2022 Cup to Calgary
Here is Ferland's 2015-16 and 2016-17 highlights. In the 2015-16 he was the single most snakebitten player in the NHL, getting robbed by goalies left and right, but you can already see the backchecking, takeaway ability, vision, passing, speed, dynamicism, and how dangerous the shot was going to become. My favorite plays are that little assist to Bennett in Arizona as well as him getting robbed by Jonathan Quick in what is a goal in every other timeline:

The bounces stated to go his way the next season, but he was buried on the fourth line for most of it with non-NHLers like Freddie Hamilton and Lance Bouma. He carried that line however, and it was the best fourth line in the NHL IMO while he was stuck on it.

Finally, in a game in Nashville with the team's playoff hopes desperately hanging in the balance, the seeds of his 2017-18 season were planted:

Enjoy.

And yes, Oliver Ekman-Larsson must be the happiest person in the world about this trade.

Man reading through the last few pages, it definitely seems like some are trying to convince themselves and others to still be pissed at this franchise. You'll have to excuse me, but f*** that I'm tired of being perpetually pessimistic about the future and direction of this team. I'm ready to turn the page and look forward to the future of this team. I'm ready to look for any excuse to make this team fun again.

Yep. I think it's time to take a break from this team if you can't find any positives in what's happening here. That's just rediculous.

When I first saw that Hanifin was part of the trade I was going to want to kick Waddell in the shins if the return was low. Then I saw the return, did a little research, and well I must say I like it.

As I've stated, Lindholm has been an overall disappointment even going back to when we drafted him. It got worse when the guy picked after him, Monahan, started looking a better pick in year 1. Lindholm was like a roller coaster, when we needed him to show up and take that next step he never did. He was probably closer to being labeled as one of the biggest busts than we might realize, he absolutely sucked in year 3. In some ways, I kind of feel like he is a perfect epitome of why this team has such a long playoff drought. 5th overall, but played more like a depth guy, just not good enough. Also was soft, like the team itself.

Hanifin from what it sounds like is happy to be in a "hockey market" which to me indicate that he wanted out to begin with. Will miss watching him develop but won't miss the head scratching decisions that he was prone to make. And like Lindholm, I thought he got pushed around a lot.

This franchise needed a trade of this magnitude to happen. Perfect timing too with our new #2 pick. We got excellent value back for it. We also got a little meaner in the process.

Not notably close to the copy machine

BTW I asked around at “Shoot for your tickets” event today and it seems pretty certain that Adam Fox is on board for next week. The team is really excited about him. Heady defenseman.

It starts to look like Canes did a FU trade for the rest of the league and took their already crazy blueline and set out to max the INT stat just because they can.

Good one, Iceness.

I'm really excited
- Svech is big thing, Necas is top 5 prospect in the world, we keep Aho and Slavin, Ferland and Martinook brings a lot of energy and grit... and Dougie Hamilton is borderline top 15 dman in the world and our first true PPQB since when? It's not the greatest steal ever but man we just acquire crazy good young dman, toughness and legit prospect.

Might have to watch some games of you guys. Really want to see how Ferland and Hamilton do on their new team, as well as seeing Svechnikov play.

Ferland is perfect, he can play both sides of the wing. I see him on your 2nd or 3rd line. He'll stand up for his new teammates.

Hamilton with Slavin might be one of the best duos in the league within a year or two. I think Slavin is close to Giordano's level and is only going to surpass him shortly.

And if you can sign Fox, good hell you'll remain to have a solid D-core.

They really need to hit a home run on the next trade. I want to keep skinner but it seems like they're dead set on moving him. Need to trade Faulk for a center. After staal we've got guys with question marks, and if we get injuries there's no way we could cope.

Them pessimists better watch out. If they don’t buy into the culture change Waddell will have them shipped out ASAP.

I'd still be shopping for ROR. If you can manage to ship Faulk and maybe a really good prospect and 2nd round pick to them, I think they'd bite on that.

A top nine of Aho - ROR - Williams, Teravainen - Staal - Svechnikov and McGinn - Rask - Ferland would be sick. Or split up the big bodied players in Ferland and McGinn on separate lines and also keep the Fins together.

If you cannot get ROR, I think Faulk for Nugent-Hopkins wouldn't be terrible either.

Nugent-Hopkins, given the Oilers abysmal offensive depth, is likely not on the table. I'd be comfortable adding something good to Faulk for O'Reilly, but he's not a good stylistic fit next to Dahlin and Ristolainen in that Top 4.

I'm keeping an eye on Tyler Johnson. His name hasn't been rumored too much up to this point, but the Bolts have some long-term cap issues and Johnson has a NTC kick in on July 1st. Faulk would add some additional offensive punch to the Tampa blueline, give some flexibility in 19-20 if McDonagh and/or Stralman look for too much on their next contracts and expire in time for the Sergachev/Vasilevskiy extensions. Johnson has settled into a 45-50 point caliber player, but does come with 6 years of team control (age 28-33) at a reasonable $5 mil cap hit.

Would love to have either deal. I don't see Buffalo being interested in Faulk, or Edmonton since they selected Bouchard.

If I had to guess. Most likely destinations would be Chicago or Toronto. I wonder if we could get Duchene from Ottawa if they can't sign him.

Oddly enough this does put us in the market for a 2nd/3rd pairing LHD, something I hadn’t been paying attention to at all until now.

Hickey would be a nice pickup depending on his number. If we want to go veteran (to usher in the Bean era), Enstrom might be available and I think (but too lazy to check) that the advanced stats still consider him an effective player in a more limited role. Not sure if Dallas plans to re-sign Hamhuis, but if he’s willing to play on a 1-year deal he’d be a nice sign as well.

I’m not sure what the full plan is, since the potential Skinner and Faulk trades add so many unknown variables, but I wouldn’t be surprised if a Hainsey-like stopgap is used on the left side.

Enstrom would be a good cheap, veteran add. Waddell and Dudley know him well.

2 thoughts / questions

1. How different is Hamilton as a player compared to Faulk pre Brad Malone injury? They honestly seem like very similar players, Faulk has just fallen off since that injury.

2. Though they play opposite sides, who has the higher ceiling Bean or Fox?

Bean, but Fox is a safer bet.

Bean has the skating to become a top 4 dman and PP QB.
Fox I see as a specialist in the league because his skating will keep him from playing up in the lineup, but he could be an excellent #5/PP QB in his own right.

Anyway, just an idea I was spitballing at the "Shoot for your seats" event (I... made an excellent zone clearance ) as much as it would likely be too much too soon, possibly think of throwing Necas with Aho and TT, and then go with a full on bulls in a china shop line of Ferland-Staal-Svechnikov as our 2nd group. Whoever-Rask-Williams as our 3rd line.
