Ofc, this is not a 3-on-3 prospect scrimmage in July, but well at least something to get the spirits up...

SHL semifinals, game 5. Carlsson drove the middle early and made a pass to a teammate for an easy-ish goal. Then later on going to the middle of the ice again to fight for the puck, get it, and making a good scoring chance for himself.

Btw, he was 2nd on his team in the playoff scoring. But yeah, it's no scrimmage on July, ofc but at least something

Checking some highlights, I'd like to see his skating improve and I'm not sure a short summer is sufficient to do that... so definitely down to see him wherever, as long as he can work on that.

2nd in scoring, 1st in assists, and 2nd in plus/minus on the team in the playoffs.

Talks Carlsson a bit as well. Said the CBJ guy at Swedish WC team said the way Carlsson was practicing and thinking was off the charts

Have to take Davidson's statements with a grain of salt but if it is true that Columbus would have taken Fantilli at 2OA, it is a shame that PV couldn't get any value out of swapping picks with Columbus.

Enormous grain of salt. Also, while it would be a shame, if all our scouts want Carlsson and feel strong about it, you can’t make the trade. It’s not like we had the benefit of knowing who they would take.

I think the simplest explanation is that Columbus was content to take whichever fell to them. The Jackets were uniquely positioned to have some of the best access to both Fantilli and Carlsson because of the UMich-Jackets pipeline and because Josef Boumedienne is a scouting exec with the org as well as the GM of the Swedish national team for this past WC. At the end of the day, it’s not an interesting discussion who they’d have taken at second because the cost to move up wasn’t worth it when either player would be a stellar fit. Maybe they preferred Carlsson because of Boumedienne, but Fantilli preferring Columbus tips it back to more even.

The problem with that theory is that Jarmo approached PV on the morning of the draft inquiring about PV's interest in switching picks. Obviously, Jarmo had enough of a preference to make the inquiry. Whatever, it's all water under the bridge now. Just have to hope both players have great careers.

I don't see how that contradicts what I said. I said the cost to move up wasn't worth it. That means he did, in fact, inquire, and decided it wasn't worth the move.

And agreed! I'm a Columbus STH and the Ducks game on 10/24 is a must-see for me. Here's to hoping they're both with the NHL clubs at that point so I can see them face off in person!

I was specifically replying to your statement that you felt Columbus was content to take whichever player fell to them. My reply was simply to point out that Jarmo must have been interested enough in one of the two players to approach the Ducks about the 2OA pick. PV was not interested in dealing the pick (for better or worse). Maybe both teams got the players they were after...we'll never know unless someone leaks the Columbus draft ranking.

I think GM's have to kick tires.

Under BM in the 2020 draft, he fielded offers about the #6 pick, but kept it and drafted D Drysdale. No drama about that.

In the 2021 draft, BM fielded offers about the #3 pick, but kept it and drafted C McTavish. Then there was drama that BM didn't want McTavish because he fielded offers about the #3 pick.

I don't believe there's anything wrong about inquiring about moving up or trading down in the draft. Duck fans that wanted Fantilli are using Columbus inquiring about moving up to nab Carlsson as a way to rationalize Carlsson is a good pick.

I think they summed up Carlsson and Fantilli difference pretty well. It makes more sense to me since those are the reasons I started to lean towards Carlsson. He sees the ice better, knows the play before it happens, and he has to put little effort into making a great play.

I also like what they said about adding versatility and it will give the Ducks options with Zegras and McTavish.
