Not impressed. Matthews needs to wake up. Highest paid player in the NHL on his new contract. Come on man.

Recall early in the game, Mike J was saying Marner cares too much, a constant refrain we've heard. Who the hell has said that about Matthews ever? To me, that's an important distinction.
The problem with Marner is he's at his best when he simplifies his game. The opposite tends to happen when his linemates aren't picking up the slack, and that leads to him trying to do too much. That's what we saw in the Montreal series, and that covers most of this season.

Thank God Marner's hat trick wasn't wasted.

Another night where they needed 4 to win

And you guys wonder why I'm concerned about the goaltending.

I know they have a great offense I wish they didn't need to rely on it so much.
Cmon. This has become your main narrative as a poster. Goaltending this and goaltending that, to the point where it gets the #1 blame/issue from you in a game where it was the least of the team's worries.

Woll has even managed a .914 sv% or better his last 4 games played with your "the goalie must give us .900 or better every game" mandate.

Yeah I think Matthews is at the center of things being out of sync. He's has been exceptionally bad for a long while now.

Thank God Marner's hat trick wasn't wasted.

Another night where they needed 4 to win

And you guys wonder why I'm concerned about the goaltending.

I know they have a great offense I wish they didn't need to rely on it so much.

Call me crazy, but the 40 shoots allowed is much more concerning than the goalie who went 0.925 on the night and is ~0.920 on the season.

Recall early in the game, Mike J was saying Marner cares too much, a constant refrain we've heard. Who the hell has said that about Matthews ever? To me, that's an important distinction.

No one has said it about Rielly either... I think just certain players are in their heads more, and Marner seems like one of those players, but Matthews doesn't.

The problem with Marner is he's at his best when he simplifies his game. The opposite tends to happen when his linemates aren't picking up the slack, and that leads to him trying to do too much. That's what we saw in the Montreal series, and that covers most of this season.

Yeah, hustle Mitch is the quality Mitch, while globetrotter Mitch is a massive problem. Tonight he had the motor and was rewarded early and often.

I'd fire him now. Though the defensive injuries aren't his fault, the lack of defensive and PP structure absolutely IS.
The only D that would make a significant positive change to the team is a 100% healthy Klingberg and that has 0 odds of happening (not that he's good at D but he can put up points when healthy and sustaining a cycle is an indirect form of defence because opponent doesn't have the puck)

I don't have any desire to get the injured D back. Big whoop.

Hard to pin defensive issues on Keefe. Past regimes hung us out to dry and lead us to this point. Everyone should be a Burke fan for saving our ass with Rielly.

Treliving needs to hit the phones and figure something out. There's no major help coming in-house. We need to dump Brodies cap hit ASAP

The people shitting on 34 for the overtime are idiots.

The first time the team gets the puck in ot is on a great defensive stop and strip by Matthews who tries passing the puck up to Nylander who decides to skate away from the puck for some reason.

Seattle gets the puck back, they go in for a rush chance which Nylander swats the puck back to the corner and immediately leaves the defensive zone.

While the puck is tied up in the corner.

at 3:26 left in the OT, Matthews calls for a change, but notices that Seattle has already made one and if he goes off, it's a 2 on 1 in their zone.

Nylander is coasting up to the red line kind of playing goalie on the puck carrier who is just above the Seattle blue line. He HAS to change here.

When Toronto gets the puck back and 16 and 34 look to be going in, 34 has to change. He's had a 2:22 shift and can't risk getting caught out.

1:55 left in OT, Rielly passes it to Nylander who has come back on the ice after a 90 second shift, and looks off a completely open, no pressure at all, one timer for Domi at the face-off dot on his strong side, and loses the puck.

After losing the puck, Nylander coasts back to defend instead of moving his feet. He's called out by Mike Johnson at this time for not moving his feet. He gets completely walked because he's standing still.

Woll makes a great save and the play is stopped with 65 seconds left.

Matthews wins the draw and Toronto goes on the attack.

Marner creates an opening and passes it to Matthews' skate. He takes and passes it to an open Rielly, but it's too close to the body and he can't take a clean tap-in.

Seattle rushes back, Woll makes a phenomenal save and Matthews makes 2 puck retrievals to break out again.

Marner passes to Matthews' backhand and he can't get a shot.

Marner then tries to make another cross-zone pass, but it doesn't work and the period ends.

Well, Matthews could certainly use more trying hard lately, but I think the gold standard is a veteran, professional even keeled approach. You don't want to be too cool and detached but you also don't want shambles in the brain either. Workmanlike, consistent 3-1, 3-2, 4-2 wins, as Mark Spector would say.

He's married to the ridiculous narrative he creates so he doubles and triples down on it when he's proven wrong. It's actually quite impressive.

Eh, I'm not worried about it, considering half of those came from the big PP bonanza they got in the 2nd period.

It's always come too easy for 34, and he plays like it. He might score, he might not, winners like Crosby have an intensity he could only dream of.

Wow….
You just tried making 100 excuses for Matthews by blaming nylander, Rielly, Marner, the bench itself, domi

You didn’t mention that for 60 minutes he was a corpse skating. Or the fact that with 30 seconds left rielly Marner blew the zone because he had total control of the puck and fumbled the puck like a rookie which was a turnover. Or the fact that he tried deferring to rielly instead of shooting

Matthews could commit murder and you’d be the first one saying he didn’t
