Non factor in playoffs when we need him, that's a 2 year extension. Dubas is starting to lose me..just falls in love with players and can't let go even if it doesn't work.

I think it's much more than that. Dubas will perpetually be against the Cap. He simply can't get the game changers he needs unless he can find savings down the line. It's about finding value with a player he now is familiar with.

Players like Spezza and Simmonds who made their money in better times are willing to sign slightly less because the lost revenue, especially after taxes; isn't that significant at this point. They'd rather stay on a team they believe in, a city they enjoy. Everyone knows the Leafs Cap situation. Simmonds, Spezza and others certainly do.

Simmonds at 900k isn't going to make or break your lineup. It's all upside if he can play his effective game. He isn't a first line player, he's a depth guy who when he's healthy can have an impact and lead with his voice. When he was standing in front of the net on the PP and played with conviction, he was more than adequate.

Just look at Spezza last year, he was one of the best bargains in the NHL on a point per dollar basis. If Simmonds plays the way he did pre-injury, it's the type of astute signing all GM's want. In the case of Dubas, it's what he needs as his options to ice a Cup challenging team are more limited due to the money tied up in the "core".

I am having trouble understanding why some people are objecting to this signing. This contract can be buried with the Marlies for no cost to our cap space if he is does not work out. How many proven veterans that still bring an element of toughness (an element sorely lacking) are available for that price? If people are worried that the coach will misuse him, then fire the coach. If it so happens he turns out to be "useless" send him down to the Marlies to help Clune.

Exactly. Soft ass mentality. We can bring in Tom Wilson and Im sure he gonna somehow turn soft in our System.

Someone like Bruce Boudreau would really bring out the Nastiness of this team

As the old saying goes ... " You Cant make Chicken Salad out of Chicken S..T"

I guess. He was completely vacant in the playoffs. Hopefully it was because of the injury and not being back up to speed otherwise this makes zero sense. I'm also still questioning if it's a coaching/management policy to avoid contact to stay out of the box (which is the only explanation I can come up with over how soft Simmonds/Thornton/Foligno were against Montreal) which would, again, make this move seem nonsensical.
Foligno had a bad back so can't really go by his playoffs - although it makes me wonder if he was hurt before he got here .. Jumbo was skating at junior pace at best and had no ability to get to hits - he should have taken decision away from Keefer and told him to sit him down - i lost respect fro Jumbo as i thought he was better than that .. Wayner on 4th line I think renders him useless - he has lost a step for sure and he needs a little more time to get to hits .. but all 3 were a giant waste in playoffs .. we can only hope that pre injury Wayner can return next year

No way. Keefe isn't a fool, he loves when his players are physical. He stated publicly that he wanted his team to play more physical against the Habs.

If I could pull back the curtain, I would guess that Foligno and Simmonds were not 100%, coupled with a more physical Habs team made it difficult to play that game. Simmonds isn't a big, beefy guy. He has to rely on courage and the will to win which he has always had. He can't do it alone. Leafs need more size and compete.

He definitely had more to give in the playoffs and the question is "why didn't he"? I have to think it was related to his injury. Which is somewhat concerning going forward. He needs to come back strong and healthy to be effective. He was an excellent player before his injury. The Leafs would take that player any day. He played with energy and fearlessness which translated into a hell of a run at one point when he was a staple in front of the net. That was the player the Leafs lost when JVR moved on. Simmonds can play that role.

Dubas is going to have to find big, strong players to play a more physical brand. We saw who was in the Final Four, the game hasn't changed the way it was supposed to, the league still "put the whistle away". Simmonds can be our Josh Anderson. Not the biggest guy, but mentally tough enough and big enough to throw his weight and play a hard north/south game.

Good cap hit and not too long of a term...hopefully he'll make a bigger impact like before his injury.

Seriously. Last offseason, Simmonds was my favorite addition, but he's a shell of his former self. He brings very little intensity most times, doesn't finish hits just like the rest of this awful roster, and coasts around out there with very weak skating.

