Look, he's not alone on this team. Hopefully they can become a team that is more difficult to play against. I've said forever that until the top heavy forwards are broken up that this team isn't even going to sniff a Cup.

Exactly. I was not a fan of the $3M a year contract. Perhaps he earned it, but I figured he would have been traded, not re-signed.
I hope I'm not wrong about others who I expect should be moved, or simply not signed...

May as well trade Topi Niemela too as he won't be given a shot by Berube. Hopefully he has an AHL all-star worthy season and we can recoup a 2nd or something for him before he decides to pack his bags and go back to Finland

Sharks fan here. He got injured last year and it seemed as though he was still knocking the rust off with us. Had been sat recently for Jack Thompson, a young RHD that we called up, but then got back in the lineup the past few games. He was our bottom pairing RHD and we have the worst defense in the league, so I wouldn't have much of an expectation from him. Sounds like just a straight cap dump and you needed a RHD in return for the deal (not unlike the Ceci deal we did with Edmonton in the offseason).
Curious about why you're all down on him. I know Toronto is not known for having good defenders in general, but what are his struggles and are there things that he does well? I wouldn't expect we'd be getting a player without issues back given how little we gave up.

We had others we could trade for cap relief. At worse he should have dressed for more games at attempted to increase his trade valuem under 200 nhl games and a right shot D man.
It’s a solid move for San Jose to pick him up now, especially after the Leafs put in the effort to develop him. He could really hit his peak around 26-27, like many defensemen do. Or he could be a total flop.
I wonder if they discussed Granlund at all in a potential future deal.

Dressing him for more games would have only decreased his trade value. He just isn’t good.

from what i recall
then i think 2020 was an absolutely BUST draft; and 2021 and 2023 we just didnt have enough picks thanks again to dubas paying extra for other teams to eat 50% of the cap at TDL because Leafs just didn't have enough cap space

This is critical for this franchise and has been for years of overpaying non-Cup winning forwards.
If I am the GM, I am cutting loose many millions in this offseason. I hope fans understand that the value of an $11-12M forward who doesn't help the team to a long playoff run is not nearly equal to two $5-6M Gamers who do.
I wanted Petrioangelo rather than re-signing Rielly, and he won a Cup.
I hoped Leafs could get Bennett (apparently Dubas tried) and he won a Cup.
It's time for the Leafs to find these players when they are out of favour, and/or are UFAs. In Petros case, the Leafs wouldn't have lost an asset outside of Rielly as he was an UFA.
GMs have to make difficult decisions at time but they really aren't difficult if your objective it to win Cups not the popularity contest of teammates.
To get Benning, a 3rd and a 6th.

Lily has no standout skills he's just kind of okay at everything except hard physical play, which he's terrible at. Every postseason he would inevitably be scratched after failing to box out guys at some point. He was never going to be a fit for this coach/GM. Other than that he's pretty well rounded without a ton of weaknesses or strengths. I think it's a shrewd move for a rebuilding team playing for low stakes in the foreseeable future.

Dont be surprised if he plays 20 games and gets benched. He is a good backward skater, good one timer that never got used. He has trouble reading the game, thats his biggest issue.

How do we know didn’t try to move him at the draft too? There was plenty of talk prior that the Leafs had soured on him, maybe there wasn’t much interest at the time?

2020 was Amirov, and then a bunch of guys who might play in the bottom of the lineup and still Niemela and AA have potential to be impact players.
2021 will likely be better than all Lou's drafts combined (ignoring top 10 picks, since that is not fair).
2023 who knows... it's far too early but Cowan and Chadwick look good.
I don't even think this is a reflection of Dubas doing well, but our drafting before him was SO bad, best pick by Lou outside of the first is likely Grundstrom.
