From a Sporting News article I ran across-

Winner: Carolina Hurricanes

Don Waddell continues to do good business in Carolina. The Hurricanes general manager landed Dmitry Orlov, the top defenseman on the market, with a two-year deal that carries a hefty $7.75 million AAV. The Russian will provide a big boost to the team's two top defensive pairings.

Waddell also brought in Michael Bunting on a three-year contract, giving the team an agitator in the forwards group. In addition, the Hurricanes re-signed forward Jesper Fast and goaltenders Antti Raanta and Frederik Andersen. Waddell chose to run it back in net with the duo that played the majority of the last two seasons together.

Not only that, but Carolina reportedly remains in the running to land Sharks defenseman and 2023 Norris Trophy winner Erik Karlsson. Even if the team misses out on Karlsson, the Canes have had a strong start to their offseason.

Just wanted to say it’s a little sad to lose MacEchearn. He definitely fits the style of the team and is the kind of player I’d love to see us add to the bottom six. Of course that’s a spot you can save money and promote from within to fill spots cheap. He didn’t sign for much but it’s a one way deal where he’s familiar, so good for him.

Watching him chug around in the playoffs was fun, and it seemed like a great fit. Hopefully we find more in that mold as we go along.

Pagnotta with some thoughts:

Marchment being available and Dallas looking for RD raised my eyebrow a bit. I wonder if the Canes would still be interested in Marchment+ for Pesce, doubt it after signing Bunting yesterday.

Adding both Bunting and Marchment would be a positive move to play in the style we want to play. I have no idea how it would work with the cap, and we’d have to move a body out but having both those guys would definitely make us a harder team to play against and better in the playoffs imo. Adding only one is a move in the right direction but adding both would be a nice change in tone as a team I think.

Seriously. Even if a Top 6 center were to be acquired, it's Kotkaniemi that will be getting 10 minutes a night EV, not Staal.

I’ll pass on Marchment.

Dude’s 28, has played 159 NHL games, has one season of good offensive production which was:

- on an exceptional offensive team on which many, many players put up significant career highs in scoring
- in a contract year
- not his most recent season
- a year in which he only played 54 games

I was willing to bet on him last year because of perceived system fit. But with another year of data based on his first year in Dallas, it’s probably a bet we would’ve lost…

His Dad suddenly died about a week before he signed the contract and it was a new team. I wouldn’t pick him up because of the offense of that one year. We could use guys with size that play the way we want to, and can chip in offensive. I’m sure he can do that. To me he’s no better or worse than Bunting regardless of what the fancy stats say. They can both play complimentary roles with skill guys, and make occasional nice plays on their own while being a complete pain in the ass to play against.

Bertuzzi would work great too obviously but I’m guessing he’s more expensive than Marchment. If not then hell yes if he can stay healthy.

Youre gonna have to trust me on this one. I know for a fact and have direct knowledge of it. Should be announced next few days. Few more details to iron out

If somehow that’s true… next moves need to be:

- trade Skjei
- still try to trade for Karlsson
- if you can get Karlsson, trade Pesce

Most importantly (this is the controversial part), just keep the futures for Pesce and Skjei. That would be the spirit of “NHL 23ing” this offseason. Get better for “free” (using reasonable UFA deals and acquiring guys like Karlsson), and then use the assets that are being replaced by the “free” guys and leverage them into draft capital. Rinse. Repeat.

It’s how every EA NHL franchise turns into a powerhouse, and for years everyone has just out of hand said “this isn’t a video game, you can’t just do it like that” but… it sure seems to be our plan.

I think that Skjei is for sure to be traded. If Karlsson is acquired, bye-bye to Pesce, as well. If the market is still soft for Bertuzzi, offer him a high dollar one year deal and see if he bites. Say hello to the toughest-to-play-against team that we've ever had.
