Let's talk, specifically, about our D

Just my two cents having seen McNabb for basically his whole career, I think he's ready for a regular bottom-pairing role. You guys have the players and system to support him. He might well see some stints in the press box, but if he's not ready now I'm not sure how much that is going to change. He has the tools to contribute on the 2nd PP unit. Who would his partner likely be? That's probably important with him.

Thanks for the input. I would assume Matt Greene would be his partner.

Ron - I think you made a mistake in your 2011-2012 rankings of offense.

Pitt was #1 at 3.33 G/Gm
Van was #5 at 2.94 G/gm
PHX was #18 at 2.56 G/Gm
STL was #21 at 2.51 G/Gm
NJ was #16 at 2.63 G/Gm

I do honestly believe that facing the toughest offenses in this years playoffs was a big factor in our inflated Goals against average. Outside of VAN, did anyone else's offense scare anyone that year?

You are right, I clicked the wrong column, for both seasons.

As such, we faced:

#6 San Jose
#1 Anaheim
#2 Chicago

and

#18 NYR

So, these should bear out my original assessment that this was a MUCH TOUGHER ROAD in terms of facing offensive firepower throughout the West to get where we are today.

Im worried.

Mitchell was a rock on this team. It's a pity that they resigned Greene. I know he's a leader but if we want to win more cups we need SOLID defensemans like Mitchell/Scuds. People will realize how much Mitchell will be missed. I just hope McNabb or someone can really start turning heads during camp.

Crossing my fingers...

I don't get it

What is there not to get? The guy was a ROCK, an absolute ROCK to this team. Losing him was tough. I think we could have beat Chicago if we had him in 2012. Did you see how Chicago's O steam rolled our D?

We learned from it in 2013 and we rebounded back. We got tougher and got more experienced.

But hoenstly if this team wants to continue to win cups and build a dynasty (we all want that!!!) we need at least 2 SOLID SAHDs. (Reg/??? greene, maybe. McNabb, maybe). Only time will tell but I'm a little worried. Just my 2c.

wish mitchy all the luck

loved him as a player but its time to say goodbye

without him we wouldnt have won 2 cups (despite his poor play occasionally through this yrs playoffs)

but its time to give mcnabb a chance and to develop him like we did muzzin

He'll be a safer one to develop. He won't be a top pair while doing so.

Did you see how Chicago's O steam rolled our D in 2014? Skuds ability to play was/has fallen off, and Willies is as well. People think they make our D look good, I'd argue the team makes them look good.

Plus if the Kings D does slip some....just play DD more mins imo. Solves all problems.

It's time to let go of the 2012 defense comparisons. I mentioned this in another thread and the numbers that team defense gave up that year was historically great. Look it up, I'm not doing all your homework for you! But it was the best defense over 102 games this century and likely longer than that. They gave up 170 goals in the regular season and only 30 goals in 20 playoff games. 200 total goals in 102 total games. Unless I missed something, there is no team that let in fewer goals in total or an average over the course of regular season + playoffs, including the dead puck era.

FYI, did anyone read the Sports Illustrated article of the Cup issue? It specifically says that during the Olympic break, Sutter was plotting on how to dethrone the Blackhawks and decided that the best way was not to try and contain them and play bend but don't break, but to attack them and throw offense right back in their face. I thought it was an interesting read.

do you have any idea where can we read that article?

Hm,

Jennings Trophy..............

Stanley Cup..............

What was the question again?

Sutter and Lombardi deserve a ton of credit. Months before the playoffs started they came up with a game plan, got the tools needed to be successful (Gaborik, Toffoli, Pearson) and got the job done.

:yo::yo::yo:

Obviously our defense could be better, but given the incredible amount of defensive responsibility instilled in our forwards (especially our centermen), I don't think any of us should be worried barring actual poor results during the season.

Exactly. When you have Kopy, Stoll and Richards down the middle and Quick in net, team D is ridic.

Perfect year to develop a rookie. Take advantage of Reghr's last year with the Kings. (His money is going to Mart and Muzz next year)

It's funny how much Muzzin's stock has risen, in such a short period of time. He's already one of my favorite kings. I hope Lombardi locks him up on a long term deal.

Just looking at the LA Kings' D, I already have accepted the notion that this is the year Drew Doughty shows to Willie Mitchell that he's coming into his own.

Huh??? Wah???

For starters, I do remember reading how Willie Mitchell was brought in as a mentor to Drew Doughty. Now that Willie "[took his] talents to South Beach", this is the perfect time for Drew to show a more serious side, if you will.

In addition, the old adage "the student must exceed the teacher to be one" applies to Drew, let alone the rest of the blue line corps.

What I want from DD is less chirping and more discipline.

I wouldn't move him (if we do, but I'm not counting on it) until after the playoffs. We'll need all hands on deck.
