Smart play for him. Take a 1-year deal on an offensive team, put up points and then cash in on a long-term deal next summer when the cap rises.

If somehow that’s true… next moves need to be:

- trade Skjei
- still try to trade for Karlsson
- if you can get Karlsson, trade Pesce

Most importantly (this is the controversial part), just keep the futures for Pesce and Skjei. That would be the spirit of “NHL 23ing” this offseason. Get better for “free” (using reasonable UFA deals and acquiring guys like Karlsson), and then use the assets that are being replaced by the “free” guys and leverage them into draft capital. Rinse. Repeat.

It’s how every EA NHL franchise turns into a powerhouse, and for years everyone has just out of hand said “this isn’t a video game, you can’t just do it like that” but… it sure seems to be our plan.

-still try to trade for Karlsson if you can
-if you can get Karlsson, trade Pesce
- use SOME of the assets from Skjei/Pesce to get a difference-making top 9 forward OR sign someone good
