I think Lias will surprise a lot of people next year. He played a very limited defensive role when he was up in the NHL but he has some interesting tools and I really liked him in his draft year. I’ve said this before but slower/weaker skaters take a longer time to get going in the league, even if that seems obvious it’s usually true with guys like Timo Meier and Colin White who both were in the same position as Lias at one point. Both play very similar games to Lias as well. I think he’d succeed as Kreider’s successor in the net front position which is why I really want to see him and Zib on the same line, they’re close friends as well. Check out some highlights of his WJC

He excels around the net and when he plays with a playmaker. Another good comparable to Lias may be Joe Pavelski as well. Just very high IQ, hard working players. I also said in his draft year that I think his defense will become Selke-caliber one day, and I think that area of his game has gone unnoticed. I was impressed by him on the PK as well.
As do I. It's time to throw this kid in the deep end IMO.

when the season starts Lias will be 21. Not a baby anymore. He's been disappointing, no other way to spin. Doesn't mean he can't develop into a good player still. He might need more time. Luckily with all the guys we've drafted since, we don't really have to hang all our hopes on him. But if he does end up a bust? Oh well. Nobody goes 100% on their picks, even 1st rounders.

With regards,
Patrik Stefan

I rememebr at 1 point last year the 2 of them talked about how lias' wasn't really moving his feet..it wasn't that he was slow it's that he was standing around a lot..and how instead of actively getting players he was constantly pointing at players other guys should get.

He sure looks slow to me.

as much as we all want him to develop into that energy, high motor/compete level 2 way 3 zone guy, and no reason he cant, so far - and i mean that in the nicest of ways, he hasn't shown much of that stuff really. hes just been rather blah.

no one wants him to fail, but watching him so far, and i mean also while he was in hartford, he showed me little. that could be a product of the tire fire that was hartford, ill buy that.

this is an important year for him.

his role is still unknown. is he a center or wing ? can he carry a line. is he a high energy skill guy without first step foot speed or is he a plumber who works the dirty areas ?

no one is saying he is a bust. i was a big fan on draft day. still am. expectations have been tempered.

im just saying so far, based upon his limited body of work, hes trending that way..... still lots of time.

High compete level, good skill set, average skating is his only knock and like Boyle and Hayes he can work on that. I've said it before but Lias is a gritty type forward who needs to fill out to play that way in the nhl, hes just a kid still, needs his man strength. I think we will be pleasantly surprised in a year or two.

If you're disappointed with Lias BEING in the NHL and his performance at this level in his D+2 year - it's on YOU.

If you didn't see a progress at the end of the season as compared to the beginning in Lias' D+2 - again it's on YOU.

One needs to match expectations based on prospects' age. At 20 - just being in the NHL is an accomplishment based on how few teenagers - 20-year old's are at that level at all.

Prospects progress should be measured at a very "micro" level - did he move a play along, did he turn a 50/50 into clear possession or vise versa; did he throw a timely check, was his stick in the right position to force a worse play by opponent, etc. Not everyone on this board is able to focus on these details. Then there are some who are able but are willingly choose not to (or not acknowledge).

He is 14 months older than K'Andre Miller. How many NHL games will Miller have played in by the time he's Lias' age?

At 21 big Kevin Hayes was still well under a PPG in the NCAA
Fast forward six years and the dude just signed for 7x7

Kid will be a stud. Yall just need to give him some time.
Expecting around 30 points next season.

He’s gonna get a look ... Chytil and Howden too ... I don’t love one of the kids as 4th line C but that means Andersson or Chytil hit the wing cause Quinn loves Howden imo

Considering the incredibly long leash Howden had last season, this is definitely true

Still open minded about his future.

For me, I find it hard to shake the draft day comments and expectations that he was NHL ready when selected and was barely NHL ready to end the season almost 2 years later.

I still think hes going to be a player, but my personal opinion is that it's as a 3rd liner which based on draft position I think is a little disappointing.

Not the end of the world as all teams need 3rd liners, but I was hoping/expecting better

The problem for me is I don't see the tools to justify his draft spot. Chytil was disappointing last year but you can see the tools and the potential. I don't see that with Lias.

At 19 years old, what was disappointing about Chytil's season?

In the NHL last season Lias’ playing level was barely enough: not fast enough to read and make plays or get where these plays would happen.

However, if Lias was playing last season at this level in juniors or still overseas you’d see someone with more than enough speed, physically dominant (or at least above average), making smart plays and having good hands to score or set up his teammates.

This competition level difference is why you don’t see it.
