Pro sports are not for everybody. I am sure Lias could get a job at Ikea. This is what happens when you reach for someone without the skill or mental toughness to be a pro, let alone a top 10 draft pick.

I say they cut bait now. Ain't no one trading for this guy. I mean if Detroit had deep dish pizza in-house, maybe we could get one but that's about it.
He obviously had the skillset and toughness to be a pro. Look at pre-draft rankings. This idea that they made a huge reach on a random kid is silly.

While I like'd this post, I'd say it's a mix of both. They THOUGHT he had the skillset and toughness to be a pro. I think we all did. We all figured he could carve out a nice, long career for himself and it was going to be a guess whether that would be as a 2nd liner or a 3rd liner.

But that's the problem with projections. Even in this day and age of advanced scouting techniques, a guy can simply not develop.

If it's truly a fitness to play thing at the center of this, the NHLPA would file a grievance on his behalf, which would likely include a report from Lias' doctor. The team would present whatever records they had, of any examinations performed by their doctor and any communication they had. The League could either rule for Lias, and say something like the Rangers needed to reinstate him with back pay, and then potentially sanction them, or they could say the team did nothing wrong and deny the grievance. If Lias didn't like the result the next step would be to file for arbitration, and then they could bring in a third party doctor to give an opinion. I imagine the NHL uses arbitrators from the FMCS or AAA. The arbitrator's ruling would then be final and binding.

If it went all the way to arbitration it could easily go until the end of the year. IDK what the exact timeline is in the NHL but in most places it's somewhere between 30-90 days to file a grievance, so he could still be well within his timeline.

Thanks for the enlightening answer.

Nearly everyone thought he did is my point. It wasn’t some crazy Rangers reach out of left field.

Sports labor law fascinates me and is the reason I went to law school. I enjoy my practice (and I'm very good at it) but posts like yours give me a twinge of regret that I didn't pursue that area of law.

Thats an awful tweet by Dreger... Lias agency doesnt have insight into his head, this also contradicts what Lias himself Said in the interview(s)

I also disagree with the notion that this went off the rails from day one.

He had very good D+1 season. Truthfully, the first half of his D+2 season wasn't bad either.

The latter half of last season, and the start of this season is where things went off the rails. We can debate why, but I think there are two elements that somewhat cloud discussions about Andersson:

1. He wasn't a popular choice at the time.

2. His recent actions basically poisoned the well with the fan base.

Either one of those would change the climate a bit. In combination, it's pretty much a death sentence.

When did Lias say he was having mental health issues? I thought he said he "wasn't doing well mentally" which is something I tell my wife when I burn dinner.
He sure as hell didn’t just say that he is ”upset with the situation”...

Transalations doesn’t do the interview justice. Dreger and this agent trivializing mental health, awful by both.

Lias has not said he's having mental health issues. It sounds like he's talking about being burned out. Not having actual, treatable mental health issues.

Lias needs to discuss this with his agent. That's sorta what he pays the agent for.

He's doing himself a disservice by speaking out in Sweden for no real reason. It's helping no one.

How about you regale us with all of your inside information, then. You bitch and moan constantly whenever Lias is discussed, yet you just vague-bash everyone else.

You seem to think you have this inside information, so tell us why everyone else is wrong or just stop posting.

I agree but his agent should probably just tell Dreger no comment there

Guy is basically leaving Lias out to dry. You pay your agent to not do things like that

Why would the NHLPA get involved in a situation where it's clear the player hasn't earned a spot and is being treated accordingly?

They would if he actually was being bullied or actually was being treated wrong. That's why I really distrust what is coming from Lias right now.

The NHLPA should've been involved from the get-go if there was an actual issue. That's what they specialize in.

As the NHLPA has been sidelined in this, it makes me distrust everything coming from Lias. I cannot imagine his agent, who is a pretty decent one, sitting the NHLPA out of this if there were actual issues.

trivializing mental health? They didn’t do that. they said he doesn’t have any mental health issues. Pretty sure the agent would know if he did. The kid sounds like mentally he’s not in a good place when it comes to his career and hockey right now. That can be as simple as being disappointed about how things have gone. But if he doesn’t have any real mental health issues like depression or bipolar disorder, it’s good reporting to report exactly that.

The only Inside information i have is that Swedish is my 1st language and i’ve read the interviews...

Your overall views always come across as terrible, no surprise your views on mental health are from the 50s too.
