He's developed nicely this offseason, which is major and I don't see any issue.

I don't get how anyone want to write him off, at all. I'm 100% certain there is a good spot middle-6 and lots of PK-time for him down the road.
He's probably our best defensive forward (prospect) and as such super valuable. Where he was picked is irrelevant.
If we can turn him into a Kris Draper kinda guy, that grindy, little two-way 3rdC, we have one important position locked down for a run.

Over the rebuild, I've seen couple new players, do things I rarely saw any of our players do, in the many years before.
One of them is Lias being an interceptor. He reads so many plays so well and he did that as a teenager in the NHL.
If his physical development progresses further, he will be a core piece of the team.

He's not even that small either. Per the Rangers website, he's 6'1", 190lbs

I'm seeing Andersson, who, in his 3rd year since being drafted and at the ripe old age of 20 years old, has taken a very large step in his development this past off-season. To put it in perspective, he would be a Junior in college this year. Adam Fox played his Junior year last year at Harvard. How many points do we think Andersson would have this year if he played at Harvard?

Andersson starts what equates to the first NHL season of Couture, Giroux, Barzal and Scheifele among others

if hey ever put together a line of Kreider Kravtsov and Kakko just call it 6K

anderssons clock is ticking.

we have plenty of 3/4C options currently and another draft year in 2020.

he needs to make his move this year and establish himself as a key building block for this young rebuilding team. being the defacto 4C isnt really a good bar to set. he needs to be better than that.

he and howden are head to head on this 3C thing.

at some point he will be trade fodder unless he can start producing.

this is ridiculous he isn't even 21 years old yet and the clock is ticking. GTFO.

I'm still hoping for high end all around 2C from Lias. Like Stepan.

That isn't out of the question. I will just keep saying it but Lias played AHL/NHL hockey when guys like Scheifele, Couture, Barzal, Giroux and others were sent back to juniors. I am not saying he will be as good as these players but if any of those players were good enough to play in the NHL at age 18 or 19 they would have. It's just too early to determine what he will be

Were those guys eligible to play in the AHL at the same age as Andersson?

So far he is playing like a top 3 C this camp. And who are all of these options you are referring to?

That seems a bit hyperbolic. What because he slimmed down a bit and looks solid in Training Camp/Pre-season? This year is gonna be very telling for Andersson. I'm definitely not writing him off but 6 points last year in half a season is a huge red flag that this guy might not ever produce at a top-6 level.

It’s not a huge red flag when you look at what most D+2 players do in the NHL (if they’re even there to begin with)

What about games played threshold, like if you look at players who played 30-40+ games? Andersson has gotta be toward the bottom of that list.

His AHL number are also not great, solid but not what you expect from a top-1o pick.

If Lias long term becomes a 4C he is useless. Can sign one in FA for slightly above league minimum.

and for that to happen he would have to never improve or possibly even regress since he could be the 3C right now if we wanted to put him in that role.

My point is that, not unlike Lias, these guys weren't good enough to play in the NHL at age 18 or 19. It's not about playing in the AHL

1) When Giroux, Couture and even Schifele were prospects, organizations typically let prospects marinade more. The game was different back then, goons still existed and kids were't given the 'keys' like they are now.

2) For the players who did play significant time in the NHL at Andersson's stage, the comparables are not good at all. That's the point SA16 was making.

Why would the games played threshold make more sense than using comparably aged seasons?

And maybe the problem is your expectations for top-10 picks is off from the reality of top-10 picks

He's been good in the preseason. I would like to see him start as the 3C. But I certainly would not say he "could be the 3C right now" for sure. He should be given the chance, definitely, but nothing he has done in the NHL so far has shown that.

North America vs Europe is very different there. Those guys could not play in the AHL. A large reason Andersson has more time than them so far is because the team had the ability to call him up/send him down. For the other players mentioned the options are burn a year of the contract even if they may not be ready to have a big role or send them to junior for almost the whole year. If Lias Andersson was Canadian he would not have as much NHL experience as he does so far. He'd be playing junior somewhere just like most of the Canadian picks.
