Yeah, Lias's deployment wasn't perfect, but if he was that good of a prospect, he wouldn't have needed it to be.

Do you — and did he and his camp — not think that general manager Jeff Gorton has been seeking a deal for Andersson since his Nov. 17 assignment to Hartford? Do you think Andersson’s trade value, at a low ebb anyway, was helped over his last 10 AHL games in which he recorded only three points, with the two goals and one assist coming in the same game on Dec. 7?
What do you think the market is for a player who lacks speed and explosiveness, is not particularly creative with the puck, and who walked out on his organization a day after the Dec. 19-27 NHL holiday trade moratorium kicked in?

Brooksie in his article which is pretty much right on point brings up some "glorious" 1st round picks of ours in the past 20 years such as in 1999 at #4 Pavel Brendl and at #9 Jamie Lundmark(how do we **** up not just one but two top 10 picks? Oh yeah...Sather was running the show than...lol)....2003..Hugh Jessman at #12...2004...Al Montoya at #6 and of course in 2010 with the 10th overall Dylan McIlrath.

I'm trying to decide which was the worst one of all of them and I can't help but think it was Brendl. I remember vividly us picking him and most of the fanbase at the time was stoked as Brendl was supposed to be a Peter Nedved type but even a better sniper. Boy were we wrong. Never played a minute for us and his career went the way of Nail Yakapov...even worse.

Funny thing is, Brendl is still only 38...what a waste of god given talent he was. Quite possibly the worst 1st round pick in Ranger history.

Given the drafts, you didn't miss much immediately after Brendl.

Picking Jessman is the worst when you consider who went after them.

Yeah Jessiman was pretty horrible obviously but for me due to the hype Brendl had going into the draft combined with how high we drafted him and he fact he never even played a minute for us, for me was the deciding factor between the two.

Nah, that draft was hot diarrhea and full of shady business, Atlanta basically got strongarmed by the the Canucks to take a player who shouldn't have gone number 1 so they could take both Sedins (so the next time a Nucks fan complains about never having drafted first overall throw that in their face), who by the way were the only good players in that entire draft aside from Zetterberg, who was completely unknown. Brendl was the right choice as far as talent, he just couldn't get it together for a number of reasons. Classic Rangers luck to end up with 2 top 10 picks in what turns out to be the worst draft perhaps of all time, at least since 1965, where what do you know, the Rangers had the first overall pick (who never played in the NHL)

I definitely criticized the choice of lineups and where he played when he was here. Didn’t love the way they tried to get him going

that said, he hasn’t done himself any favors. He’s been bad in Hartford. If he was forcing his way up with his play and they still ignored him, I would understand.

but this is weak. Show up in the AHL at least.

Right. He came to HFD and sulked. He has been garbage. Complete waste of a pick. Howden should be in the AHL,too. His development is starting to stunt as well.

Jesus you’d think I wrote that Brooks article tonight word for word. He eviscerated the kid.
THEY eviscerated the kid. So did carp. Nothing ever leaks out of the rangers unless they want it and both reporters wrote things that could have only come from the club.

He left the day after the roster freeze. This was both a FU to the organization cuz it an attempt to kill his value. And an indicator of how immature andersson really is. He might have been waiting for a trade since he was sent down, and when he understands the roster freeze and that it would be at least until after Xmas for a trade and andersson said I don’t want to spend Xmas alone in Hartford, I want to come home.

I’ll admit I was super wrong on lias. The medal toss was a sign of his immaturity and not some competitive fire. Hindsight the things we’ll remember most about him are A) he threw the medal, B) he tripped over the cord in a bad omen, C) he probably ends up a decent NHLer somewhere else where we’re constantly reminded of points A and B

Jeff Marek mentioned the phrase "23 players and 23 Ubers" on the 31 Thoughts Podcast a few weeks ago to describe a lot of situations around the NHL with players not really interacting like they used to. Game ends and each player goes his separate way. This situation is just sad to me because it really doesn't make sense and I can't blame the organization here. Do these kids talk to each other anymore? It can't all just be DQ, Gorts and Knoblauch helping young players get through their struggles. The players have to help each other also. For Andersson, does he reach out to a Jesper Fast or even Chytil before making a decision like this? Doesn't he see that Chytil went through the same exact treatment and came back better for it?

We'll never know but I just wonder to what extent these kids are voicing their problems solely to their agents and not their peer group.

This is definitely an interesting situation to look at. The new generation doesn't appreciate "togetherness" (Not even sure if that's a word but for lack of a better one, I will go with it) as much as the previous generation. I have the same problem at work. I manage a team of 12 technicians, and 10 of them are in their early 20s. They just don't connect to each other. I've tried to implement things to push them. With 10 different nationalities on the team, I introduced a "heritage day" every last Friday of the month where a different person brings something (snacks etc) from their home country and tells a story about a tradition at home. It's been 2.5 years now and despite my efforts, they still rarely talk about things other than work. It's a different generation for sure.

I'm from a generation where beers after work, or going to see a movie on Saturda with colleagues is just normal. Maybe this is to a degree what Marek means. The players just go their own way and aside from team events, they rarely interact outside of practice and games. If so, it's definitely a problem that goes beyond hockey.

