I could see the Borg maybe screwing with Grier, but not Karlsson. Canes have made the transition from a team that presumably players generally wanted to avoid to a team that players generally want to join. I can't see them diluting that dynamic by screwing with a player like Karlsson. I know you qualified it with "if we're being this petty", but I think the Borg is too smart to lose sight of the big picture.
Yes...but it's not intentional animosity in this case with Karlsson, it's collateral damage to a guy they may just not care if he wants to play here down the line as a consequence. EK's salary and poor defensive play make him the kind of player they've avoided in the past.

Our front office has been consistently, bloodlessly unsentimental...I don't think a "well, you break a few eggs" mentality about something like this would definitely be out of character. We're probably more sensitive as fans to it than either TD or DW.

Except that he can't play on the third pair because he needs a really good stay at home partner or he gets beaten like a rug.
The 3rd pair isn't going to face the same competition as when he was in the first with Slavin. Rods not dumb and he wouldn't end up on the ice the only person between someone like Aho and the goalie very often. He would be fine on the 3rd pair

And just like a 3rd pair of Coghlan, CDH, Bear, ect. They will be off the ice at first chance on the road. TDA doesn't need to be sheltered anymore than those other guys.
Plus it’s not like he was getting lit up like a Christmas tree on the third pair at the start of the season with us. I recall some blunders but he was decently competent to start with Cole (I think)

Yup thats my point. He is never gonna all of the sudden be a competent 1st or 2nd pair Dman, but as a 3rd pairing we could do a hell of a lot worse.

We ain't lying when we say he's the Jordo replacement

I don't understand that WAR number. Looking at Player Usage Charts, Kotkaniemi was very sheltered vs. Aho and especially Jordan.

Clearly his numbers are good so that's very promising, but he faced much easier competition with more favorable starts by a long shot. Staal was a shutdown center at 19-20 years old in just his 2nd season in the NHL. I hope KK can get there and think he could be the replacement.

Unless this dude's playing naked, then we'll figure something out for Karlsson's last couple years.

Different cap rules but I think most of us are Panthers fans that were waiting for the Saints cap crisis to hit for years until Brees retired. They always figured it out

Karlsson's contract only has 4 seasons remaining, too. It's very possible that he's still productive at age 37, like Burns. It's a different sort of situation than Hossa's recapture contract.

Kotkaniemi is only 0.6 away in QoC from Staal. While there isn’t a direct QoC to Corsi for ratio to bring them closer in comparables, he does a 8-9% jump in corsi for. I think it’s safe to assume we would see a drop in his CF with an increase in QoC but its hard to know the exact drop.

At the same time, Staal was likely still playing against third lines at 19-20. Yea he was the 3C but teams were putting their best out there against Crosby and Malkin.

Gotcha. Thanks

Kind of. Many times, teams would put their "shutdown" forwards out against Crosby and Malkin and IIRC, Staal's line was used early on as the "shut down" line in Pittsburgh. for instance, here were the 5v5 starts for each player from 07/08-08/09 per NST:

OZ Start %: Malkin = 62%, Crosby = 59%, Staal = 43.5%. Crosby and Malkin (rightfully so) were getting more offensive assignments and Staal was getting more defensive assignments.

I don't know how to get QoC from back then, but just looking at his list of opponents with most TOI against, it doesn't look like all 3rd liners to me. For example, when playing the Pens, about half of Ovi's 5v5 TOI was against Staal. He played a lot against Parise (who was a 30-40G scorer back then) and Gomez (who was a 70 point player back then), etc....

nothing interesting in terms of prospective returns from any of the teams. Just a collection of potential suitors most of all who are already known:

Buffalo
Dallas
Edmonton
Nashville
Toronto

Dallas being the only semi-surprise mention.

Nothing we haven't largely discussed already. Only team brought up that we haven't speculated about here is Dallas.

In lurking over there, I've seen some discussion about Pesce over on HFStars the last week or 2.

Buffalo, Dallas, and Nashville don’t have a forward that they would trade that interests me in any amount. They would trade being the key phrase. Edmonton likely isn’t moving their forwards so add them to the group.

Toronto is okay if they are willing to move Nylander.

Buffalo: futures interest me. Joker, Olofsson, UPL don’t interest me much
Nashville: futures, fabbro doesn’t interest me but he could be a flip piece.
Dallas: futures since Johnston isn’t available.
Edmonton: broberg with futures would be cool. No ceci.

Dallas - I'd certainly take Stankoven off their hands.
