Though the Senators were hoping to have a contract extension in place before making the deal, that wasn’t the case and there have been no formal talks with Ullmark’s Sweden-based agent Joakim Persson.

The belief is the attention will turn to those talks in the coming days, and if it happens it will likely be north of $6 million per season. Ullmark had to wave his no-trade clause to come here, but is excited about the challenge of suiting up for the Senators.

I, just don’t understand how Korpisalo is a part of the deal.

That’s absolutely bonkers.

If you’d have told me we could give up the Boston 1st to be rid of Korp’s contract, I’d have thought long and hard.

Paying 4 million of his deal over 4 years isn’t a big deal for us, all things considered.

Looks like the impossible happened, Staois was able to get rid of Korpisalo & at the same time acquire Ullmark & they still have Chychrun to move, not bad, not bad at all. They got their #1 priority a goalie & still have another chip to make another big deal & fill a need. July 1 Free Agency should be very interesting too.

It will also be interesting as to who replaces Kastelic on the 4th line C spot? I expect Ostapchuk or maybe Halliday which would be intertesting. Is it possible that we could see Ostapchuk, Halliday & Kleven in Ott next yr?

If they dont sign him and we suck, trade him to recoup that late 1st at the deadline.

We cant lose this trade. If he walks we still win.

If he walks we dont have a goalie, we have no first in 2026, we lost a first this season and are still retaining on Korpisalo for 4 years.

We could recoup assets at the deadline but that depends if we are pushing for a playoff spot - in which case we likely keep him I imagine.

Then we would need to acquire another goalie next season. Either overpaying again on the UFA market or trading assets to get a good goalie.

If Ullmark doesn't sign I wouldn't call this a win. If he signs I think it's a pretty good deal.

Good trade, but really want to know if there is at least a hand shake agreement on an extension already in place or not. Top marks for getting rid of Korpisalo though, didn't think that would be possible especially with the Bruins.

For Ullmark I don’t understand how he waives to come here but doesn’t sign long-term? Seems risky bad play or injury and you lose out on the mega contract.

For Ottawa you need to sign the vezina winner and must pay him accordingly so you don’t end up giving up more assets for likely a lesser goalie in just one years time seems like a headache that isn’t necessary.

Both Ottawa and Ullmark need each other IMO.

nope. it's a win, regardless. The 25 and kastelic would roughly have been the cost to move korpi.

And that 25 statistically is extremely unlikely to turn into a high end player.

Worst case we get one of the best goalies in the league for a year, basically for free.

I agree, IMO this is a weak draft year too. That Korpi contract had to go. After this year we may not have any money tied up to goaltending with Ullmark and Forsberg both gone. Will be interesting to see what develops after this season.

I do not expect him to sign here, he'll have way better options elsewhere, money-wise and winning-wise.

Not a bad move considering how much of a bad spot we are in, but I doubt it will help avoid the inevitable: we are going to need a rebuild after the crater Dorion left us in.

This!!!

Great management move. I don't think the Sens fleeced Boston. No goalie would ever be worth that 7th pick. Good job for not incl Chick. He will be a nice piece if he is moved.

Love how they subtracted a foolish contract for Korpi, subtracted a flyby specialist centre who is a monster Kastelic but with no meanstreak. For a 25th pick which became ours the Cat trade.

Excellent work and still many options and chips to play with at the draft and free agency.

Yeah, it may be a negotiation tactic, I fully expect us to try and get him to sign now, but there is risk
There's risk to him not signing with Ottawa for sure, but Ottawa is only on the hook for 1M / year for the Korpisalo deal, instead of 4 more years at 4M. Regardless of whether he signs or not, that is big savings no matter what. If he does not sign the Sens can shop for a free agent goalie or trade for one that is priced at near what they would be wiling to pay Ullmark.

Can't ignore that there is lots of risk for Ullmark too if he does not immediately sign a contract. He could very likely lock in 5 years near 7. Consider what might happen to that market value a year out if he doesn't play well. What if (A) he plays poorly or (B) the Sens new and improved defence and coaching does benefit him in that regard? Remember, he lost his #1 position, no matter how good he was. He could see his market value driven way down below the value he could get right now. It's the old strike while the iron is hot scenario for him. I agree with the observation that both parties very much need each other right now.

I'm happy as a pig in poop with this deal right now. Amazing!

That’s only going to happen if he has a really good season with us, which would probably result in a playoff spot. If his play drastically gets Sens’d he’s not getting a big payday next year. Like a couple others mentioned, he’s probably angling for a bigger contract with Ottawa than they’re currently offering.

No, we need work in places, but unless players start asking out, why are you rebuilding?

We just dropped $3M of dead cap on a division rival. That's $3M less they can put on the ice against us these next 4 years.

I still think it's fair to question our core. It's not really deep when you compare and project our guys vs what Cup winners have.

Stutzle-Tkachuk-Sanderson is a hell of a start, but we should have added 2-3 pieces to that (Hopefully this draft is one of those pieces)

I think the current situation is salvagable, but it'll require shred trades and effective FA signings. This trade is a good start.