Regarding Gordie Clark and people asking for him to be fired: Tampa Bay didn't fire Al Murray for drafting Slater Koekkoek and Brett Connolly in the top 10. It's not as if Clark has not done anything well.

Kreider at 19
Miller at 15
Skjei at 28
Shestyorkin in the 4th
Fast in the 6th
Stepan in the 2nd
Hagelin in the 6th
Chytil at 21

I can go on, but Clark's record is better than Ranger fans give him credit for

I guess Lias - like Kravtsov - grew up fairly privileged (Son of accomplished coach, right?) and never had to face any substantial adversity, at least on the ice. How they react is kind of impossible to gauge until they face it.
That said, Lias has been here three years and each year under a different regime. Sather/JG/AV/McCambridge. JG/DQ/McC. JD/JG/DQ/Knoblauch. So that’s got to be rough as well.

Hmm, Buchnevich responded, ADA responded. So did Chytil. All these guys are extremely skilled offensively and there’s zero evidence that their skills were suppressed or regressed under Quinn’s tutelage. If anything, Lias should have easier time adopting to it compared to these other prospects.

Clearly Buchnevich and Chytil adapted to some degree, that does not mean Quinn is getting the most out them.

The point is Quinn didnt develop them as much as they simplified their game to the North South style Quinn uses. That's regression if you will.

I've questioned his charachter after he threw his Medals into the stand because he didn't win gold and now He bails on the organisation without putting up a fight..

Glad to see him gone, never had an impressive shift as a Ranger....

Most impressive play was the steal and breakaway goal in a preseason game last season.

And I will admit i jumped the shark (get it) and was calling him the future captain immediately after it

What I do think is odd, is how Ranger fans are calling Lias a quitter for asking for a trade, but are lining up to advocate for Puljujarvi who did the exact same thing in Edmonton.
One is recognized for 'leadership and intagibles'

It doesn't matter at this point, it'd be damaged goods for damaged goods.

To be honest who would want to be in Hartford over Christmas... one of the worst cities for crime and poverty

That’s a good point

Poo actually was given a good chance to succeeed too

they rev both ridiculous . Kids that haven’t produced

A number of toughts around this situation

1. Lias leaving at this stage of the season. Things aren't working out well at work for him, the holiday is coming up. I'm sure he thinks life sucks at the moment. Let him take a break and spend the holiday with his family then get in touch with him back in January. He might have gotten his head cooled down then and got a new view on the situation.

2. Accountability, or the players view of it. We all as fans wondered about Howdens longer leash and no demotion when playing bad compared to Lias. I'm sure the players and specially Lias have wondered about it too. Howden have had a number of bad games when they both where on the team, and Lias never got to play in Howdens spot with better linemates. Instead Lias gets demoted after playing on the 4. time with players most of us would call scrubs.

3. The road to an established NHL career. All young players should have a layed out path the NHL from the management. From what I have read here and in articles linked here it feels like Quinn do not want Lias as the player he is, or can become. If there is no pathway to the NHL for Lias in this organisation he should of course try to get to another organisation that have a better path for him to the NHL. We have no or very limited info on what he is asked to work on, and how his progression on these fields are rewarded. Miht be that the NYR want him to aim for a middle 6 checking forward with high end PK abilities, and Lias himself want to try to be McDavid.

4. What now? A trade at this point is not good for the NYR. I hope Lias is not so disillusional that he believes that he is a good NHL'er at this point. He should tkae 1 step back, and play somewhere he gets ample playing time and feels comfortable. I think atleast rest of this season in Sweden would be good for him. Look at Puljujärvi. In august nobody wanted to even trade a 2. rounder for him. Now he is killing it in Finland, and building both his value and confidence up again.

What I do think is odd, is how Ranger fans are calling Lias a quitter for asking for a trade, but are lining up to advocate for Puljujarvi who did the exact same thing in Edmonton.
Speaking just for myself, as I’ve posted, it has less to do with requesting a trade, and more with how/when he did. If he had played through his ELC and then asked for a trade in the off-season thereafter, as JP did, I’d have 0 problem with it.

I see a lot of the word "entitled" being thrown around, like he's acting entitled because he hasn't done anything to be justified in asking for a trade. I don't buy that. We've moved guys all the time when they're unhappy. From trading guys like Kundratek and Byers (or was it Dupont?) to give them better shots elsewhere and letting a whole host of European guys leave after short periods of time. We've never been an organization to force guys to stay if they'd rather be elsewhere.

So, I don't think it's "entitlement" to ask for a move if you think your career is in jeopardy of going completely off the rails in a particular organization. If you think a fresh start is your only option for resurrecting your career and getting back on track, there's nothing unreasonable about asking for a trade, even if you "haven't done anything" to this point. Players have a right to ask to be traded.

The only problem, again, is going AWOL. Much like Kravtsov, it's probably a sign of immaturity and a young guy not knowing what to do when faced with more adversity than he has probably ever faced. It's inexcusable and incredibly frustrating as a fan, but I don't think it's "entitlement". I think that's a word we sort of lazily apply to people that age, of that generation, when it's not really warranted.
