I don't mind TDA re-signing, but it looks like he may have been eating a few too many philly cheese steaks after getting bought out. Hopefully we don't have a darling situation to deal with.
TDA looks like he has had quite a few donuts. Btw: Nice to see Tro and Fleury there too.

I said this in a prior post, but Pittsburgh IMO were always the Karlsson favorites. Not because Carolina thought that EK and Burns were bad fits together, but rather because there would've been no way for Carolina to provide draft pick sweeteners for San Jose. We have no bad contracts to dump, meaning that a trade with us would've led to fewer assets for San Jose. Pittsburgh, OTOH, is teeming with turkeys, meaning that they must give up more in order to improve their team.

Posted this on the mainboard TDA thread but deserves discussion here too...

Slavin - Burns
Orlov - Pesce
Skjei - TDA
Chatfield
Coghlan

That D group could be the best of the cap era top to bottom, incredible depth and top end talent throughout all 3 pairs. In the regular season I'd roll those 3 pairs completely evenly at ES and spread out PK and some PP time. Everyone would be fresh

Would this D group on paper be the best top to bottom of the entire cap era? I honestly think it would be. Slavin is a top 5-10 D, Burns top 25, Orlov, Pesce and Skjei all probably top 50, TDA purely on the ice is a top 4 D man, Chatfield the best #7 in the league and it's not close.

I highly doubt this group doesn't change before the regular season starts but man on paper that is ridiculous. Unfair to Chatfield, though he could rotate with TDA. Gotta think the borg is still looking to upgrade F and that will bring with it a D or 2 going out but if some of those opportunities don't work out it's possible we could just stick with this group.

Orlov and Pesce would be a great 2nd pair but Skjei and Deangelo together on the 3rd I’m not sold on. I think it’s likely they do move someone, but if they don’t move any defensemen between now and game 1 I’d probably just put orlov and tda on the third pair and keep the pairs that we know work together together

If acquiring a social leper whose production and ability are on a premature decline for 1x1.5 is what it takes to keep us from acquiring Karlsson at 4x9, while making the Flyers our bitch again, then sign me up.

Looking over the free agent lists for 25 and 26, there are some good forwards on bad to mid teams. Pettersson, a potential UFA in 26, is the big one. Then there's Connor (2026), Buchnevich (2025), Schmaltz (2026), Konecny (2025) and Ehlers (2025). That list will slim down, but there's some potential for an all-in move, as Meier and Lindholm would have been,

Pettersson just feels like a ticking time bomb for Vancouver. I sort of feel as if the teams most likely to get Pettersson, though, are teams that are on the verge of the playoffs, not the true contenders, mainly because it's those teams that have the high-to-mid 1st drafted prospects to trade, such as Detroit or Buffalo.

As much as I hate to admit it, I could 100% see Buffalo getting it done there and EP wanting to play with Dahlin.

Jesus Christ... this is the most privileged out of touch take I've seen in forever.

Brady Skjei... who has played at a #2D caliber the last two seasons, along with Tony DeAngelo, who has played at a 60 point pace in his last 3 full seasons... you're worried about them on the 3RD PAIR?

What are we even talking about here?!?!?!

Did I say either of them sucked? I don’t think they are ideal partners for each other if those 6 defenders are at the canes’ disposal. It’s likely a moot point because Pesce or skjei or both will be on another team by then

You said you're 'not sold on them' for 3rd pair duties. Bro... Skjei and TDA would feast on that lesser competition considering how well they play against tougher stuff around the league.

I can appreciate you might not think they would make the best pair ever based on the combinations that could be possible but again... it's the 3rd pair. Skjei has come a very long way from his human hand grenade days when he first joined the Canes. I would honestly put him over Pesce as the more steady defender right now. He seems to get burned and have less f*** ups in the defensive zone. Skjei and TDA's ability to move the puck, skate, and break out of the zone could be pretty unreal together.

It would be better than probably 2/3rds of the league's 2nd pairings.
