I’m as frustrated as anyone else here, but I’d like to play devils advocate if I may.

Looking at his career regular season totals compared to playoff totals is hard in his case as he only has one playoff series for comparison but I’ve included them for context.

Regular season
338 games 94 goals (22.8 goal pace) 221 points (53.3 point pace)

Playoffs
7 games 5 goals (58.7 goal pace) 10 points (117.4 point pace)

Considering the sample size, pretty unusable. If you include his AHL numbers, you find the following.

Regular season
478 games 126 goals ( 21.6 goal pace) 302 points (51.8 point pace)

Playoffs
49 games 28 goals (46.8 goal pace) 49 points (82 point pace)

I can already hear people yelling at their keyboard that you can’t use AHL stats compared to NHL. It’s not what I’m doing here. I’m comparing his playoff performance to his regular season.

You’ll notice that he’s consistently a much better post season player.

I know that he’s hot garbage right now, but as a fan I really hope that he can continue this trend and turn it around in the playoffs.

Edit: He actually won the Jack A. Butterfield Trophy in 2016/17, which is the MVP of the AHL playoffs

Too much into it or not enough?

The amount of money he can possibly make on his next contract is what he's tunnel vision'd on. I sincerely doubt any nonsense like that would be getting in his way of that.

The likely scenario is that he's going to eventually get going and start producing better.
If you’re not enjoying yourself, fitting in and on the outside of the cool kids, I could see how it would effect performance

Reminder. This guy missed time due to hand injuries 🙄. Maybe hands not back t 100%. Or he plays better if he can catch the puck often

So many painful hot takes in this thread. 90% of this board hated this guy three weeks ago when he rolled his eyes on the bench, and now he's a critical contributor on one of the best lines in the league. Who could have imagined that?

Bertuzzi last 4 games: 5 points, 17 shots, 9 hits.

5v5 after 16 games: 56% CF, 62% xGF, 62% SCF and 63% HDCF...most of this while underachieving.

All signs point to a more steady flow of points for Bertuzzi now that he seems to be fully healthy and settled in.

That must piss a lot of people off  Going to run out of things to cry about.

Bertuzzi is starting to look more engaged but also his linemate Nylander is playing like the best forward in the NHL.
It is both true Nylander is playing like one best forward in the league and Bertuzzi is finally playing well.

We don't win tonight if you take either one out of the lineup.

Don't evaluate the final result until the final result is in.

Most consistent players so far have been Rielly, Tavares and Nylander.

However, we're only talking about 16 games.

We're not even in December yet.

It would be nice if Bertuzzi-Tavares-Nylander can be a season long effective line.

Bertuzzi doesn't have to carry anything, he just has to fit in and play his game.

No point in his last 5 games, 9 points in 24 GP so far, so about 30 points over 82 pace.

Looks to be consistently playing in the top 6. What is the story here? Does he bring grit at least?

I thought he would explode offensively alongside guys like Matthews, Nylander, Tavares, Marner and co. Does not seem to be happening?

Will they extend him for cheap or is he gone after the year?

1. Meh
2. I wouldn't

I feel you could put Jarkronk in that spot, and you wouldn't lose anything and be $3m better off cap-wise.

I think a lot of that is up to him. He’s playing well but without the points production he’s not going to earn a multi-year contract at $5-6 million like he thought he would’ve this past summer. If he continues his good play and performs well in the playoffs I’d be down to retain him for $4~ million or so. Could end up being a steal if he bounces back offensively in the years to come.

If he’s soured on Toronto and isn’t into all the coverage he may just piss off to a smaller market for the same money. We’ll see.

He’s the type of trial-piece who will be defined by his playoffs performance/value.
Problem is Leafs paying him millions for 82 regular season games and the paying fans expect some production during regular season too.

How long has it been without Willy on that line?

I personally think he would do better on the 3rd line.

Bert played on the 3rd line for Boston last yr.

Could it be as simple as clashes of political stances? Bertuzzi was obviously anti vac which usually says further to the right and the core possibly leaning to the left - going by certain causes they have stood behind.

Am I thinking too much into this?

The hockey team isn’t Twitter, no one other than the terminally online give a shit about peoples political leanings.

Twitter isn’t a real place and what happens there isn’t peoples real lives.

Yeah we do need Bertuzzi to come alive offensively, but he's been a noticeable motor out there so you can accept the work in progress.
Agreed. He's been ridiculously snakebit tbh, eventually those pucks will start going in and I anticipate a strong second half leading into playoffs .

Just did some digging into his numbers a bit to confirm what I already thought was the case, but he actually leads the team the in CF% and xGF%. His xGF% is above 60% which is pretty insane. Unfortunately he's just not converting right now, his 5v5 on-ice sh% is about 7% (meaning the team converts on 7% of chances when Bert is on the ice), the Leafs historically have been between 9-10% as a team through the Matthews era. JT is in a similar situation. Expect a strong finish to the season for these two, and hopefully carried over into the playoffs.
