Well that's just it, I was considering their popularity on more of a "Hollywood" level. I do get the sense that Dolan is probably more "buzzworthy" in Quebec though, that's true.

I'd say in Quebec he is... certainly. He's more of a personality and a "star." Writes, directs, and acts in his own films at such a young age has brought him a certain celebrity status. He doesn't seem to want to make the transition to Hollywood like Villeneuve did.

Villeneuve is definitely more popular in Hollywood's eyes.

Villeneuve's movies are more "Hollywood friendly".

Sucks that Joaquin Phoenix turned down the Lex role, would have truly been great. Eisenberg is just a bad choice. Lex at the minimum has to be the same age or a little older than Clarke. Eiseberg still looks like a 19 teen year old going through puberty, just looks bad on screen. Plus he's too short lol.

I'd also argue that he is even bigger internationally than Villeneuve. He split an award with Godard and was on the Cannes jury last year. He's a Cannes darling.

Certainly. But Villeneuve was/is a Cannes darling too. Only now he seems to have settled into a Hollywood phase. Dolan looks like he's headed in the same direction, only a couple of years behind Villeneuve. They're both kind of following similar trajectories really. But Villeneuve I think is the bigger industry name as an in-demand A-lister while Dolan is doing the arthouse thing for now.

Well Villeneuve never won Cannes as a feature director, nor was he on their jury.

I don't think Dolan will necessarily do the big picture/budget Hollywood world, his style is much more limited to minimalist melodrama. I feel if he broke from that, we'd see his weaknesses even more.

It seems like he was set to, he had an English-language movie starring Jessica Chastain on the docket, but it looks like that's not happening anymore so I'm not sure. I don't mean he's going to direct the next Transformers but I can see him doing basically what Villeneuve did with Enemy, a bit of "Hollywood arthouse" stuff if you like.

I don't like Dolan as a person, actor, director etc. and refuse to watch anything that he's part of. He may be talented but I just don't like the way he comes across.

I feel exactly the same way, something about him rubs me the wrong way. I wouldn't go as far as refusing to watch any project he's involved in but I don't really enjoy the movies he acts in because of the way he comes across.

 The Polanski Defense was the first thing I thought of too.

People can watch or not watch whoever they want, but there are actors and directors out there who have said and done way worse things than Dolan, whose biggest crime I believe is that he comes across as a pompous jerk sometimes...so I don't really get that point of view personally. But I digress...

Thanks for the answer

I actually started breaking bad in the meanwhile and holy I wont stop watching them until Ive watched them all.

Next on my list is Sopranos. I even own the first season.

Then I might try Viking

Yeah Breaking Bad is my favorite TV show of all time. The spinoff, Better Call Saul, is also fantastic and worth checking out. Only 1 season so far but it was absolutely fantastic.

Woody Allen is an even bigger tool than Dolan.

Dolan isn't the most likeable person but he's talented as ****. I feel like he shouldn't act anymore in his own movies. I really loved Mommy because of that.

I personally don't understand all the hate towards Xavier Dolan's.

I'm not huge fan of him but the guy clearly has a huge talent and it would be shame not to admit it. I watched his movie Mommy not long ago and i must say that while it's clearly not my favorite type of movie, this guy has a real talent as a director.

I'm not going to list them all because most are obvious, but in my opinion, the most impressive was the way each soundtracks he have chose was in perfect harmony with all their scenes.

That scene where they are all dancing on a Celine Dion song was hilarious and wonderful. One of the highlight of the movie.

We finally have talented directors from our corner, we should support them...

^ Agreed on all counts.

Well except for the part about not being a fan of his personality, I don't even really know where those complaints come from. He did a Q&A after the premiere of Tom at the Farm that I went to and came off perfectly down to earth and pleasant. So I dunno.

The only thing i do not like about him is when he starts to cry when one of his films did not win a prize, as if the others directors could not make excellent movies too. But that's all.

I don't know about complaints, for me I was talking about my personal feelings which are totally subjective. I'm sure if I got to know him he'd be a cool dude and I don't doubt his talents as an actor or director. I just can't stand his tone, his mannerisms, just annoys the hell out of me.

My take on Xavier Dolan:

Mommy 5.5/10

Great cinematography. At least 35 minutes too long. He could have cut a lot of stuff and make a better movie. The music too loud for nothing. A lot of the text seems fake to me and i rolled my eyes multiple times.

I killed my mother 7.5/10

Great cinematography . Not too long for nothing, not too loud and movie seems less fake than mommy despite Dolan very average acting abilties at that time.

A problem i have with Dolan is that he is doing a lot of dubbing in French and he has a highly recognizable voice so you see him immediately and not the character he is dubbing.
