I'm a little late to the party, but how is it he is "no longer with the team"? Isn't he under contract? Since when can a player just walk away from a contract?
He can't just walk away, really. I mean a guy can do it, and then it's up to the team how to handle it. They can suspend him, they could eventually terminate his contract under some circumstances, or they can let him walk. Remember when Avery was suspended by Dallas, and after his suspension, the team just told him to stay away and never again report? That was an "informal" thing and he could have likely grieved it. But both parties were okay with it, so it was allowed to happen. This is the same thing, just with the parties reversed. Eventually the team will loan him out or trade him or something, but I don't think they have any interest in making it any uglier by suspending him at this point.

Edge, if to summarize Lias's developement from draft until today, what happened?

I think he was on a good track until last year. I think the Howden-Andersson dynamic didn’t help.

I think him bouncing around didn’t help (he hasn’t played a full season anywhere for a few years).

I think, for whatever the reasons, once he came out of camp and got stuck in mud, the confidence and everything else just went with it.

Ultimately, I think he needs to be elsewhere. He has work to do on his own end. But I also think there is no where for him to go here with us, even if he did what he needs to do.

He didn't

At the NHL level that remains to be seen.

But anyone who watched him or spent time around him could see the leadership.

That never was a question. It’s why he wore a letter for his team. It’s why his peers followed him around. It’s something everyone noticed.

So yeah, there’s no revisionist approach here. He was seen as future captain material.

Well yeah but that doesn’t fit the narrative now so just change history @Edge, duh

If I'm Shestyorkin now I'm thinking maybe I should give Gorton a call too...

This has been my thinking for some time. I agree with your timeline as well. Earlier in the thread I lamented how different things might have been had last year been handled differently by the team. We'll never know, but I really think we mishandled him. And I don't often say that--I usually give the team everu benefit of the doubt, since I don't know what goes on internally. This still seems like a misplay.

There is truth in the belief that Andersson needed to do some things differently. There’s no getting around that.

But at the end of the day, a teams approach either helps address those concerns, or it contributes to it.

In the end,I don’t think the Rangers did themselves any favors. Having said that, I think there’s this belief in a unicorn player taken after Andersson and that’s somewhat misleading.

Had we taken most of the other guys picked in the next 10 or so picks, the odds say we’d be having some pretty concerned chatter right now anyway. It would just be different chatter. Unfortunately that’s the nature of how the 2017 draft is shaping up and one of the reasons why we were able to land a 7th pick.

But if you’re looking for the best players outside of the top six, in what is definitely looking like a draft with a huge drop after that point, we grabbed one of the two players most teams would point to as most promising at 21.

Part of this is Lias never getting a real shot in the NHL. He earned 2nd and 3rd line minutes over Strome and Howden in camp.

part of this is Lias not doing anything in the NHL or AHL with the minutes he was given.

regardless, I’m shocked by this. I didn’t think he was that kind of guy

Hes got top line minutes in the AHL, what has he done with it? Also he never earned anything over Strome, Howden for sure but Strome was pegged in the lineup with his play last spring.

WTF is going on? Who’s next to want out? Why didn’t someone like Zadina ask out? Not getting playing time on a crappy Red wing team and now getting his chance and playing pretty well.
Having said that I’m not trading Lias for a 3rd or 4th rounder (if that’s even his value right now) like some posters mentioned. Let him to back to Europe or just simply sit home
