I’d hate that.

Play him on 3rd line 1PP and then just let him walk at the end of the year if he’s not in the future plans. “Own rental” etc etc.

This is a team we’ve been saying needs more forwards, not less. This is also a team that needs to (smartly, safely) go “all in” this year. Getting rid of TT would seem to me to be a step back.
You don't get what I'm talking about. I'm talking about a defacto swap of TT for Bertuzzi if the market for him is soft. We've already added that extra forward in Bunting, but Bertuzzi gives us a size and toughness upgrade for a year if Turbo is used in the Karlsson trade. Bunting also was known to kill penalties, so he can also take that role, as well.

I’m saying I think we can fit and keep both.

I don’t really like the idea of sacrificing Teravainen for Bertuzzi.

If they could get Karlsson at 50% somehow, also adding TDA would pretty much negate them being able to add another high dollar forward. I think they’d only have $2-3M in space at best after those additions, even after subtracting both Pesce and Skjei, provided they take no salary back on those potential deals.

Edit- just playing around on CapFriendly if they dump both Pesce and Skjei, acquire Karlsson at 50% and acquire TDA at 50%, with a 20 man roster they’d have $6.4M in space

Right now we have $2,823,023.00 in Cap space if we Get EK for 40% retained his cost will be $6,900,000.00 per year. If we Trade Pesce, Drury and TT for EK, We will end up with $6,273,023.00 in cap space. Take away 2.5 million for TDA @ 50% retained and we will have $3,773,023 Remaining.

I don't think Bert is going to accept a $3.7 million contract. So I would suggest a contract at $3.5 million with 2.5 to 3.5 million in bonuses, which will by my understanding, allow that bonus money to be applied to next years cap.

That is how I can see the Canes landing EK and Bert or Tank

Not if we trade Skjei and Pesce
I mean, I guess, but the only way that works is if Karlsson becomes a 3-team trade where we move one of Skjei/Pesce to a third team. Because I can't imagine why San Jose would want both.

Seems much easier and straight forward to leave out the third team and trade Skjei/Pesce and Teravainen along with futures to San Jose and then move the other D-man to another team in a seperate trade for futures/cap room to sign Bertuzzi (or in a hockey trade for a forward).

It doesn’t have to be a 3 team trade. Acquire Karlsson, trade Pesce, trade Skjei. 3 separate deals for 3 separate players.

You're forgetting that we'd still have the ability to trade Skjei as well to free up more space in this scenario. We're not paying Skjei $5M+ to play third pairing minutes.

yes we have that ability, but Skjei has a M-NTC so our options are limited

It's a 10-team list. Odds are fairly good we'd be able to find a team who'd want him that's not on his list.
Might be hard to find a team that would take him at his full salary without sending any back

The next time Bunting kills penalties regularly will be his first time. He adds nothing there. He does play on the PP though. All of the moves being contemplated take an overall bite out of the PK.

It's impossible to know without knowing who's on the list, but there's always the scenario of flipping a pick or prospect to a team like Anaheim or Chicago to retain salary who'd then re-route him to a place that's acceptable.
