Brining in the Emergencies Act was unnecessary. Everything required to break up the Covid protest in Ottawa was available to authorities without the Emergencies Act. The Pandora’s box is open now so I fully expect this to be used by future government’s to shut down organized dissent. Sad days for the country.

They could just allow any manifestation on foot, but disallow the ones involving vehicles. Why would you need vehicles to "voice your opinion/dissatisfaction"?

As soon as they came down with huge trucks, it should have been illegal and not permitted. I don't think they would have f***ed around like that in many other countries

I have a reasonable amount of faith in our Judiciary specifically and our democracy generally to police the use of this act.

Canada is like the Switzerland of Americas, hard to be smoother and more "free"

A lot was said about the War Measures Act that his father brought in during the FLQ crises, but it hasn't been used since. I think it's just war mongering, the police required these measures to be able to do there job & they seem to be doing it in the safest way possible. Remember some of those G20 protests where they used tear gas & were beating the crap out of protestors. Nice to see the police be more restrained for a change & the protestors for the most part surrender peacefully. No need for violence anywhere that can escalade & get out of hand & people get seriously hurt. :thumbu::thumbu:

On the CBC site, under "top" stories, there's probably nearing 200 articles. I'd guess 1/3rd of them relate to what's happening in Ottawa or related protests elsewhere

Nothing about what took place in BC.

I'm sure they have something, but you'd need to use the search function to find it

It came up ‘front page’ for me. Likely because I’m in bc.

A protest in Ottawa about Covid mandates seems within the scope of local and covid, if you can tie pipelines located in BC to Ottawa and the pandemic, be my guest.

I think it's also worth mentioning despite desperate attempts from the usual suspects on this board - no one was calling what happened in BC a 'legitimate protest'.

The whataboutism is staggering.

Once I read the article it was clear there was no equivalency.

The responses to the 2 incidents should be reversed though.

I see a sign saying "Love everyone and tell the truth"

I'm not trying to be sarcastic but I also don't really know what that person is trying to say

Does anybody have a clear idea?

If the government had confiscated the trucks, tractors, trailers, campers, etc., used to establish the blockade and occupation, there would be fewer such blockades and occupations in the future.

I think the city and province had powers they could use and I am unsure why they did not do so. However, I support invoking the Emergencies Act to get additional powers.

It's the same kind of empty nonsense they've been peddling from the start. Easy for a segment of society to claim "love" when it's within the same segment — they share views. But they've been awfully intolerant of differing views. And "the truth" is whatever they believe. And, of course, they think the exact same in the inverse.

The problem is there's always going to be some partial incompetence in these situations. I mean it's not like authorities are used to deal with these situations (covid, convoys, etc). Was this act necessary? Well, I don't know

What I do know is that the LIMITS should have have been STATED clearly before the truckers and anti-vaxxers arrived in Ottawa. People should have the right to manifest all they want but using vehicles should absolutely be forbidden. This blockade, constant noise, etc was not pacific at all. It's a pure aggression.

Is "the truth" more about, I dunno, 5 G towers or microchips or is it about something that holds the road a little bit more?

I'm sincerely trying to understand them a little bit more. Is all this about the same things that annoys me (wearing a mask, having to pull the QR code in many places, missing some of my hockey games, not going to the movies, etc) or is there MORE to it?

Played my first game since December this morning, felt good to see the boys and get the W

I agree that there will always be some screwups. Too may this time by the Ottawa Police, OPP, RCMP, etc. They let things go for far too long. They did far too little to address it.

Blocking streets is abnormal at all times so the protestors had to know that such actions would result in some kind of police action.

Spell checker screwup for "manifest"?

"pacific"?

Also, forgot to ask, when they use the word "LOVE"... is preventing a LOT of people from dying in misery and ALONE at the hospital not seen as "LOVE" too??? How exactly is what they are doing more an act of "LOVE"?

I think there should be room to have a reasonable debate around finding a balance between, restrictions, economic issues, mental health, etc.. but honestly no one seemed to be prepared to have an honest debate of these issue. Politicians used it as a wedge issue, media picked sides and ideologues ruled social media on all sides. It’s truly sad that it’s come to this in our world.

You’d also be hard-pressed to find a definition of love that includes putting children in harm’s way for self-preservation.

Yeah I know there was a lot of silly stuff "completely out of whack" but I'm trying to look at those signs that are less irrational right off the bat.

I mean I know what you're talking about, I just read this from Sep. 18, 2021

I believe the vaccine is the way that they’re going to purge Americans,” Adams said.

The vaccine is distributed worldwide but it'll only purge Americans? I mean, when you think you're the center of the universe I guess.

You’d also be hard-pressed to find a definition of love that includes putting children in harm’s way for self-preservation.

Oh man, you actually reminded me of this as I had it erased from my memory ASAP so I don't completely violently HATE these people. People who hurt children (and women) absolutely get the best of me. Using them as shields is not going to get my sympathy.

I hate that something that should have been purely "SCIENTIFIC" all the way became so politically polarizing. Of course when you have so many not understanding or "believing" (whatever that means) in science, it's going to become a MESS. Add those with deep insecurities issues who think it's all a plot, the situation is not all that surprising

Dunno if this was posted before but look at what they have done in Paris :

Paris police ban ‘freedom convoy’ COVID protest

Inspired by ongoing protests taking place in Canada against coronavirus vaccine and mask mandates, demonstrators who oppose COVID-19 measures taken by national governments and the EU are planning to occupy cities in their vehicles.

But Paris police are taking a hard line.

"Due to the risk of public order disturbances that this gathering could cause, the Prefect of Police is issuing an order prohibiting such demonstrations from Friday, February 11, 2022 to Monday, February 14, 2022 inclusive," the police statement reads.

Transgressors could risk up to two years in jail, a €4,500 fine, and the removal of the car and driver's license if they block roads. Organizers of the banned demonstration face up to six months in jail and a €7,500 fine.

Freedumb?

You can say it. The worst part is all these "people" ruin it for those who have legitimate points

Policy decisions need to be made for the “greater good” which requires looking at the impacts from as many perspectives as possible.
