News Article: Live Dubas presser

After the press conference, which Leaf pickups would make sense, if we had a wish list?

I won't speak about their contracts or who we would trade, but simply what would make sense to me for this team to become a bona fide Cup threat, top two or three in the league if we assumed Dubas could make it work.

For me, a grand slam would be a Foligno up front and Ekholm in the backend. Big asks and we obviously would need to shed salary. That is what I would view as very strong, "we are aiming for the Cup" moves. I'm also one who believes picking up captains adds more leadership, and every teams desires more leaders. He played a solid, smart series last year in the playoffs, a real team guy.

If we could pick up those pieces and keep Robertson, that would allow Leafs to have he and Galchenyuk available for the playoffs or if they feel they are needed/prepared at any point.

Who, we are both from Ontario, outside Power there is NOTHING ... trying to find some gem somewhere in Finland is next to impossible ... sure it may be possible but with no travel and no vision man i'd say it is finding a diamond in a haystack man

We would never ben in it for Power, or similar level guy anyway. But there are some interesting guys, that could help our depth, and system further down the order. But if we can meaningfully improve our chances this year, no problem.

You know that feeling you get when Fred goes into a need to win game. I get the same feeling with Dubas and the trade deadline.

Dubas was putting a lot of undue pressure on himself saying he needs to find a way to help his team. May be so, but as the big boss just hang back and play your cards cool and calm, close to the vest!

I thought the same to some degree, but It doesn't matter really. Some teams will be selling and they all know who the buyers are. It was more for the fans and players to say "we are serious and I am working hard to set us up for success". In the back of my mind I' also wondering if maybe teams aren't willing to sell.

I agree that maybe he plays coy, but then it's disingenuous when everyone know he needs to have playoff success. Every GM knows that the heat is always on in Toronto, so he's just emphasizing a point.

Also, if you are a GM and are selling and ask too much, you have to know Dubas will call another team and offer them a similar deal, so in some ways selling GM's realize "they are definitely buying, it's just a matter of from which team", and they have to make sure Dubas doesn't find another partner.

I am fairly sure it is already obvious to other teams.

I am also sure they probably know that if they ask for stupid prices, Dubas is likely not going to deal with them.

If we keep our first, we have a good shot at Cossa, who could be our goalie of the future. Or if we keep our 2nd, we could get Ben Gaudreau who also looks pretty good.

There are a lot of great prospects from Sweden in our range this year. Unlike last year, there are a bunch of nice defensive and center options available in the late 1st round this year.

Definitely not a bad idea to keep the pick if we are not getting a longer term goalie in return.

No hesitation he would trade a top prospect. Hard to see how that big return and moving out a prospect will fit into a cap structure that is in a straight jacket. But interesting.

Agreed

All deals will essentially need to be cap neutral balancing Out vs In, but I suppose you could add a top prospect or high pick and get the better player in return.

To me he's behaving like someone who knows he has job security. He can afford to take pressure from the locker room onto himself while they figure out whatever's going wrong internally. The opposite of how Babcock carried himself towards the end of his run.

The more the talking heads focus on Dubas and the deadline, the less they'll be writing hot take opinion pieces about whether or not Tavares should give up his kids for adoption since his game got worse after he had them.

A few years ago as a "favor" :) to the Blue Jackets we took Hortons uninsured contract, I wonder if there are opportunities out there where teams with not as deep pockets as we do, have LTIR contracts that are not insured and they are paying out of pocket, we can take those uninsured LTIR contracts off their hands plus a decent player and they keep some of that players salary for one of our less talented prospects..

dubas gets bent over on every deal. now he comes out openly and tells everyone we will be willing to deal a top prospect....

this is gonna get ugly
Wrong.
Hyman trade, Muzzin trade, Campbell trade, Kapanen trade. Those were excellent trades.
That won't stop the narrative though.
