They didn't have. the roster to be competitive in the playoffs. when every team tightens up. Nor did they have the coaching... Dubus recycled. the depth on this roster many times and he just couldn't figure out how to build a playoff team.
And when Washington and the blues and for that matter the pens were losing in the first or second round year after year they also didn’t have the right make up and their stars didn’t have “it” until they did.
Matty Tkachuck everyone favourite playoff warrior was an absolute liability in every post season he played beforehand.

That wouldn’t be good his salary would still count against the cap
If Gio retired, his salary would still count against the cap because it's a 35+ contract.

It doesn't matter if he quits, retired or gets sent to the minors. 35+ and it's on your books until it expires.

The rules are so tough on that that I sometimes wonder if the player died would his contract still count against the cap?

He's a point shot threat, so if the Leafs ever went with a 3F 2D stance on the PP, they have a second shot option from the point without wasting Matthews from distance.

They did change the rules a bit on 35+ contracts and while I think I have the basics of it I’m not confident enough to speak on it in detail.
But basically as long as there is no signing bonuses and the salary doesn’t change year over year not all the 35+ conditions apply

I don’t see why not. He’s really good at moving the puck.

It certainly appears that way.

If we trade Liljegren because we signed Klingberg that will be very disappointing

I don't see much of a point in trading Liljegren when he makes so little money.

Did you not watch the playoffs. Rielly was the best D man on either team by a long way.

Rielly is really bad on the powerplay. He can gain the zone but almost never shoots so he is completely predictable, and when he does shoot it is a complete muffin.

That said, this is another one of those high-risk possibly high-reward deals the Leafs have been forced into by their incredibly bad cap management the past few years. Reclamation projects hoooo!

Who on Anaheim played well? That team was the worst NHL team I’ve ever seen.
Zegras and Terry lol.
You’re not wrong, their team was horrendous. My brother is huge Ducks fan and I watched about 10 games, Klingberg looked worse than Shattenkirk every time which is not a cause for optimism for me haha

Still I’ll give him a fair chance of course and root him on, but I can’t pretend that I’m happy about it

If Treliving can sign Domi and Lemieux...
I think the Leafs would have what would be closer to a playoff team... trade Brodie, sign Mayfield if possible... definitely need a few more key moves still...

You mean those last few years where the cap has climbed a whopping 2m in 4 years? its as if we don't even bother trying to be objective in our observations these days.
