The Samsonov signing was the result of arbitration. I don't think it'll affect anything.
yeah you're probably right on that. I think the big holdup is still wtf happens with EK.

If EK goes to Pittsburgh, we trade out Pesce or Skjei, sign TDA on the cheap, and sign Tarasenko.

If EK goes here Ottawa signs Tarasenko, and the pieces that would be the return for Pesce are what's going to San Jose plus a bit of a kicker.

If EK stays in San Jose I really have no clue wtf is going to happen.

Toronto has 48 hours to buy out Murray (Toronto is 6 million over with Muzzin LTIR’d). Murray’s potential buy out affects Ottawa’s space and being able to afford Tank. Ottawa is the primary competitor for tank
I still think we're the team to beat on that one. I think he would have signed withing 3-4 days of firing his agent if it was going to be just about anyone else.

The buyout window is 48 hours, but it opens only after 3 days from the final arbitration award or the voluntary signing of a player who filed for arbitration. If the dominoes are depending on this one, then it's not happening for a couple of days.

Please don't mock the six years plus two university courses I spent to learn the CBA

Karlsson is obviously the domino in my mind, because I think if there's any smoke to Tarasenko to Carolina we have to be able to spend that much and we're not going to do that if we think we're in on Karlsson. There are other teams in that same boat and the higher profile unrestricted guys are waiting for that to clear up. At some point, the Sharks are going to lose the business of one or more of these teams and contracts will start to go out to Kane and Tarasenko if they take too much time to nitpick the return. The thing you don't want to do is let it drag on until mid-August and have those guys off the board and find out you were second on Karlsson, which is how it feels our trade deadline went this past year. I think we felt pretty confident on Meier at some point and as that deal slowly fell apart, the rest of the options weren't enough for us to give up another 1st. we did some nice things this offseason, but in most years a guy like Orlov isn't the prize of free agency so I think much ado has been made about his addition. the interesting thing for a team like the Shark is that you can take a gamble on Pesce and flip him at the deadline for an unreal return as a rental or a preagency target that might make him more valuable as a temporary placeholder for his potential return in the form of young assets that Carolina couldn't/wouldn't put in a deal, but could do the veteran swap.

regardless of how it shakes down, I think we'd be remiss to run this team as it presently exists without one more strong commitment to increasing the scoring. forward or defense, we just need more pucks in the net. Karlsson is a guy that can turn a powerplay from a weakness to a strength. can he take a decent one from good to dominant would be the question.

Given the situation in Toronto, I wouldn't minimize the impact of the Samsonov award. Even after a proposed Murray buyout, they still have about $1 million to squeeze out of their salary structure.

Karlsson has been on a team with a Top 10 regular season PP just 1 time in his career. That lone season, 18-19, has been bookended by 7 (in a sample of 8) with his team in the Bottom 10.

Not to say that he’s responsible for that. He’s never played with a true superstar scorer in their prime, after all. This team can’t help him in that regard, though.

A lot of talented defensemen have manned center point in recent years. Burns led the league in PP points among D over the 5 year period (14/15 - 18/19) before the Sharks declined. Yet, the PP continues to struggle in winning time. To me, that says something about how much impact is possible from that spot on the ice. Karlsson would be seeing whatever combination of Aho/Svechnikov/Necas/Teravainen/Jarvis when he looks to his his left and right just like the others.

Yeah, Karlsson may be a great player, but I don't think he's the right player for this team. We need better forwards. We've known it for years. C'mon already.
