if the only difference is the line combos than no big deal but its still to be seen how the ice time is divided up at even strength (looks like Lias will be a key PKer)...i'd expect the top line to get big minutes, 2nd line will get their minutes...does that leave enough minutes for the 3rd and 4th lines to get more than 10 minutes each? my concern is the 4th line will get well below 10 minutes which is a problem regardless of if the 4c is lias or howden.

The second line center spot is going to be interesting to watch. Does Chytil come back with a chip on his shoulder? Does Andersson bring what he brought in the preseason? You have less exciting options like Strome in the mix, but he’s in that mix nonetheless.

I’m perfectly willing to hold Quinn accountable and disagree with him. I just have to see what he does first. It’s hard to for me to have hypothetical disagreements at this stage. Like any coach, I’m sure he’ll have his share of things that drive me guano loco.

yeah definitely not getting on him before things happen, just saying thats something i'm concerned/watching for. regardless of the coach, when you factor in special teams, its not easy to divide up the minutes to make sure 4 lines of kids get their proper minutes to develop.

Uh, HFNYR, do we need to worry for Lias’s safety?
It might be a good thing. If Lias can deal with this dude staring at him every gameday, he won't be intimidated by anyone in the NHL:

The PK time will help boost his TOI this season. Hopefully he can flourish in that role and lead to better things for him, along with more confidence.

With the bottom 3 lines in flux for the most part, I'd expect there are a few games that he's elevated based on play and will get his shot with a Kakko or Kreider.

Lots of pressure on him to be good, not great, this season. a 30 point season would be a good result. Anything more means he broke out.

35 points while taking a major pk role would set him up pretty nice

Per Cyrgalis, Smith will be the 4th line winger opening night. How long before Quinn pulls Lemieux out of the lineup for some minor mistake, and staples Haley to Lias' other wing as well?

Has Quinn sat anyone yet who hasn't deserved to be sat? He's definitely had too long a leash with some guys but I've yet to see anyone being sat for no reason at all

Exactly this. I was annoyed with him not sitting Howden, and not sitting Pionk more, but I didn't have issue with him benching other guys. Looked/sounded like it was all deserved.

It's not so much players being taken out of the line-up for no reason. It's more the lack of consistency. Nobody will disagree with Lias, DeAngelo, Buchnevich or Chytil missing some games because in all 4 cases, it has had the desired effect. The problem is that Howden seems to be exempt from any consequences. Howden hasn't played a good game since November, long before he was out with a concussion, yet he seems to be guaranteed a spot in the line-up. Howden only playing 2 pre-season games and making the team suggests he was a lock from the start and his place on the team was never in jeopardy, which in itself is ridiculous.

When AV did this 3 years ago, playing Vesey despite not earning the minutes, everyone had a problem with it. Now Quinn does the same with Howden and nobody seems to have a problem with it.

Literally half the board has a problem with it lol

Not to the same degree though. People were talking about AV as if he was clueless and never did anything right. It was way over the top
Eh you're talking to the anti av leader here so I'm gonna back away right now before I get triggered.

I'll just say I can see why howden is playing...I don't agree with it, but I can see why. He's got tools to be a damn good player and he plays a pretty "honest" type game which coaches love. Hell even in beer league we love guys who skate hard, get to the dirty areas of the ice and have upside.

Let's also note that in all likelihood howden is a 4th line center, which to me makes sense.. but likewise I'm actually a fan of howden so again, I'm gonna back away slowly.

All I can say is good riddance to AV and I am very happy that Vesey is in Buffalo. He deserves that place the way he's played with the Rangers.

Would love for Howden to succeed, but I haven't seen him do anything that says he should stay. Hopefully we're all wrong and he has a good season.

I am all for Howden having a good season. But 3rd line minutes need to be earned and at this point, I feel Howden is held to a different standard than Chytil and Lias.

In fairness, Chytil has received quite a bit of top-six chances and did little after January 19th of last season. If anything I feel like he gets a little bit of a pass on here for his 2 goal, 4 point performance over the last 32 combined regular season and preseason game stretch.

True, but out of the 3, Howden has miraculously survived all season without facing the consequences for his poor performance. I have no problem with Chytil starting in the AHL. I just feel Howden should be down there as well.

Funny thing is I don't have a problem with him starting the year in the NHL again. I think he was middle of the pack in terms of our forwards this preseason. Again not amazing, but not a guy who was outperformed by a list of guys who should be on the team ahead of him.

Now, having said that, if he slumps again like he did last season, I hope to Vishnu they send the kid down to Hartford.

You have to remember that Quinn sitting people was not just about how many points players were or were not putting up. He constantly mention certain non-negotiables and intentions.

I think Howden's "hot start" last season bought him an impressively long leash. At least he did look a bit better after returning to the lineup at the end of last season?

I don't know how many of you guys play hockey or not (don't worry, I am not using that as a gauge of your knowledge)......

If you have, did you ever see a new guy or any guy for that matter and think man he looks like a player and then he gets on the ice and has no clue? That's Howden, he looks and acts like a player but in games he just disappears. That can be from a variety of factors, be it inexperience, youth, confidence, strength/conditioning, or just outright not being up to snuff be it hockey sense or ultimately skill. If it's the first few then he will be ok over time. Lias is the opposite of a guy like Howden, he's not head turner talent wise but he goes and does all the little things a player is supposed to do and the sum total is bigger than the parts. if that makes any sense.

Anyway, I don't think Lias will have a big year at all, what he will have is a year where he turns the corner and starts growing into an NHL player. I think he transitions from a player that was in way over his head to a guy that will be an important piece going forward. However, he's still on the beginning part of that journey. Sorry for all the cliches .......

Even on Corsi (+12.5% rel), 61% Fenwick (+24.7% rel), even on SOG (+10.61% rel), 48.98% xGF% (2nd on the team, +12% rel) at All Strengths, including on the PK.

8:33 TOI, lowest on the team by almost 30 seconds. Because...REASONS.

(in the event that he's hurt, I'm pissed off at whatever caused it, not Quinn. If he's not though...)
