NAK and ZAR are supposed to be energy guys in the way Robertson was last game. Not punishing hitters, but all over the ice disrupting play.

Hasn’t worked out thus far, but the intention to bring those guys in was there.
Is that their makeup though? One guy was benched more and more as the playoffs proceeded and the other was cut loose, are they really energy guys?

So why was one benched in the playoffs and the other on a pto? They’ve been hitting for us too, so that part is fine.

I’m not saying they are great players, but they are exactly the type of players that you were describing when you were talking about the spark that Robertson energy provided.

Looks like Clifford is playing tonight. Good choice, Winnipeg is a big dirty team. We need our tough guys in tonight to settle things down if need be.

But Malgin and Joey Anderson are not good players

One of them can't even make the team.

The other did because waivers, but almost immediately lost his spot to a 21 year old rookie who was always better than him but again he got screwed because he didn't have to clear waivers.

They are better players than NAK and ZAR have shown.

And they are certainly better players than Simmonds and Clifford.

Malgin made the team because he deserved it just as much, if not more, than Robertson after preseason. The waivers were merely the tie-breaker.

Won't be a good choice if our bottom 6 is useless because all but 2 of the players in the bottom 6 are crap or are playing like crap, but let's hope that this is the game that the top line finally can do something. We will need it.

If that were true he would not have almost immediately lost his spot but he did.

Should have called up Douglas too just for fun, I know Stanley is a terrible fighter but would be fun to see someone bigger than him teeing off on him.

I am glad Keefe is showing he does not have a short memory with this stuff and was not going to let it go.

We will see if Keefe learns from his mistakes after this game, because putting ZAR on the 3rd line and icing both Clifford and Simmonds in a game is arguably the most idiotic lineup decision he has made in his 3 years as Leafs HC.

I just hope it doesn't cause us to lose first.

It's literally game 6 of the regular season. Relax.

I think this is more of a statement game than it is a must win.

We still have more than enough talent to win this game though.

It's not like the guys being sat have been killing it for us. Engvall and NAK have been a net negative so why anyone would have an issue with either taking a night off is beyond me.
Just trying to keep guys fresh, and given what you’ve said, hardly a drop off based on recent play. It’s not like we’re benching guys on heaters, they’ve been beyond vanilla. Maybe Engvall in particular needs a wake up call, he’s had no gusto to his game at all, zero energy or desire.

It’s always the same people losing their minds when a guy they hate gets in, that love to argue we over react to everything. I find the duplicity amusing.

OMG Clifford is playing!

Clifford and Simmonds have proven to be complete liabilities for the Leafs, and they are only getting older and slower. ZAR has only played 5 games but he deserved to get benched, not a promotion. Engvall has outplayed him. Malgin has outplayed him.

If this is a one-off because it is Winnipeg and Keefe cares more about causing crap than winning a hockey game, well he is a good enough coach and has a good enough team to be able to do that. It is certainly not the smart choice, nor the one I would make, but he has earned the right to make that choice.

If this becomes a recurring trend, then it is clear that they have not learned anything from our failures over the past few years. The Leafs have always hamstrung themselves when they started to value physicality over skill.

Leafs seem to be going back to the well on Simmonds and Clifford for their physicality now that the Murray cap is on LTIR. Just makes you think what they could have done roster building-wise if they hadn't stepped in that one.

Engvall and NAK have not been good to start the season. The early season injuries give the team some cap flexibility. Use it.

Get the hungry dogs in. Clifford and Simmonds are going to have a feast tonight.

Wow, is Engvall a healthy scratch? He hasn't seemed quite right anyways perhaps he's playing hurt.

Being an NHL tough guy is a particularly tough go these days: "Hey buddy thanks for the hard work but you're on waivers and going to the A." Then it's "Hey buddy we need you risk life and limb defending the team we didn't think you were good enough to make."

Has no one seen the Malgin thread?

Simmonds and Clifford probably both shouldn't be playing, but I am alright with it considering the game last year, if we lose, we lose, but we still have the talent to win.

"here is 900k for being willing to do so"

Does Clifford make 700k somewhere else? will anyone else sign him as an AHL tough guy?

Malgin is certainly better than NAK and Zar. I find he does all the little things right out there. He definitely deserves a consistent spot in the lineup.

Joey Anderson on the other hand, is dime dozen, he was invisible in all of pre-season, and really didn't look any better than guys like Holmberg/Steeves/Mcmann... If he can't shine amongst ahlers, he won't shine anywhere.

Really like this lineup
Agreed, this is balanced. I want NAK in over ZAR but I don't think NAK is killing penalties yet.

Engvall should be off this team. Simmonds, ZAR, and Clifford should be on rotation and any two of the three should be in the forward group on any given night.

Matthews has already taken a few licks this season. Marner took a few good hits the other night as well. No matter how much this fan base wants to dress a pure skill team, it's not how this league has worked and it never will work. Unless your stars can front up and scrap every now and then you're forced to dress guys who can take care of that.