For me this signals that Dubas is still totally out of touch with how to build a winner and isn't interested in making necessary changes to bring in players with extremely high, consistent compete level

And yet he did very little of that for most of the year
No, people want some kind of identity. Not just plugging holes with cheap vets
Exactly. The experiment with vets failed miserably and he brought very little of that. Why? Because of a wrist injury? Sure, fighting would be down with a bad wrist, but finishing hits and constant lackadaisical and poor skating from a wrist injury? Nah, doesn't jibe with me.

So, save Bogo and Spezza, the experiment failed - what's next, re-sign Thornton too?

Ideally he gets waived and is effectively a taxi squad 13th forward who rotates in once in a while. I don't think he should be a regular, or at least should have to compete with Joey Anderson for whatever job he would have received.

Anderson is not as "tough" in the traditional sense but he is faster (although mostly because Simmonds is not fast at all), better defensively, and almost certainly has more offensive upside while still getting into those dirty areas and hitting guys.

Was he though? Or was it more that he showed a little snarl that we haven't seen much of lately?

I think at one point he had five goals in a seven or eight game stretch. Most of them on the PP when he was on the front doorstep and playing even more of the type of game I expected him to play.

He isn't going to give you 30 goals a year, he can be a nuisance though and drive corners a little harder than most. The snarl you refer to is the part of the game the Leafs need more of especially his team-first attitude.

When he found his groove he was having an impact on this teams identity. Dubas has to find more in his mold with more size. It's why I broke from my norm and stated I would have liked to have seen Clifford stay. You want a pack of wolves out there for the playoffs, not a lone-wolf. Do so without sacrificing from your talent.

These aren't the guys who are going to break a game open for you on command, but, they can bring some weight and stifle the opposition. I love a speedy, talent-laden team, but the playoffs simply don't allow for this no matter how much we hope it will change.

'One of the hardest losses of my life': Simmonds reflects on collapse to Habs

Wayne Simmonds reflects on the Maple Leafs' first round collapse to the Canadiens and says it was one of the hardest losses he's had to deal with in his life. He says it left a bitter taste in everyone's mouth and he's happy to be back so they can prove their naysayers wrong.

Thanks for posting this .. so Wayner said he had to adjust his game post wrist injury and he was never quite back afterwards .. it is what I thought but now it is clear .. he is a TO guy now and he his wrist will get stronger over summer break .. we need guys like Wayner a man of men

Montreal and Tampa are both teams packed full on sandpaper. Simmonds did look like a fit pre-injury and he has taken a pay reduction. He fits in as team heavyweight with the potential to recover and provide a Spezza like impact. Ideally, he fights 2-3 times more a season given his offensive output is declining to earn his keep as a regular. If the Leafs have roster room under the cap he could start as the 13th forward.

It is good to remember that the Leafs were division champs for the first time in a long time this season and they lost to a team that went on to the finals in game 7 without JT for the entire series. It wouldn't have hurt to try someone new here, but these guys had a pretty successful season as a team. It makes sense to bring some back.

A player for 900K is hard to call a “bad signing” tbh. I know we are all pissed at the team, and rightfully so, but this is a average signing. It’s nothing to call home about.

This is a dollar amount that pre-injury Simmonds can outplay and provide value.

If he plays like he did post-injury, then he should be the 13th forward and 900K is a fine salary for that, or at worst, off the roster completely and the contract doesn’t matter except for MLSE’s spreadsheets

Leafs sign Jumbo to a 2 years 900k contract. Good or bad...go.... ;)

If you are not helping the team, you are hurting the team. Does he PK, does he PP? Does he suppress the other team 5on5 like Nash?

Bad signing.

Not that your point is invalid but if you fart near a player on the Island it's counted as a hit.

Just started Keto and for frig sakes ... you wouldn't want me on that island, it would do more then register as a hit...

2 years? another masterful negotiation by Kid Kyle.
Yup, with you, one would think think your words are sacastic, but obviously not with this deal. Though the negotiation was with Pridum. It was a masterful negotiation.
