Not surprising if it finally goes through. Nice that we don't lose a prospect of any kind and he's cheaper the route things ended up going. He's decent enough depth for his specific role. And while I don't think he'll ever get good defensive marks from any standpoint, he seemed like he played a style of defense that fit our system fairly well.

Nice to get him for that cheap lol, $1m less than a trade with Philly would've been and we're not giving up Rizzo (intriguing prospect, albeit a longshot to contribute meaningfully for us). Hopefully if that means the EK door is closed then we can sign Tank. I'd also look at trading Skjei for futures and turning some of those into Kuznetsov at 50%.

Bunting - Aho - Jarvis
Teravainen - Koko - Necas
Svech - Kuznetsov - Tank
Marty - Staal - Fast

Slavin - Burns
Orlov - Pesce
Chatfield - TDA

Andersen
Raanta
Koochie

That's a ridiculously good roster and a significant upgrade on last year. One of you cap gurus can let me know if it's not possible to get Tank and Kuz at 50% while sending Skjei's cap out.

In your scenario, the max you'd be able to sign Tarasenko is just north of $4M.

If true, I'd assume we re-sign, or keep Pesce for 1 year.

I don't think they want to bump Chatfield up to the 2nd pairing full time even with as good as he's been.

Still leaves us with Skjei being replaced with Orlov on the 2nd pairing.

I bet the borg believe Orlov's defense is good enough to work with either Burns or TDA.

Trade Pesce + for Nylander
Trade Skjei for Stuff
Sign Caleb Jones

Slavin TDA
Orlov Burns (Give burns fewer mins to rest his bones)
Jones Chatfield

I don’t think they’d trade both Skjei and Pesce in one offseason. One, sure, but trade both and that’s a whole lot of turnover on a blueline where it normally takes a half to full season’s worth for newbies to become fully comfortable.

That would a pretty mediocre defense which killed us in the 21-22 playoffs. Along with other things too

Deangelo can give us some options on the power play. That’ll be good. He doesn’t ever need to play above 3rd pair at even strength though unless there’s a lot of injuries.

Edit to add that the more I think about it I wonder if they won’t say handedness he damned and run him and burns on one unit. Other teams would pretty well have to keep forwards way up on them the whole two minutes leaving a bunch of room, or just let tda pass at will and/or burns fire rockets

TDA held his own with Slavin at 5 on 5 in the 21-22 regular season. Of course, the playoffs were a disaster.

I wouldn’t be too shocked if RBA went back to Slavin-TDA at some point. That might be the best use of him at even strength. Orlov-Burns, wouldn’t be too bad either. I’d then run a hybrid 2nd/3rd pair of Skjei-Chatfield.

All that is probably a bit unrealistic. I don’t see Slavin-Burns being broken up, but there are certainly a bunch of different options now when it comes to the D pairings. You have to think a Pesce (or Skjei) trade isn’t too far away.

While at first I loved the irony of the would be trade, now that we have Orlov I don’t know that I’m feeling Tony as a need unless we’re doing a two d pp unit. He won’t be playing with Slavin and I don’t know that he’s a featured pp player.
Rod has put less offensively gifted defensemen out there on PP2 to have 2 d on the ice when the PP expires.

This would allow those two to be Orlov-TDA, switching to either Orlov-Pesce or Skjei-TDA after.

(D ideas temporary until the next trade.)
