs and I can't imagine the pressure this team will face in any opportunity to clinch

Joe Thornton could have done that if he wasn't weighed down by his age and beard...:sarcasm:

If you're relying on a guy from the 4th line to win it for you at a crucial time, it's worrisome.

The guys making big bucks better have it or you're screwed.

The whole organization is at a dead end and their only hope is the Big 4 will take a jump.

Wasn’t that was Simmonds, Bogo, others were for, the killer instinct.

Some of those bottom end guys were really good but you’d need a lot of prime aged testosterone, pugnacity and truculence to average up whatever isn’t working with the current make up.

exactly. Next season we could have a 15 game win streak with 7 shutouts. But the question will be “what about in the playoffs?”

I'd argue that some of the depth could help provide a spark as well. Certain players just have it, and here's hoping a gut like Robertson, Anderson, etc.. do

Listen, I won't say to come out ala Brian Burke and spill your plan to the world, that's going to definitely not help.

But having to externally find a killer instinct when we're paying 40M for 4 forwards near league minimum wage is bad. You can't hope they'll find it. Saying it out loud makes your whole plan seem foolish.

Well that's where I'm at anyways, i couldn't care less about the triumphs of next season. Until we win round 1 it's all pointless.

We finished #1 in our division and got bounced by the worst team to make the playoffs. How can i trust them to do anything other than lose in the post season until they show me otherwise.

So i have to wait an entire year to see if they can do that. They've proven everything but the ability to win when it matters, and obviously, that's the only thing that matters.

So after a nice long summer the boys will comeback with “killer instinct” next season. I don’t know about you folks but I’m now convinced and will be pumped to watch.

lol yeah. any leeway the team has is gone now. like legit.

Shit take. Maybe actually watch a game or two.

Or seven.

but thank for your valid opinion. The player being severely hit in the second gif, never actually moves after this vicious hit. Meanwhile Nylander falls.

When on receiving end of hit, he put the puck out of play instead.. do you need a gif for that? Maybe watch a game first buddy.

yeah, the team has definitely been hurt by a lack of contributing players on ELCs. Hopefully that will make a difference for the team, but I really am reconsidering the salary structure being viable. It's not really Dubas' fault that the cap won't go up for many more years, but he might have to reconsider too

This team is not going to
Magically find killer instinct. You need to break up this regular season core. Marner is the worst of the four especially when it matters so he's got to go.
