Lilly never showed a thing in his whole nhl career and was clearly outplayed by Timmins. Benning will now have the opportunity to play on the bottom pair, I like that's he a right shot and another heavy player. The draft picks are nice.

Good trade overall.
I wouldn’t say Timmins clearly outplayed Lily.

I would say the coach clearly preferred Timmins to Lily.

And pretty sure you are the first person to reference Benning as a heavy player. Wait until you see him play. Not heavy.

Holy shit. Someone on this board literally mentioned benning earlier today . Sharks is a great team for Liljegren to go to and grow his game

Whats the cap savings on this deal?

1.25AAV and a pending UFA
Lily was 3AAV for 2 years

3-1.25 = 2.75M 1.75 cap gained with this transaction ;);

part of me is a bit sad. I really wanted Lily to work out with us. He might still turn out to be a good D its just the leafs window for contention and Lily's growth to take on the top4 role just did not align. Oh well.....

That's not really true at all. He's always done well in bottom pairing minutes. Hell, he did very well in top 4 minutes as well but very limited sample size due to injuries + depth. I didn't like his game in the playoffs last season especially and he clearly struggled mightly this season where the coach didn't play him. I have no doubt he'll do well on a rebuilding team and would not be surprised if he flourishes like Sandin.

As for Benning... he's not very good at all. He's a bottom pairing defenseman capable of playing low end minutes... so I guess it's better than Myers. I don't think he'll draw in many times.

At least he is gone.

Also 3-1.25=1.75 mil.

I read that Benning was signed for next season too.

Love this trade. Getting a 3rd for Liljegren is far more than anticipated.

Benning was very good for SJ in 22/23. He was brutal last year in 14 games. Hopefully he can return to form. If not you can bury all but 100k of the deal.

Really gotta question why they even signed him to that deal
They could have lost him for nothing? What was the harm and we were always getting something back, despite what the doom patrol was saying. It was an arbitration move, just get it done. Recall talk prior that the team has soured on him.

Good for everyone.

Benning is just a body, probably won't play?

Hakanpaa and Dewar should be ready to return after Thursday (LTIR over), so I would be surprised if the Leafs waive Myers and Benning, or someone else?
