Every character was a clichéd broken individual. Oh I'm a wild alcoholic detective! :( The wonderful thing about the first season was the absolutely incredible brooding and mysterious atmosphere it created and a complex character in Rust. That atmosphere was no where to be found in this episode. It's a completely different show now. Many people were hoping for a similar tone.

The acting, aside from Colin Farrell, was pretty atrocious. Vince Vaughn can't act for ****. The storyline was convoluted right off the bat.

I mean, I'll watch the season but this episode was a mess. Too much was crammed into it. The simplicity and minimalism of season 1 is gone.

The best part of the episode was Colin Farrell asking if the kids **** in his son's shoe.

Excellent. Shake off all the McConaughey fanboys once and for all. It's becoming increasingly obvious from people's attitudes towards S2 that they didn't really like True Detective anyway, they just liked The Rust Cohle Show.

Watched the first episodes of True Detective and Ballers. I thought TD dragged along for most of the hour but think it will only get better starting this coming Sunday.

Ballers, meh, not good, not bad. May or may not portray "real life" in pro sports. It was entertaining and will be watching episode 2 for sure.

As anyone watched Sense8 yet? Is it worth getting Netflix for it?

Ballers, I have a feeling is gonna be good

And if anybody ever needed proof that hbo's boob requirement was a real thing, just watch ballers, that amazing set of boobs in the first episode is just about as gratuitous as it gets

Ballers just looked like Entourage but football related. I'll still watch it but hope they have different angles.

I hope that one day Roarchach from the watchmen gets his own movie, sounds like you want the same thing because batman will never get that treatment.

Well it's pretty possible that it could be made. You watch the Gotham Knights cartoon movie and it's a good blueprint of what I'm talking about, it's very atmospheric, very film noir, mixing some anime into it. It's really not that complicated. These guys really got it and it's a Batman Warner production, so some people in that company gets Batman.

Also there's the example of the Netflix Daredevil show that more grounded super-hero stuff can work.

I can just imagine.

Her reviews of Iron Man 3 and Man of Steel were pretty great. But she got so much **** from her MoS review that she took it down.

If you go to rotten tomatoes, and click on the negative reviews of any comic book movie written by a woman, you will find really awful, barely coded misogyny in the comments.

But that's the thing, viewing the comments in her video section on You Tube, I never found them having particularly misogyny stuff. Some disagreed with her, some were agreed with her and so forth. But it's like some critic seems to have thin skin and only sees the people that are negative toward them. I've seen several makers of vids male and female taking down their stuff even though the things said were not that negative.

The only time people got her case was when she went on feminist rants. That's when some posters too offense. But most of the time when she stuck to talking about the quality of the movies, there was no hoopla.

That being said, maybe she got more crap on Twitter and Facebook? I don't know. But I think if you make videos critiques of movies(and videogames, etc...) and you cannot take the heat, then that line of work is not for you. Because you rely on other people to watch them so there's this exchange and people are not gonna like all your stuff.

In the case of MoS for example, she should have stuck to her guns and keep the review as is. Don't make a big deal out of it.

Completely agree.

I liked the first season... didn't think it was as great as some people did but I enjoyed it. I'm also all for a reset button ala American Horror Story with new characters. I expect things to be different. But this was just so formulaic and cliché. And then they bash us over the head repeatedly with gloom... "this is my least favourite life..." I mean give me a break.

Nothing about this episode was natural. Everyone was a caricature... It was very forced and contrived. I won't write it off yet but that was very bad television in my opinion.

Yup yup!

Even though Colin Farrell played it well, his violent, yet somewhat functional and sad alcoholism is something we've seen time and time again.

This episode was basically a ****ty version of Chinatown.

He is a great character, not sure what you mean by complex but they got a lot in. It is not a character type we frequently see on TV, some author of an obscure novel actually implied TD plagiarized the Cohle character type because they had something like it before.

Complex mainly in the portrayal of his struggles with alcohol.

I finally watched True Detective 2x01,

I find it intellectually difficult to take in so many new characters at once. A lot of different players, relationships, names, motivations, personalities to take in quickly. I do not think I got it all at all. I will need to watch it again.

Taylor Kitsch took a blue pill before sex. I assume it was viagra. What is the rate of fit men in their early 30s who need Viagra? It is great to see him again though, I like the actor.

Rachel McAdams - is this the sexiest she's ever been? She has my interest otherwise. They have given her a good role. Unfortunate family situation. Key job. Aggressive personality.

I think I might just wait for the end of season 2 and binge watch because of the reasons you mentioned above. Besides, there's only 7 more episodes to go.

Finally saw Gone Girl btw. I enjoyed it for the most part. Fairly implausible movie but still entertaining. Would've liked a more definitive ending for it.

Yes, and his season is over now and he's not coming back. Time to move on and see if S2 can create other great and complex characters. There is room in the world for more, after all.

I guess you were premature in your earlier declaration of True Detective as one of the greatest shows ever if you hated the first episode of S2 that much?

All this first episode showed was clichéd characters... So I'm not holding my breath for complex characters.

Sure, I was premature.

Still think that first season is up there with some of the best, though.

Those that like suspense/spooky might want to checkout Something Wicked This Way Comes.

Fantastic!

They have not done anything at all with the characters yet. There has been no evolution. Calling them cliche seems excessive.

Saw two bad movies this weekend on Netflix.

Surrogates (2009), Grade: F
Wrath of the Titans (2012), grade: F

Recommendation: Avoid
