If a ref stopped an empty netter, shouldn't that automatically count? That would make sense to me.
When the puck hits an official the play goes on. It’s not like he was standing in front of the net trying to stop it.

Played good enough to win again, didn't love the game though. Toronto hasn't been sharp since the Vegas game IMO. Lot of luls in their game in the o-zone. Against some better teams, they could have gone 2-3 in the 5 games instead of 4-1.

8-2-0 in the last 10 with a depleted lineup. I don't really care what the wins look like (.....a fair amount of them have been impressive).

Why do people waste their time and money like that? It's so sad. Get a life.
I want to know why they are constantly shown on TV. I mean yes...it gets people riled up, but by now, the broadcasts/camera people know their schtick. I can't even think it's funny to their friends or family.

More money than brains

Tre and Berube proving that defense and goaltending wins championships. I believe the "numbers" show that the Leafs were dominated 5 vs 5 in the first 2 periods last night. With our D and G under Dubas, this game would have been lost by the time MM and AM turned this game around in the 3rd.

The 2020-2023 versions of this team likely wouldn't have played so poorly 5v5 in the first place and needed the comeback. But it is good to see the team get back to the strong defense they had for years, even though defense and goaltending don't win championships any more than offense.

I still think them on separate lines in the playoffs is the way to go. Marner can drive any line he is on. If they are together, a team can really focus on them and contain them. Then what? JT and Willy really have never worked. They still need to score. A playoff team they will be facing is not a 31st place Nashville on a Wednesday evening in December.

Twice this past few weeks Marner had a turnover at the offensive blueline, backchecked hard and arrived pissed-off. Great to see.
Marner's playing so well, just like he does every year around this time of the season. So hard to reconcile regular season Marner with mid-April Marner, it's like two completely different players.

I look at this team and I think to myself you know what, this team looks really good, I wouldn't even be shocked to see them win the cup. Then I remember how Marner always fades after 3 playoff games and I'm like, OK let's wait and see because if that happens again, well it's just hard to go the distance with an 11 million dollar hole in the lineup.

Goaltending looks to be a strength for a change, D is looking good, they're playing a style of play more suited to the playoffs, everything looks pretty good but to me, Marner is still the big question. If he can somehow keep playing well and producing offence in the playoffs, I like our chances but what the odds are of that happening, I have no idea. Based on past history they're not great but I watch the kid play and he's so good it's ridiculous and I think there has to be a chance he figures it out. Right?

Can't help but be negative, literally everyone knew Marner would be lights out this time of year. He is every year. What he hasn't shown is he is able to be impactful like this anywhere close to when it counts.

Everyone knows how good Marner is as a player. It's why we hate on him so much for his performances in the playoffs

I have no problem with Berube using them together for a period in a game where they are struggling to generate anything.

I hope he keeps Marner with Tavares for an extended stretch. Then when Domi, Pac, and McMann come back it starts to look a lot deeper.

Then like last night, you stack a line for a period to go for it

Knies-Matthews-Marner
Pacioretty-Tavares-Nylander
McMann-Minten-Domi
Dewar-Holmberg-Lorentz

McCabe-Tanev
Rielly-OEL
Benoit-Timmins
Myers

That's your playoff lineup.

Robertson, Kampf, Reaves all moved or waived
so no more trade proposals then? LOL I kid...
We HAVE to upgrade on OEL, he is sinking faster than the Titanic. Absolutely terrible with Rielly.
Don't think so, he's been pretty solid all year. There will be some ups and downs but we are one of the top defensive teams in the league, not sure we should be too concerned if we're healthy.

To me - the biggest difference from this team to last year…

We get down an early goal and we did not deviate at all in our game. Through 3 periods. No gambling, no cheating for offense. Last year, we would have given up on odd man rush and gotten down 2-0 or 3-0 then really getting behind the 8 ball.

Good little regular season line up adjustment by Bérubé, to start the 3rd. Get a couple early 3rd period goals, then shut them down. Woll solid. Great work…

But understand, it was periods 1/2 where this game was won. Not the third.

This type of play and consistent/disciplined approach will be a swing of close to 12-14 points (winning 5-6 games/year) that we would have wilted in last year.

No, start with Marner and Matthews on separate lines. Berube can still use them together when needed, but let it be an option not your go-to #1. I see a one line team right there. Sorry. A playoff team will easily contain that.

He’s playing a little more physical and hopefully that translates to the playoffs and he doesnt get intimidated and pushed out of the series when it tightens up. Having a few more physical players in the lineup will help.

Yeah maybe his wife is knocking him around a bit. He avoided all contact and physical play pre Berube and wife, maybe she called him a sissy or told him she likes it when he plays rough /s. It's a good thing he is now willing to take a face wash to win.

Thank you Marners wife.

Man those two goals against were tough bounces for Woll

Love how steady he’s been.

I’m ok with reuniting Matthews and Marner. JT still looked good from what I saw.

If Willy and JT can’t find chemistry, especially with Domi returns I wonder if Willy with Minten might work

One pass doesn’t mean they work well together
It just was a skilled pass
When Mitch passes to matthews it lands in the sweet spot for a quick release which matthews has the best
Matthews has been more productive on lines without Marner over the past two years. This hardly produced anything together 5v5 until yesterday.

Yesterday he was more physical than ever, imo someone talked to him before Preds game and told him he needs to get involved in the the physical areas more. He started the year more physical, trailed off, and then yesterday he was trying to finish checks and he tackled the player in the crease.

Berube needs to be in the Jack Adams conversation, the way he has this team playing/competing. The adjustment in the 3rd flipped the entire game. I thought we were the better team for most of the game, but putting Knies and Marner back with Matthews, 2 quick goals and a complete momentum change.

Was at the game live last night, it's tough to see behind the play sometimes on TV but Tanev's hockey IQ is through the roof. The guy is always looking all over the ice and repositioning, almost always makes the safe/correct play all over the ice. He really stood out to me last night.

I know we always love to praise Berube and Tre and trash Keefer and Dubas.

The last several years showed that during the regular season the leafs were always one of the top teams and broke team records in points. Now all of a sudden Berube is the coach of the year? Really? Would we say the same thing if the leafs get knocked out in the 1st round again?

Different year and its safe to say that the conference is weaker than years past.

Hey ... I'm liking what Im seeing on the ice but lets not forget that we still have no secondary scoring and our goalies like Woll with another yr of experience and Stolly being a great signing have been the biggest difference IMHO.

Our D has improved. Rielly is still his old self and not very good defensively. Tanev has been a stud and OEL has surprised. But in alot of the close games this year it has been the goalies that saved us.

Long season ahead still ....so lets not start giving out awards yet. :)

Dont worry.....soon enough there will be threads and threads in wanting to get rid of the "core" and neglecting the bottom six with excuses.

Hey @DarkKnight did you post the Game Score Impact card for last night?
I may have missed it and no idea where to find it on my own.

Until the playoffs when they stupidly DISAPPEAR !!!
1st goal was all Matthews.. So what did we learn from that play? Marner can make a play as long as the passing lane is wide open and hes under 0 pressure? He lost the puck twice on that shift, luckily Matthews recovered it and created the play:

Marner has the puck in the corner. Attempts a pass, Preds block it.

The puck bounces back to Marner, he tries a deke and the preds poke it away:

... Matthews chases the puck down and forces the preds to make a bad clear that goes directly to Reilly. Reilly sends it back to Marner whose now alone.

Matthews smartly goes to the front of the net, where the Preds have completely left open and Marner makes a wide open pass to Matthews:
