how did you get that?

625k (money saved from Koch spending half the time in the AHL) + 850k (current cap space) = 1475000. 1475000 / 47 (days left in regular season) = 31,382. A 31,382 player has a 186 day cap hit of 5.837 million.

am i messing this up?

No. You're right. I'm wrong. The penalty for burying Kochetkov slipped my mind.

Still, that's quite a bit of cap. There's some additional flexibility to add more internally by burying Coghlan and/or Lemieux.

Looks like Tarasenko would have made $250k more on a 1yr deal had he not fired his agent and stuck with the Canes’ deal:

We're not getting a high priced/caliber rental at the deadline, haven't you people learned by now. Maybe we circle back to Tank if Ottawa continues to suck but he shouldn't cost any more than a 2nd for us. Whoever we target, if anyone, will likely come with term or be very cheap to acquire.

this is true. there will be some mid range rentals that can score in this FA class.

Canes, due to the Gardiner LTIRetirement no longer on the books, can actually accumulate cap space to add a player with term at the deadline. This is what we were talking about.

Good riddance.

We're used to seeing players be greedy (arguably for understandable reasons like future injury concerns), but rarely do I recall in the NHL them being greedy AND dumb.

Also keep in mind that his supposed best friend, Orlov, plays with us. He's also the godfather of Orlov's son and vice versa. He would've gotten paid more money with us, and he would've played with his best friend.

Great job reading the market Tank.

Now it makes sense, they were trying to get him cheap. I would have gone to OTT too:

I don't know how Strickland could be told such different figures for a contract offer if he has legit sources.

He's been given two different numbers that are significantly different from one another.

*Edit* Tinfoil hat mode. Maybe someone (Tank's agent) told him our offer was way lower so Tank didn't look like an idiot since Strickland initially said we offered Tank more money than what he signed for. Plus it's the Canes; everybody knows we're cheap asses right?

Less likely, but it crossed my mind.

Perhaps the Borg's plan is to just be super patient with a little wiggle room so that when the right deal frees up a month from now they can pounce.

Truth be told, at forward, we lost no one of consequence (Stastny, Stepan, 34 seconds of Pacioretty and Kase). We gained one player of consequence (Bunting). We don't have to do anything, really. An up season from Teuvo and we're all the sudden probably #10 overall in GF next year.

However, for a true contender, and to protect against inevitable injury, you'd like to add one more guy there who can play top 6. I don't think we have any rookies who can be that, so it'd be nice to add someone. The Skjei-for-your-forward exchange just makes the most sense of optimizing the roster, so I imagine the Borg are still quietly shopping Skjei and Pesce. They're probably taking their sweet ass time, with 2 months+ before hockey starts.

@Big Daddy Cane

Thinking about the cap space number, we may be closer to your number.

We have 24 roster players with Svech not on IR.

845k + 470k + 296k. That turns into a 6.3 million dollar player.

470k is the savings for Kochetkov not on the roster for 70 of the first 139 days of the season. The 296k is from lemeiux being waived the other 69 (nice) days. The 23 man roster requirement goes away on day 139 so we technically wouldn’t have to send either down after that. Obviously that 6.3 million would be larger if we decided to send them down for more days.

It's about pricing what a player is worth to a particular team. Ottawa is trying to make the playoffs on a consistent basis, so they're willing to go higher on a player that may or may not help that. The Canes are trying to add pieces to a Cup contending team, so it's more about adding the right pieces at the right price.

I still see a Pesce move happening for maybe Nylander, if we got Nylander to match Aho cap on the extension, Bunting - Aho - Nylander would probably be the best line weve ever had, keep Skjei for a self rental.

Bunting - Aho - Nylander
TT - KK - Fast
Svech - Jarvis - Necas
Marty - Staal - Lemuix/Drury

Jarvis is slightly bigger than Point, gets sheltered for the draws, and plays a smart game like Aho, give him the go at center.

If we could move out Skjei for furures, flip for Brann from Ott

Slavin - Burns
Orlov - TDA
Brann - Chatfield

Saves us cap. Go even deeper, offer Drury, 2 1sts for EK at 50%

Slavin - Burns
Orlov - EK
Brann - TDA
Chatfield

No way nylander signs an extension for less than 10. I don’t think he’s worth that but he’s already thrown fits over for not getting paid what he wants
In Toronto, absolutely, especially with how it appears that Matthews is rumored to be after $13.5M. I'm not so sure, in a different situation. Additionally, I believe Nylander to be enough of a red-ass that if he were to be traded away from TO due to their Cap issues, he'd go on a bit of a Revenge Tour, to show them that they made a bad decision of shipping him off. Just my opinion, obviously. That 1st line that @Unsustainable posted above could be lethal.

Not that any of it matters, seeing as how Pesce almost certainly won't waive his No-Trade for TO.

There have been a couple reports that Nylander would take less than max if the other top players on his team were also taking less than max in order to optimize the lineup.
We haven’t guaranteed a ton of money to anyone never playing here before. I would be shocked if we gave Nylander 72 million without playing here.

I don’t see us making that push for him. We would do a 1 year contract swap for Nylander but ours likely block any moves to Toronto.

Seeing how we don’t do the first one and it makes no sense to trade a young roster player without an extension, im not seeing a match.

Would be cool though
