Just dealing with the fallout left by his predecessor.

I was one of the more vocal critics of the 'Summer of Treliving', but his moves so far have been short-term and pretty calculated. Bertuzzi and Domi were good value buy-low signings. Klingberg was the only one that's really flopped for him so far.

The problem is that we're pretty far in the game and it's pretty apparent that a team can't afford to go for it every single year. You just don't have enough assets to sustain it.

Where they're sitting now, there are just far too many question marks on their roster and the question they're asking themselves is whether or not they're trading a first? The draft this year isn't that deep. That first doesn't hold a lot of value to begin with.
Give me a break with the Dubas fallout. Dubas actually acquired some pieces that made sense and contributed. You conveniently left out the ridiculous Reaves signing which then cost the Leafs Lafferty who would have fit a Leafs need of bottom 6 depth. Plus, Reaves is horrible and will not see the ice in the playoffs. And no- Domi was not a good value signing. He's a defensive black hole that hasn't fit on any of the Leaf lines. That wasn't hard to anticipate. And while Bertuzzi didn't immediately look bad as a signing, he has 21 points in 48 games and has been a major disappointment. Why did they have to acquire a 5.5 M winger to play with Matthews and Marner? The bottom line is the Leafs had over 14 M in cap space last summer and not a single acquisition made them better. Look how smart Vancouver and Florida were with their moves in comparison. Maybe you don't follow Toronto that closely but the signings last summer were questionable and they have all turned out to be disappointing this season. The Leafs will go out meekly in 5 games in the first round this year.

Most Leaf fans aren't going to like this.

On the most recent 32 thoughts podcast Friedman that the Maple Leafs are in fact willing to move their 1st round pick, there had been speculation that Treliving did not want to move the 1st round pick prior to Friedman report.

What he did say was that they didn't want to move their 1st round pick for pure rental, he said that if they are going to trade it they wanted to try and get a couple of players, he brought of Tanev and Zadorov as an example he said that when they were trying to acquire both Tanev and Zadorov their 1st round pick was in play.

He mentioned a package of Tanev and Markstrom as an Example.

He made it sound if Toronto is going to do something It's going to be fairly big.

Speaking of Tanev he also said he didn't think Vancouver could do it.

And brought up a potential Tanev and Hanifin package.

I don't know you do it because you'd have to match salaries, but if there was a way to land both Tanev and Markstrom there isn't much I wouldn't put on the table.

I feel like goaltending is What's holding this team back, I feel like It's cost them close to 15 points.

Samsonov has been AWFUL the majority of the year

Woll looked promising but then he got hurt, he's been hurt for 2 months and by all accounts he's out at least another month

Martin Jones has been solid but he's also Martin Jones.

There has also been rumours of Treliving wanting Risto out of Philadelphia, maybe he tries to get Risto and Seeler, or Risto and Walker.

Or maybe he tries his other former team and targets Dumba and Vejmelka, we know for a fact he tried to sign Dumba in the Summer but Dumba wanted 5 years so they went with Klingberg which started off good and then didn't work at all.

I thought they might keep their 1st this year and I'm good with that if they do.

But it doesn't sound like they will, or at least don't want to and I'm good with that too, as long as the player has term or signs an extension.

If the leafs were going to do something big, they should have done it before the all star break.

Waiting until the trade deadline isn’t what this team needs.

They have so many holes to fill, they need to give any big pieces coming in time to work with the team

New boss completely whiffed on over 13 million of cap space last summer and you stress to give him more time? Wish you were my boss.

having 13 M doesn't mean what you need is available... spend 13 M on orlov, schenn, holl type of player long term would just be stupid.

somethime the best move is just to wait your opportunity...

Nah Detroit kept it going by getting incredibly lucky to have 2 All-Star caliber players gets drafted deep into the later rounds (Datsyuk 171st, Zetterberg 210th in back-to-back years). That is a once-in-a-generation type of luck that no team can expect to replicate. Detroit is a bad example to hold teams to because no franchise will likely get that lucky again in our lifetimes.

Right, so all the leafs have to do is draft two hall of fame caliber players in the 6th or 7th round two years in a row!

Why didn’t Dubas do this?! What an IDIOT!

You didn’t answer the question.

The Leaf’s goaltending is the only thing keeping them from being the best team in the NHL in your opinion?

