Let's talk, specifically, about our D

And they will, with the draft picks they obtain in the Martinez trade. I'm thinking Deano's going to let Stoll ride it out, and eventually lose him for nothing. I don't see Lombardi doing that with Martinez as well. He's a responsible asset manager.

I agree with this post Martinez can stock the pick cupboard and maybe can also help out the Mancheaster a little with a player or two. If hes leaving we need to get something for him. Hes replaceable i think from within. (between McNabb and forbert or Colin Miller )

I think Martinez deserves his own thread.
Do your stay or do you go now?
Do you take try to sign him for x, and if he won't trade him?
Does he have until the trade deadline to prove himself? Or merely increase his trade value?

You have others to sign after this season.
Williams, Stoll, Toffoli, Pearson, Clifford, Muzzin, Regher, and Jones.

And 18 million plus whatever increase in the cap, factoring in the weaker Canadian dollar. My safe guess 20-23 million?

Problem with waiting til after the playoffs is that, we may get nothing in return for Martinez. I'd rather play it safe, than to be sorry.

We've already gotten two series clinching goals and two Stanley Cups. That's a lot better than nothing I'd say.

If AMart manages to stay out of Sutter's doghouse for most of the season and is playing well down the stretch, you roll the dice and keep him till the offseason. If Sutter loses faith in him, trade him away. It really all boils down to how Sutter utilizes him.

yes exactly if sutter plays him in a top 4 then you have a chance to keep him If he doesn't trade and get value for him.

Every time I read about trading Martinez I die a little inside.

He's a perfect fringe top 4 PMD. He won't be due a significant raise unless he had some insane year like 15-35-50, in which case, why are we trading him?

Doesn't make a lick of sense to trade him, and Lombardi knows that, thankfully.

Martinez is worth close to a 1st round pick, but if you're willing to lose him for nothing, hey, that's you. Hopefully, Deano's thinking with his head and not with his heart here.

The way I see it playing out, Amart is going to be the HS, assuming McNabb lives up to his expectations. If he doesn't, then that's another story. Either ways, I suppose it's a good problems to have.

Holy over-valuing Batman.

Sorry, but Martinez is not worth a 1st-round pick.

He will be a UFA and the fact he has two rings already will be a target. He will get stupid money from someone unless he really wants to stay in LA.

Even if he is worth 1st round pick, Kings are in win now mode and trading Martinez isn't going to help them win now. Hypothetically, is it better to keep Martinez while going for another cup and risk losing him after the season, or trade him for some future assets while creating the hole in current lineup?

I would go for cup over future assets every time.

Not exactly aiming for the stars here, but I'd like to see the kings pick up a player like Theo peckham. He has a bit of NHL experience, gritty, youngish and cheap.

Considering how important Alec Martinez was during the last playoff run, I can't see why the Kings would want to trade him during the season. Maybe if the Kings were out of a playoff spot come February or March. Let's all hope that doesn't happen.

Martinez isn't going anywhere. Some posters here are speculating without a basis...they might as well start a blog and call themselves a mayor, or a supervisor, or a congressman...whatever.

Court jester seems most appropriate for many.

Too early to deal Martinez and risking free agency is not "losing him" as we can still sign him. And it's not for "nothing" either, it's to get him for a playoff run.

Lombardi has already talked to his agent many times about if he wants to stay and he will know if he has a good chance of signing the guy.

Also, Martinez is definitely worth a first normally but not as a rental. At this point in time, that's what he'd be. So he doesn't have huge trade value presently. I say we keep him rather than get a 2nd rounder.

For those who are saying that the kings are in a all-in mode, please explain to me then why wasn't Mitchell re-signed??? Clearly, we're a better team with Mitchell, yet, Lombardi chose to pass on him. Like I said, these are tough decisions that Lombardi has to make. And while the possibility of trading Martinez may seem counterproductive, it is the right business decision to make.

Just out of curiosity, for those who insist on keeping Martinez around for the entire season, just where does he play, with whom, and how many games? Also, where does McNabb fit into all this? Does he sit, while Martinez plays??? All these things are what Lombardi has to factor in, so, let's hear it.

Asset management, people. It's nothing personal.

Salary Cap. If we kept Mitchell, we'd have to jettison one or possibly 2 others. Given his age, Mitchell was the obvious one to go.

AMart will anchor the third pair. His ability to play on the left and right side is key. He will start with Greene then play with McNabb for a bit. McNabb and Greene will both be healthy scratches at different points in the season. AMart will play 82 games barring injury, with significant time on the PP and a more limited role on the PK.

Close to a 1st I said. Keep in mind that Vey got us a 2nd...

Yeah, and Vey was an original 4th round pick. It's not ill-conceived that Martinez could fetch a 1st rounder. I don't think you want to do that if you are the Kings. That guy is simply underrated by too many people. The Kings need to keep a balance of prospects but not deplete their existing core. DL is definitely up to the task.
