News Article: Live Dubas presser

  • Xenforo Cloud has upgraded us to version 2.3.6. Please report any issues you experience.
I seriously hope Dubas was being coy regarding the goaltending situation to avoid sounding desperate.

The truth is we have 2 goaltenders that aren't healthy and Hutchinson. That is not a stable situation whatsoever heading into the playoffs.

It should be our number one priority without question.

Not a fan of him defending Freddy but guess he can’t really just come out and say he sucks
Freddy could literally let in a 200 foot goal every game, and any GM's response would be the same.
Dubas is still taking a massive risk if he goes with Freddy, but as @zeke mentioned, Dubas saying tandem is a good sign.

Its the Muzzin deal. A price worth paying imo. Then flip Rielly to someone else for a top forward. Extend Ekholm long term in the summer.

Ekholm Brodie
Muzzin Holl
-------- Bogo

I would be less interested in trading Reilly and more interested in moving on from Muz. Not a popular opinion I'm sure, but he has a NTC this summer and may have more of a market since he has term left.

There’s definitely something a bit scary when moving a top prospect for a rental.

I would imagine that definition includes:

Robertson
Sandin
Amirov
Liljegren

I honestly don’t want to move any of them. Amirov might be the least painful short term. Robertson the most painful. I don’t think Robertson will be moved as he could be impactful right now.

I’d be worried about selling low on Liljegren. He could step into the NHL right now.

There are no rentals worth moving any of those four prospects for imo. Perhaps Dubas considers Hallander or Der-Arguchintsev a top prospect? Despite what he says I don't see him trading a Robertson or Sandin for a guy who is walking in a few months.

With the depth that was added to our prospect pool over the last 6 months (Hallander + 12 draft picks), I'd rather use depth over top quality if possible for the other team involved.

Essentially would rather package two B prospects (ex: Hirvonen + Abramov) than trade one of the big 4. I think the big 4 are critical going forward and three of them already have NHL experience. I don't mind hurting the depth if it means quality over quantity.

Yep, figured this would be the year Dubas would be ok with a rental. I’m none too keen however on trading a top prospect for one. A 1st round pick is the maximum asset I’d pay in a package for a rental. Our top four prospects I’d only be interested in moving for guys with some years left on their deals.

This has the full video of the presser, if anyone missed it, wants to watch it again.

Maple Leafs' Kyle Dubas on Trade Deadline: Rare Time Where Probably a Rental is a Better Fit

Thx very much for this. Dubas always strikes me as a decent human being. His praise of players and staff is one of his strengths. Anything else that needs to be said - do it in private - a quality I like. Even his words about Freddy were, while cautious, positive in nature. I think he's a person people will want to work for.

Seriously. If this team had a strong goalie and not Andersen they might not even need any other upgrades to be a serious cup contender.

Pretty standard to hear right from Dubas on all things Leafs. It's just past halfway point.

While it'll be nice if he can pick someone up, the issues on this team are all here atm. They ain't going nowhere until they get Simmonds back, goaltending gets figured out +(PK), their stars get back to playing 200 ft., and the coach starts mixing things up instead of staying with the same static lineup when things dont go well.

It's been a bad 5 of 6 games, but a lot of issues you're seeing in this stretch were visible when they were winning (before Oil), they were just finding ways to outscore.

I can definitely say I've soured on Sheldon Keefe a bit. Really thought he was a different coach, but he shows us time and time again he has those little similarities and biases like Babcock.

Hopefully the team, and Keefe come back on Friday better prepared to coach and win games.

Yeah I agree on Muzzin. Rielly is going to be Rielly for the next 3-5 years but Muzzin could be facing a swift and brutal decline for all we know. So much mileage on him.

I mean, this is a completely ridiculous statement on my part... but you take a guy like Eichel for example. If he's put on LTIR... let's imagine he's out until the first playoff game... well the cap doesn't count in the playoffs, so if we loaded up with players out until game one of the playoffs, we could stack the team. Would it ever happen, of course not, but it's a theoretical possibility.

They did in Chicago with Kane a few years ago.

Agreed. There were some issues in the Calgary series. Rittich dominating Toronto in the 2 games looked like a foreshadowing of the Demko and Hellebuyck show down and when Toronto had to open up the floodgates to get the scoring flowing again it caused some leaks. Before we were out scoring our problems and probably were as good as we were lucky vs Edmonton but they need to come back recharged and refocused. Still I’m thinking they’re a group with a very high ceiling and still a very low floor.

Dubas with the presser saying he'd move top prospects timed with his boy writing a piece to justify moving top prospects probably means Dubie is about to make a deal and wants to get in front of the possible blowback for overpaying for what he's trying to bring in .

I would much rather just trade our first rounder than any of our top 4 prospects. Sandin and Liljegren should be locked into our bottom pairing next year and Robertson has way too much upside to move so soon. Package Dermott with the first and you should be able to get something nice.

That something nice better be a top 4 dman or else Marincin replaces Dermott. Be great if Kyle can acquire grab Ekholm and a top 6 forward with lots of jam.

I just cannot imagine any one of our big 4 prospects being included on a rental deal TBH. It would be a massive overpayment, and they are essential to keep our window open for the 3 years after this seasons end. If there is a "top prospect" I could see them move on from it might be Topi Neimela. By the time he is ripe for NHL action, this core of Matthews/Marner/JT/Willy will be nearing expiry on their current deals. Sure his ELC may come in handy then, but Lilly is NHL ready ATM and projects to be a very big part of our future. Possibly even our top pair RHD one day. Sandy also appears ready. those 2 could realistically be our top pair in 3-4 years time, so even though Topi would be great to have, he is less of a need potentially. Out of our top 5 prospects, Topi has the least projectable impact on our roster the next 4 years. Whish is what I consider to be our contending window. I'd personally consider Topi, the reigning WJC best defensemen a top prospect. I am sure the rest of the league would as well. But if we look at needing to win a cup in this next 4 years, he has the least likelihood of helping us in that time period. Would be sad to see him go, but if it brought in someone that helps us win this year, it could be worth the risk

I don't know if Dubas has anything cooking right now but my hunch - caveat: my hunch is seldom right - is that he moves Robertson + 1st for an impact forward. Don't know who, but a rental and the type of player Torts would love to have ... or, not speculating, hate to give up.