With the talent they have up front they would be right there, like I said up until about 2 weeks ago Samsonov had an 862 save% if he had done his job all year and been average, not even good just average I have no doubt they'd have at least 5 or 6 more wins.

This team has 8 OT losses how many of those become wins with average goaltending?

There is a few regulation losses that would have been wins with average goaltending.

Yeah they'd be up there.

It's so obviously Tanev for a first to the Leafs. Fits their MO from the last few years to a tee. Acquiring a player everyone thought they should 5+ years late.

LOL- are you saying they weren't better options than Klingberg, Domi, and Reaves?
player who want to accept only 1 year deal except reaves who was just a mistake, it would be hard yes because not everyone are ready for 1 year deal

next season dman like hanifin, pesce, forsling becoming ufa...13M would be more useful there to fix #2 D hole than last season with a Holl schenn or average D who was available at thid moment

when your D suck, your goalie will certsinly have hard time

Even Woll who had been fantastic had only 0.916 sv % and hes played great hockey

get Woll playing the same way he did exemple in Boston, for that stretche thr way he was playing, he would be around 0,940 to 0,950 sv %...

so yes at the end Leafs absolutly need to upgrade his D because right now leafs D is amount 7 or 8 worst D in NHL and they will never win anything with that D whatever whos in net!!!!

I didn’t realize Joseph Woll was 31 year old Hasek…

You're right, I did overlook the Ryan Reaves signing. But at $1.3m, he was a guy who could easily be buried. And it's not like Lafferty was setting the world on fire in Toronto either. At that point they essentially replaced him on the roster with Noah Gregor. IIRC they were also giving Minten some games. You'll have to excuse, I'm not a Leafs fan by any means.

When it comes to the Dubas fallout, yes. A team with an aging top four D core, shallow bottom six depth and a questionable situation in net. The Leafs entered this season with very little left in terms of tradable draft capital over the next few seasons. $18m gets eaten up very quickly when you look at where it needed to be allocated.

Treliving found value on a limited UFA market and minimized his risk by signing short-term contracts because there were a couple fairly important player extensions on the horizon. Getting locked into any pricy long-term mistakes could've prevented them from having the flexibility to improve in the future.

This was a half-measure year where the focus has always been getting Matthews and Nylander signed.

The Leaf’s have very little valuable assets. They better put the 1st on the table or else they ain’t getting anything of quality back.

No Treliving did not find value. Just the opposite. Vancouver and Florida are teams that found value in free agency. Toronto is WORSE than they were last year and their depth is a major reason why.

Toronto's depth took a hit this year because from last year's deadline on they saw Michael Bunting, Alex Kerfoot, Pierre Engvall, Rasmus Sandin, Justin Holl and all of their deadline rentals move on. Plus Brodie and Giordano got older!

Why did they target Bertuzzi and Domi? Because that was the least risky way to fill a couple of those pretty massive voids left by those first two leaving.

What did those other teams do that you expected Toronto's GM to do? Did Florida even do anything significant? How were you going to do anything close to what Vancouver did when all of your salary is tied up in your top five or six players?

are you just serious taking any florida team as exemple??? playing on sunsine with taxes exemption... you can take on the street anyone and ask him to convince a NHL player to play in a florida team and he will be able, come on find a better one...

vancouver get what fron agency?!?!?!a 4,5th dman?

Toronto has way too many holes and flaws that can be fixed at the deadline.
Trading a first for any rental is just a waste.

A hockey trade for someone with term that could be part of the team going forward I’d be open to.

Yes. Ian Cole, Teddy Blueger, and Pius Suter would have all been nice signings for Toronto. The Leafs need depth and defense.

leafs need a #2 and 3... not an ian cole or any player who just write...

and they are beeter to keep the money to get it

when they will upgrade the D they will start to play less defensively and more in the offensive side and that will help scoring depht....

just spend money on depht d causebit was the only thing available to fill the #
1 2 3 leafs need it would be just totally stupid, keep it to try to get someone at TDL or next summer when better D will be available with this money was just smart.

And the sad reality is the Leafs would have been better if they just resigned Bunting, Kerfoot, kept Lafferty, and signed either Cole, Soucy, or even Dumba instead of Klingberg.

Why are the Leafs interested in Tanev then?
